Is there something special about the particular spot the person gets on the list?

I like when people share how they know something; it's funny when I find out something completely "regular" in my youth is obscure to my friends. I think Fawlty Towers aired on PBS in America, like a lot of the BBC shows. Lear's had a half-dozen shows aired on NBC, CBS, Nickelodeon (Nick at Nite), maybe other stations. It's really not a matter of knowing his face, but people have seen his shows. While MacGowan's music is known in the US, I'm pretty sure most Americans remember him because of his teeth. There is a pathological obsession with teeth here and he's a trigger.

The season never ends!

Chrissie was the first female tennis player for me too. I think it's because all of the Australian schedules and interviews are ramping up, so if this happened in February, maybe she wouldn't have mentioned it. However, she also does advocacy on the issue.

Chris Evert's ovarian cancer returns; she's in chemotherapy and missing Aussie Open. https://www.tennis.com/news/articles/chris-evert-begins-chemotherapy-after-ovarian-cancer-returns-will-miss-australian-open-health

Those are possibly just one hit wonders? I am not sure of their careers otherwise. I don't have a special loathing for one hit wonders; it's not unethical to only be able to write/record one good song. SPIN awarding Imbruglia gave industry payola vibes rather than naively thinking an artist would have longevity. They know they took a bribe to put her on, and publicly took an L for it.
-
I like Torn fine, but it's a huge music industry joke to praise her over anyone else. When that song was released, the magazine SPIN put Natalie Imbruglia on the cover lauding her as the next big pop star. It was considered such a snafu that they wound up mocking themselves for years with the annual Natalie Imbruglia award.

7/15 I knew the Friends one having seen every episode since its debut: I was 9 years old; the other answers would have put me at 3, 5, or 7 which is improbable. The nightly news covered it being picketed by the Evangelicals. It was a huge thing in school whether you were allowed to watch or not. and I knew Tina Turner's name.

First diagnosis of breast cancer in 2015. Remission in 2017. Lost her house in the Malibu fires in 2018, had to sue State Farm insurance for not paying out (and won). Lost her health insurance due to not acting. Announced in 2020 that the cancer returned in 2019. Spread to brain this January. Divorce announced in April. Spread to bones last month.

It's the fact that a lot of Americans don't know that Puerto Rico is part of America that is the worst.

When I saw he died, I immediately thought of this scene in Good Times (the character was reacting to her own husband's death):
