Just finished reading Philip Roth's "The Plot Against America" (The Portnoy's Complaint chap. You know). An excellent ripping bit of alternative history, couldn't put it down and all that. Everyone should read it. Apart from Banshees Scream of course, who wouldn't understand it.

That's the stupidest thing I've heard for a long time. Any half-way competent parent will tell you to let children solve their own disputes. Governments as our trusted (let's leave democracy out of this) elected representatives should show the same wisdom. Read "Nobody hurt in Small Earthquake", the second part of Michael Green's autobiography recently. That's the chap who wrote "The Art of Coarse Rugby". Most of his stuff is out of print now, but well worth reading if you can get hold of it. I wonder if he's still alive?

I tend to associate him with the phrase "yus my dear", Not sure why.

I have just finished reading Roger Lewis' Charles Hawtrey- The man who was Private Widdle. An unusually written book with an incredible number of footnotes. Mostly abusing Peter Rogers or Kenneth Connor. It is also the only book I have read which lists the names of some people (BBC executives who denied Hawtrey work) and exhorts the reader, should he know of their or their descendants' whereabouts, to go round to their houses and put fireworks through the letterbox. I wouldn't be surprised to hear there is a law against that sort of thing.

Indeed the Caribbean can be quite delightful at this time of year. Germany on the other hand is hardly a destination I would recommend to you.
