  1. Update to the above - not entirely clear from the statement but Hawkwind's social media seems convinced Brock's struggling to the point the band are carrying him now and the decision has been made to honour the existing tour dates and knock the live work on the head after A New Day (17 Aug) which is the final date on the current list. He celebrates his 83rd three days after he plays his last encore.

Last chance to see, then, though the man has a home studio and a contract with Cherry Red, so the albums are likely to keep coming.

  2. One of the Tories at Nigel Farage's  birthday party

Seriously, this is west end gold if someone were minded to put a production together on the last days of this government and the machinations because they still think there's a future for them.

Farage is a serial choker where taking on true leadership is concerned, and there's a track record of former colleagues chucked overboard at some point who've no particular wish to work with him again

Kinda like Mark E Smith's leadership of The Fall except Farage couldn't write anything approaching Cruiser's Creek to save his life!

So, to see a former PM reduced to this kind of ligging within 18 months of leaving office  is likely a new low for post-war British politics

This is what he said, almost as if to shut us up.

Aye, exactly the kind of message that makes sense to dead poolers - what posting name is he hiding behind on here?

I would love a good Elvis haunting story, something presented by Unsolved Mysteries, maybe. But these are chintzy cash grabs to activate what's left of that fanbase's coins.

I'll confess to an impulse buy in Tesco's whilst gathering Guinness to visit my mate.

The gist of it being his step brother (who coincidentally lives in the International Hotel Las Vegas and presents a one man show sharing his memories of Elvis) is the one claiming the spooky encounters. So, yeah a cash grab to scrape the dregs of die-hard fan base cash, for sure

They've had  a  bit of bad luck with drummers .

Their first big line-up change involved  a drummer flying through the windscreen near Scratchwood Services.

Yeah, if bands went in for twinning like towns do, maybe Fairport Convention and Spinal Tap would find common ground very quickly.

They don't need to be polling high nationally, just in Surrey, that's how general elections work.

Aye, and the polls are still largely presented as national whilst we've seen in those by-election Tory massacres of late that there's more tactical voting (pretty much anti-Tory) when people really give a shit. It's pretty well known  around Maidstone, for example, that the Lib Dems have Helen Grant in their sights, they tried without success to argue that anyone opposed to the Tories should vote Lib Dem to oust her in 2019. I'm thinking that's an argument that might work now. My local borough councillor has been Tory for years, in fact I think the ward's always been that way, but in May last year the local Green had a leaflet campaign arguing that he could beat the Tories if everyone other than a Tory voted for him, and he won.

  7. Fairly detailed predictions of a dire election for the Tories in today's Sunday Times. Portillo moments aplenty if this is realised, Sunak, Hunt, Mordaunt and Schapps all likely taking note and wondering how regularly they'll be washing their underwear in the coming months.

Safe seats in this tsunami include that of Kemi Badenoch, though - ironically - the poll suggests if she replaced Sunak before the big vote their fortunes would tank even further!

Oh aye, and, as I was discussing elsewhere a few minutes back, Liz Truss likely gets to serve again!

Aye, apparently impregnable, on a turnout around 51,500 in 2019 she took around 35,500 votes.

She's standing again and the shitstorm that'll likely follow the local elections probably won't touch her, either, because it'll be everyone's opportunity to pile on Sunak

Interesting stuff from an - apparently - reputable poll in the Sunday Times today suggesting the Tories are looking at likely less than 100 MPs, partly down to tight constituencies being vulnerable to the double whammy of Reform UK and tactical anti-Tory voting. Ironically, the one thing that made her own seat vulnerable was the stint she had as PM and the poll ratings just before she departed.

Martin Bax reportedly dead aged 90:

A few of my list above still hanging in there, just double checked on Peter Currell-Brown, Wiki has him as born 1936, no specific date, so he may already be 88

Notable how many of these hard drinking, keen-smoking and early adopters of the "waccy baccy" tradition have made old bones, eh?

I must have seen him at least a couple of times with Fairport.  Reading through Conway's Wiki page, that's quite a CV.

Aye, and a form spotters paradise if anyone spams social media with pictures from the funeral

Both charting drummers of Hudson Ford now dead.

Tenured with so many @maryportfuncity, surely you've seen him in person?

Yeah, as a Fairport - I've seen some of the other bands he played in (like Pentangle) but he wasn't at those gigs. Not sure, but I think he was with Al Stewart years ago when he did a short UK tour and played so close to me I walked there.

Cross-posting news of Gerry Conway's death, drummer with Hudson Ford.

He's on a few charting singles and LOADS of big selling albums - probs shifted the most records as part of the backing musicians for Cat Stevens' most lucrative days.

  13. Dave Brock talking to the Telegraph, has newly diagnosed heart condition and has to keep the marijuana in check because of "chestiness" - some suggestion that the next 11 date tour depends on his next angiogram (I've already got a ticket for New Day where they're scheduled to headline Saturday) - he's 83 in August, three days after headlining New Day
