Florrie Baldwin Europe, and Britain's oldest person has died aged 114. Feel free to resurrect the topic of whether Guadeloupe resident Eugenie Blanchard qualifies as European. Florrie was the "oldest living person in Europe". Italian Venere Pizzinato (born 23 November 1896) now takes on that mantle.

Lena Horne The singer and actress has died aged 92. She was one of Hollywood's first black leading ladies. She suffered during the McCarthy era and was a leading light in the Civil Rights movement along with her friend Paul Robeson. Another one on my shorltlist for this year's DDP who didn't make it to the final 20!

Andor Lilienthal Another chess grandmaster has made his final move at the age of 99. The Moscow-born Hungarian won matches against six world champions during his career. He is the the last surviving member of 27 original grandmaster chess players following Vasily Smyslov's death in March.

Peter Heathfield The former general secretary of the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has died aged 81. "He was a member of the NUM's so-called troika, along with its president Arthur Scargill and vice-president Mick McGahey". A major figure in the miner's strike, his then wife Betty led the miners' wives campaign.

Peter Steele The frontman of the New York gothic / doom / thrash metal band "Type O Negative" has died of heart failure aged 48. I've never heard of them personally, but his death seems to be creating quite a bit of news. Apparently he was reported to have died once before in 2005. Their last album was ironically entitled "Dead Again"!

Arthur Mercante The boxing referee has counted himself out at the age of 90. He oversaw many notable fights, not least Frazier's defeat of Ali at Madison Square Garden in 1971, dubbed "The Fight of the Century". Way back in 1959 he reffed the world title fight between Floyd Patterson and Ingemar Johansson, and his final big fight (Bernard Hopkins vs Felix Trinidad) came just 2 weeks after 9/11 when he was aged 81.

Kenneth McKellar The Scottish Tenor has died at the age of 82 in California. He was only diagnosed with pancreatic cancer last week.
