Those gun-happy Americans are at it again!: "Shooter kills himself after hurting friend": http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/arti.../706260409/1196 The article goes on to state that his friend was a little more than just "hurt" seeing as he subsequently died.

"Charles W. Lindberg, one of the U.S. Marines who raised the first American flag over Iwo Jima during World War II, has died. He was 86": http://www.chron.com/disp/story.mpl/ap/nation/4917809.html "Lindberg spent decades explaining that it was his patrol, not the one captured in the famous Associated Press photograph by Joe Rosenthal, that raised the first flag as U.S. forces fought to take the Japanese island."

May have been mentioned before, but: Parents who give their children ridiculous names: http://www.sptimes.com/2007/06/22/Worldand...says_a_nu.shtml Are they 4real?!!! Why don't they just call the poor sod "Albert". They could always register him here on the DL if they want to give him a daft name!

It occurs to me looking back at this thread that Millwall's very pertinent query has gone unanswered. My research reveals that Bonce "is a community in the district of Prilep, in the Republic of Macedonia" (thank you Wikipedia!), so I reckon it's nowt to do with that. However, here is a link which may be more relevant: http://www.worldwidewords.org/qa/qa-bon2.htm I concur with the article, as my father definitely used "bonce" as a word for head. Still doesn't explain why it might be used in rhyming slang, which is confirmed here: http://www.probertencyclopaedia.com/Z_BACON_BONCE.HTM Here is another reference: http://community.livejournal.com/cheap_as_chips "The word bonce is slang for head, mainly used in London. It appears to have derived from the game 'Bonce' - a children's game played with large glass marbles. I can remember my Dad, a Cockney by the truest definition, calling my sister and I bacon bonce when, as children, we did something particularly stupid. I have grown up believing that a bacon bonce is therefore a stupid person. Not so! Bacon Bonce is Cockney Rhyming Slang for nonce meaning 'child molester'! I'll have to put Dad right ..." I suspect, as with much Cockney Rhyming Slang, the derivation of the expression is either purely random or lost in the mists of time. Unless anyone wants to contact that sexy Ms. Coren on "Balderdash and Piffle" - they could do a whole episode on "words and expressions used to describe the dregs of society"

Scarborough FC: http://www.yorkshirepost.co.uk/sport?articleid=2968819 I'm sure someone will reference this in the footy thread (if they haven't done so already - can't be arsed checking), but as they were only recently a member of the football league proper, I think it is worth noting here.

Ed Friendly, "veteran TV executive, co-creator of the 1960s comic sensation Rowan & Martin's Laugh-In and producer of the frontier family drama Little House on the Prairie" has died: http://www.thestar.com/entertainment/article/227309 You might say the two examples of his output above represent a pretty broad church!

Maurice Marsac, French character actor who appears to have been something of a movie industry "rent-a-Frenchman" has died aged 92, 3 weeks after that of his wife of 55 years: http://www.latimes.com/news/printedition/c...1&cset=true Also a nationally ranked croquet player, and member of the French Resistance in WWII. I was always totally crap at art at school, so gave it up. When I started in computing, I thought "hey, maybe computers will make it possible for a numpty like me to design great art!". No such luck! I would play around with fancy colours and typefaces for hours, and the result would still come out looking like a sack of shite - basically like the London 2012 Olympics Logo. Maybe I designed it when I was pissed and don't remember. Where's my money, Mr. Coe?

Tony Thompson (just thought I'd stick his name here so that search will find it and we don't get duplicates). The NME have their facts incorrect in the link given. According to the Guinness Book of British Hit Singles, "I Like the Way (The Kissing Game)" only made it to No.43 in the UK charts. It did reach No.1 in the US though. Their only other UK hit was "She's Playing Hard to Get" (No.55 in 1992). By the way, what do we think of the NME's cover photo of Beth Ditto in the link?

So he's bald and got a white beard. He is 81 after all! I started going bald at 27! Considering his earlier health scare, I'd concur with others and say he looks pretty healthy to me!

Erica Wills (a.k.a. Deborah Wills / Deborah Willis / Deborah Thornton-Jackson), the original "Martini Girl", died of a stroke on 18th May aged 57: From "The Independent" http://news.independent.co.uk/uk/this_brit...icle2600250.ece and from "The Glasgow Daily Record" ("FROM MARTINI GIRL TO BEING SOLD AS A SEX SLAVE"): http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/news/tm_...-name_page.html The 2 articles cover similar ground, but the John Lennon / Yoko Ono story is amusing - I note the latter publication uses "F**koff!" whereas the former doesn't!

The link shows a pic of 3 presenters with the caption "Bastable said he was still being recognised 30 years later", but does not indicate which one he is. Is this some sort of test? I reckon the one in the middle must be Susan Stranks, so the other must be "former BBC Radio 1 DJ Pete Brady". From memory, I'm guessing Tony is the trendy-looking guy on the right... BTW, it would appear a group called "The Dentists" put out a track called "Tony Bastable v John Noakes" on their 1985 album "Some People are on the Pitch They Think It's All Over It is Now"

Chinese doctor dies after eating blowfish: http://www.radioaustralia.net.au/news/stories/s1936861.htm He obviously hadn't seen that episode of "The Simpsons" where Homer eats the blowfish. There's a certain irony in this news item: 1. Doctor catches blowfish 2. Doctor eats some of blowfish and gives some to another crew member 3. Crew member becomes ill 4. Crew member visits doctor 5. Doctor dies It doesn't state what happened to the crew member. With the doctor being Chinese and the crew member Japanese, could this be some evil plot by the doctor that backfired?

South African Percy Sonn, head of the ICC (International Cricket Council) has died aged 57 following complications after minor surgery. "He returned to the Caribbean to present Australia with their trophy but his health deteriorated on his return to his homeland" (OK, so it's in the I & P thread, but thought I'd better list it here where it belongs also)
