Vera Koroleva (born September 30, 1914)

That makes me wonder how much Russian born before the 1917 Revolution are still alive ? About ten ?  More ? Less ?

  2. Since of Gerd Muller two and half years ago, we’ve lost several former or current top goalscorers of national teams :

Gerd Muller (record beaten by Klose)

Pelé (record beaten after his death by Neymar)

Just Fontaine (record beaten in 1984 by Platini and then by 7 other players)

Bobby Charlton (record beaten by Rooney in 2015 and Kane in 2022)

Gigi Riva (still top goalscorer of Italy)

French politician Jean Turco is still alive at 106

To be honest he’s not famous. I’m French and I had never heard of him before your post.

  4. So it has been 13 years and 15 days (since 2010) between the deaths of Enzo Bearzot and Zagallo, the longest gap between World Cup Winning Managers deaths.
The previous "record" was 12 years 5 months and 19 days between Juan Lopez Fontana and Helmut Schon deaths (1983-1996)

On the opposite, Zagallo and Beckenbauer died only 2 days apart, the shortest gap between World Cup Winning Managers deaths.

The previous record was 9 months and 4 days between the deaths of Aymoré Moreira and Alf Ramsey (1998-1999).

  5. Zagallo and Beckenbauer were the first two people to be World Champions as a player AND a coach.

The third and last one is Deschamps. I’d be him I would go for a medical check up !

    Zagallo died

With his death, Swedish Kurt Hamrin is the last living 1958 finalist, and Brazilian Amarildo and Czech Josef Jelinek are the last living 1962 finalists.

Brazil 1958 Squad is now down to 4 players :

    Jose Altafini "Mazzola"

    Dino Sani

    Moacir

    Pepe

Only the first two, Altafini and Dino Sani, actually played games, the two others being unused substitutes.

Zagallo was the longest lived WC winning manager.

He was the last 1970 and 1974 surviving manager.

He was the earliest surviving WC winning manager, outliving 2 of his successors, Helmut Schon and Enzo Bearzot.

Now the earliest surviving WC winning manager is Cesar Luis Menotti.

  7. Cross posting about Rosie Reyes (@The Old Crem talked about her in the Tennis players thread).

She also was Olympic Champion,  in the Exhibition Women’s double at the 1968 Games on home soil. She also won silver in the Demonstration Women’s double.

But more remarkably, in the same Games, she won a bronze medal in the Exhibition Mixed Doubles with her husband, French Pierre Darmon.

I don’t think it is that common that a husband and wife win a medal competing together.
I don’t see another example, apart from Swiss couple Hermann de Pourtalès and Hélène de Pourtalès who won gold and silver medals in sailing at the 1900 Games. Hélène was the first ever woman to win a gold medal.

I really hate when Monarchs resign due to old age. Like, you signed up for the job for life, there's no retiring, otherwise its just a glorified presidency.
There should be a global law assigning every Monarch who wants to resign for a ritual execution to make him do so in that way.

Well maybe they think a youngest monarch will better serve his country than a old geezer.

There are quite a few other female presidents. .

Really who ? Well to be honest, I didn’t check the Oceanic countries or the Caribbean. And I’m pretty sure there is no African or Asian female head of states.

You’re right, I forgot the Ethiopian  and Tanzaninan president.
