On this day in 2005  Liberal Democrat MP  Patsy Calton  died from  breast cancer aged 56. She was first diagnosed with cancer in 1997 and it returned early 2005.

Patsys political career began in Stockport Metropolitan council  were she rose to the level of deputy leader but was first elected to the House of Commons in 2001  , beating sitting conservative MP  Stephen  Day  but only just- she achieved an ultra slim majority of 33.

She was relected in 2005  with a much increased majority of over 4000 despite  not being well enough to  campaign for votes.

Patsy died less than four weeks after  she was relected and just five days  after she was sworn back in the House of Commons seriously ill in a wheelchair by speaker  Michael Martin.  Martin broke with convention at Patsys swearing in and shook her hand and kissed her saying Welcome home Patsy.

I think what happened to Patsy is terribly  sad so I hope this doesn't sound  cruel or insensitive  but I genuinely  struggle to put myself in her shoes  and understand why when she was clearly  dying  after her cancer returned in her  spine in February 2005  she bothered to put herself forward for reelection?

Perhaps some rules over nomination papers? I'm not sure but I do vaguely recall there was some muted criticism of the situation just after she died but it obviously didn't gain much traction because of the sadness of the circumstances and  fear of seeming heartless.

    I completely agree.

Genuinely surprised, she's a huge name in British TV screenwriting going back decades. Created Children's Ward which was a huge kids TV show in the early 90s, before writing the acclaimed Band of Gold, a who dunnit set among prostitutes which was considered groundbreaking at the time. She also co-created, wrote and directed much of The Syndicate, and lots of romance type dramas.. Her stuff really isn't my cup of tea but yeah, she's a massive behind the scenes name.

The first series of Band of Gold was pretty good, but it was definitely a case of diminishing returns. I just had to look up Children's Ward as I was certain it was a mid/late 80s programme. I was shocked to see it carried on until 2000 but more so that it started in 89. I was certain I was watching it when I was about 9 or 10. Faulty memory strikes again.

  3. He was in a Journey into the Unknown episode which inspired a Carpenters song. I think he may have been the last survivor.

Strangely I was only thinking about him last night as I trying to work out who is still alive from Morecambe and Wise sketches.

I thought dilligaf was universally known, but maybe not. I'm sure everyone here is smart enough to figure it out.

I deliberately left it anonymous, but people are free to state their preference if they so desire.

I didn't know it either, but there is a particularly belligerent forum member on the Manx forums with that User name, so the thought of him as the next monarch amused me.

Oh you meant the actual tweet - I guess dabbing the brakes like that causes people's heads to nod, so in effect all the passengers are agreeing that they're all cunts. Not as big a cunt as the driver, though.

I meant the tweet.  I get it now, thanks.

The Velveteen Rabbit a film so obscure I had to check it actually existed. Not even mentioned on the Wiki page of the book

    I don't like musicals

You must have seen One of Our Dinosaurs is Missing. It seemed to be on every Saturday in the 80s, most famously it is what replaced The Late Late Breakfast Show when Michael Lush was killed.

I have seen 9 or 10 of the films on the list.
