    Read Any Good Books Lately?

Johnston explains his motivation behind the book here. "For what it's worth, my opinion is that reading and writing about awful acts are worthwhile activities because they put us in extreme situations and make us wonder how we would cope - not least, how we will cope with death, something we're all going to face sooner or later" I think perhaps that Paul should atone for his appropriation of our good name by becoming a member, assuming he's not one already. His next book is a sequel to The Death List currently entitled The Collector of Souls. I'm off to check the members list...

    Docter Docter!

I'm sorry to hear about your accident, Lady G. I hope the wounds heal quickly and easily, and that you feel better soon! I know what it's like to be single handed at a computer - but in my case it's because puss falls asleep on my arm, pinning it down and preventing my hand from reaching the keyboard. I'm such a soppy cat-owner that I wouldn't dream of moving her. At times like that I'm rather glad she's only a cat and not a Great Pyrenees!

    The Third 2007 Success Poll

My cursor landed on Dino de Laurentiis. A random choice. Rationale: a seemingly healthy colleague of mine dropped dead at work last week. He was 67 and had gone to work as normal but collapsed without warning and died on the spot. So I go along with ... ... the possibility of an unexpected result.

    George Melly

Thank you for your kind comments. For me, the most noticeable indicator for DLers is the apparent weight-loss since this picture was taken in March of this year (link from CP). The accompanying article mentions how little George wants to eat. If he loses a similar amount of weight in the next three months there won't be much of him left! The documentary that was being made is planned to be shown in the autumn. I wonder if he'll live to see it? ...And I hope that I'm not in it!

    George Melly

George performed splendidly! He sang three numbers seated in his wheel-chair, surrounded by carers, documentary-makers and Digby Fairweather's band. He's still a great blues singer. He looked frail but sounded in great spirits and talked to the audience between the numbers with a bit of prompting from his carers. It was announced from the stage that it would, indeed, be his last concert. They may not have mentioned that to George, though. This last pic, taken just as he left the stage, shows George with a woman (Edit: not Diana, as I had thought at first - she was wearing trousers) bending over him and a person whom I supposed to be a medical carer watching him anxiously. I caught sight of him as he left the building about 30 minutes later, transported on what looked more like a bed than a chair, but looking fine, all things considered! It was quite plain that his caring team were very anxious to have the show run without any stress on George. They were prompting him as he talked, urging him not to ramble on. Before he appeared, Diana (his wife) even sold off all the raffle prizes for a single reasonable offer in order to hurry along the proceedings and not keep George waiting in the wings, lest he become tired. A wonderful happy sad occasion. And Paul Jones, who acted as compere for the evening, was fantastic on the harmonica!

    London 2012 Olympics

At first I thought maybe there is a slight whiff of cunning design, the 2 looking vaguely like Britain the 0 like Australia, after that I drew a blank. Even the two 2s are different. The worst thing is that they've probably paid a or six or seven figure fee for some tosser conceptual design consultant to sit on their arse for several months then tell their three year old kid to piss around in the MS Windows paint application for 20 minutes and voila. Though I think that is a little unfair on the three year olds of Britain. I gave it the wooden spoon, along with around 83% of the voters thus far. I didn't have a three year old to hand, so I scrawled one out myself. On second thoughts, I might submit it as a logo design for the A-Z Map of London. Revised versions: etc, etc, etc...

George makes the turn and is running out of breath, Tammy is coughing, George falls - and breaks his leg. Long far away short near by A hand is to be raised' From my reading of various recent articles, I don't think they let GM out alone these days - but he sleeps on the second floor - that's a lot of stairs! I wonder if James is one of us? He has provided an unsolicited health check on George and news of a BBC documentary.

Tammy is running ... she is running To that door. My money (G Melly concert ticket money, that is) is on Tammy Faye getting there fastest. George is still making public appearances and apparently still enjoys performing despite an increasingly reclusive life. His doctor has suggested that he stop taking engagements after July, as stated by DDT, but this guy is a not going to give up easily and could hang on beyond our expectations. He clearly is making the most of whatever is left to him - 40 ciggies each day and another 20 at night; surely an eminently practical approach to lung cancer!

    George Melly

The website that purports (dubiously) to be the "official" George Melly site has brightened (if not smartened) its act somewhat. It is now advertising a Testimonial Concert for George and the 100 Club in Oxford Street, London on 10th June 2007. The links lead to a dead end (!) but if you're keen to attend I suspect that tickets will be selling fast.
