Mrs Cerberus occasionally peruses this forum from over my shoulder. Her favourite avatar, and, I think probably mine too, is Teddy's. Anyone know where he's got to?

Jo Stafford, 87, was the first female vocalist to have a Number One single in the UK chart. Her rendition of "You Belong To Me" followed the inauguaral chart-topper, "Here in my Heart" by Al Martino (another one to watch out for?) in January 1953. A contemporary of Vera Lynn who has no doubt been mentioned on here before.

Things to do while waiting for Death ... 2005
Cerberus replied to The Yeti's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Yes, I suppose so. BTW Yeti, or anyone who knows, why is there apparently nobody who joined the Forum before 2003, if the Deathlist itself started in 1987? Have all the founding fathers moved on? -
I can't argue with that. he's a sitting duck.

Things to do while waiting for Death ... 2005
Cerberus replied to The Yeti's topic in DeathList extra-curricular
Yes it's a bit late in the day to comment, but I have a problem with the title of this thread. I would fervently hope that none of us is "waiting for death" (or even Death). In view of the concept behind this site, surely it should be "waiting for a death." A small but important difference. Preferably someone on the List, but times are hard it seems. -
And of course it gives you a chance to use a lot of long words which no-one else knows. Do you do a lot of crosswords?

Really? Are terrorist groups targeting ageing celebrities? And I should have thought that the rich and famous have more protection against deadly viruses (viri?) than the rest of us. But it is a slow year, isn't it. I'm getting fed up with seeing Sister Lucia's picture every time I pay my (twice-daily) visit. I want to go away for a while, until I've heard that someone on the list has actually croaked, but I can't! I'm hooked!

I heard on a radio feature this morning that Edwyn is making a good recovery, but there's nothing about it (or his illness, for that matter) on his website.

Well that was weird. Wouldn't let me post the message until I put the asterisk in. Kept getting some daft message that I wasn't authorised to view this page, or something. Oh well.

I still like his music. "Off The Wall", "Thriller", "Bad", they're all good albums. After that the quality dips a little, but you get the odd good song. And some of the Jackson 5 stuff is quite fun. But I imagine there'll be a radio blackout if he goes down. After all, you never hear Jonathan King or Gary Glitter on the airwaves now, do you? Boudicca, welcome from me (I think I frightened Yvonne away). Bit of a P*thon fan myself. In a previous incarnation on this forum I was "Pining For The Fjords", but I've changed my e-mail address since, and forgotten all my old passwords, so I can't use it as a kind of alter ego. Never mind, plenty of fun to be had on here regardless.

Not everyone will remember him, but Sir Robert Mark, Commissioner of the Met Police 1972-77, was 88 on Monday. He'll certainly get a full-page obit in the 'proper' newspapers when his time comes. Last seen advertising tyres if I remember, setting the tone for John Stalker years later. "Come on Drummer, you've made your point!"

Audrey, Lady Callaghan of Cardiff died yesterday aged 89. The Callaghans were married for 66 years. I seem to recall their daughter married Peter Jay the British ambassador to the USA.

one dead Gerry Adams & Martin McGuinness

Has anyone thought of just asking the people of Northern Ireland what they want? To remain part of the UK or become part of the Republic of Ireland? It couldn't be that difficult to organise a referendum, could it? Though I admit it could leave us with the worst case scenario of a 51%/49% vote, in which both sides would claim victory. I'm sure this approach has been considered before, I just wondered what the arguments were for not trying it. -
I think you'll find that that versatile little word, "crap", is a noun, a verb and an adjective. Not sure it makes sense in that context though.

Is Biggs the last surviving member of the gang? I know Bruce Reynolds and Buster Edwards died, but I can't remember how many others there were (it's a long time since I've seen the film).

Big Bird from 'Sesame Street' and Rod Hull's emu will be first in line. (If I have anything to do with it)

Supporters of what exactly? I know I shouldn't rise to the bait, but if you dislike this site so much, why not just, you know, go somewhere else? Other websites are available, I believe.

She should never have taken that job on the Lusitania though.

I don't think it's that they're not worthy, but there aren't many famous real-life animals are there? Except for the odd race-horse and famous pet. Desert Orchid Bubbles the chimp Bill Clinton's cat, Socks Anyone think of any more? Anyway Yvonne, where have you been? Three posts in four months. Come on here more often if you want middle-aged men flirting with you, offering you an avatar (and other "services") and generally making fools of themselves. Only kidding.

Don't know why I suddenly reverted to "Guest" there - I'm trying to do this on a crappy TV internet thing as daughter is monopolising the computer as usual.
-
Yeah, he still had another 13 years to do. Of course, it's possible that they couldn't bear to be parted from the old man, but my guess is that the pension brought in more than the life insurance would have done.

She's got a year or so in her. Good bet for 2006 I'd have thought. And I know of one man at least who's promised to "tramp the dirt down".
-
I enjoyed his show in the 70s, but as he'd been off the TV for so long I wasn't sure if he was still alive. Bit like Stanley Baxter really. Does anyone know how he lost his finger?

I don't really want to get into the "Scotland vs America" thing, coming from neither, but many Americans should be grateful to the country that invented whisky and golf, and as for obesity, wait 'til they get them on deep-fried Mars bars! I like Willie the caretaker in The Simpsons as well.

Wow ... this guy appeared in over 250 films, though he was often uncredited early in his career. He specialised in playing short-tempered, unhelpful bureaucrats. Some of the best -known films he appeared in: It's a Wonderful Life Mr Deeds Goes to Washington The Cat and the Canary Arsenic and Old Lace He also, bizarrely, featured in a TV series of Dennis the Menace (which I thought was a uniquely British comic strip) from 1959-63. I'd have him in if he sees out the year.
