Moving this topic back on topic (and away from another one of YoungWillz's political rants), can somebody on here with a good understanding of medicine shed light on Corbyn's new spectacles? The blog Guido Fawkes is claiming he has a fresnel prism lens which is given to people who have suffered a stroke. Labour are of course denying any major health implications, instead saying he has an eye condition.

Editor left a note saying info came from his next on kin. Supposedly died in Denville Hall. News seems to be slow in coming out of there. I suspect an obit will surface in the coming week.

I always thought him very meh. You’ve got to be a pretty forgettable Labour candidate to lose to bloody Ken Livingstone in a mayoralty race in the Labour heartland of London.

Definitely a hoax. Her editor has confirmed on Twitter that she’s still alive.

I saw that. Which means she’d actually be almost 107. Though nothing that links the two. No mention of cricket. And the territories are different. ESPN’s McKenzie is NSW. That one is Victoria, though I suppose they are right next to each other. Hmmm annoyingly mysterious. -

I’m not at all convinced that Thelma McKenzie is alive at almost 105. Reason - no independent source that mentions her for decades. Instead she’s listed as alive on Wikipedia for the simple reason that he ESPN site doesn’t have a death date filled in for her. Can anyone shed some light on this? -

Qualifying Obit for Bert Mozley, courtesy of The Times. Does anyone know who the oldest living England international is now? -
My argument is that there is an argument to be made. Yours is that she is inarguably not a fraudulent case. Here’s a bright idea. In light of the new research, why don’t we wait for the conclusive evidence of her DNA samples being examined in greater detail, before we all take a side on this, seeing as neither of us can prove conclusively that she was or wasn’t.

Why don’t you try and come back with something of any substance? The researchers producing the doubts have had their papers published in science journals and their claims are now being taken very seriously. Do you not find it at all bizarre that between Calment and the 2nd oldest person ever, there is an entire 3 year gap. Additionally the fact that she was a smoker “until 117” is very suspect. If Madame Calment was really the daughter then she would have been 99 at death. I can believe somebody being lucky enough to be a lifelong smoker and reach 99. I find it difficult to believe that the oldest person ever was a lifelong smoker. Very few supercentenarians have smoked. I can only think of Richard Arvine Overton, and those were cigars, which probably weren’t inhaled. People don’t want to believe that it could be a fraudulent case because they’ve always regarded her as a bit of a legend, yet the case has all the hallmarks of a fraudulent one. The truth hurts.

I think she was pretty disconnected from the people living around her from what I read. If you look at the photos and examine the facial structures, the argument does hold weight. It will be interesting to see if they get permission to run DNA tests as they’ve requested, then we will know for sure.

No. 8 on your alive section, Bert Mozley, has just died according to Wikipedia and Getty Images. -
I hear people saying this all the time but the whole fraud claim around Calment is that she assumed somebody else's identity. If you do that then it isn't relevant how many documents exist because there's every chance they corresponded to someone else! The argument that she assumed her mother's identity is compelling. Go have a thorough read. The gerontology community are in denial at the moment as I think they're still in a state of shock, but a conclusion will be drawn under this at some point next year, and I imagine it will be that Jeanne Calment died years before and her daughter assumed her identity for tax purposes.

Providing that no current MPs die in the next 2 months, all of the incumbents who died in the 2010s were Labour members: 1) Ashok Kumar (1956-2010) 2) David Cairns (1966-2011) 3) Alan Keen (1937-2011) 4) Sir Stuart Bell (1938-2012) 5) Malcolm Wicks (1947-2012) 6) Jim Dobbin (1941-2014) 7) Paul Goggins (1953-2014) 8) Michael Meacher (1939-2015) 9) Harry Harpham (1954-2016) 10) Jo Cox (1974-2016) 11) Sir Gerald Kaufman (1930-2017) 12) Paul Flynn (1935-2019) With the exception of Jo Cox, who was murdered, what is it with Labour MPs that reduces their mortality? The Conservatives were in power for all of this decade bar 6 months, and so had more MPs, and a lot of old ones too, yet none of them died?
