    Derby Dead Pool 2007

Both don't apply to DDP, no. The DDP guys have put a "List of the Lost" which says what is needed, in terms of obits, so refer to that in future, if you're not sure. Well done to those who selected Hughes, btw. Talking of Lists of the Lost: My Computer crashed a couple of days ago and I had to re-set my operating system, losing my 250 strong Deathlist database in the process....

    The Boys Of '66

It's all getting rather poignant now. They're all geting on a bit and it's geting longer and longer as each championship skips by since English football's finest moment....So much for the much vaunted 'Golden Generation'!

    Damn, won't anyone die?

A fair point but I'm guessing the original lists were duller affairs in the pre-internet days. We can pour our ejaculations all over the dissolute human disaster that is Ms Love on the Forum and still limit the sacred list largely to those with a statistically greater probability of death. I know this year has been a disappointment in that regard but one or two missed sitters - like Lee Hazlewood - aside, there was nowt much doing in terms of near-certain death on New Years Eve. Oo-er, rather you than me mate...

Oh dear Man U, seems they can't quite cut it against the big boys... Time for Liverpool to teach them the Joy of Six!... As for Leeds, Leeds City bit the dust, so could United. I think they should do a MK Dons and revamp themselves completely: Call themselves Headingly FC or something and reinvent themselves as a family club and remove some of their bitter legacy...

    Derby Dead Pool 2007

Trouble is, RA, thats the trouble with picking nobodies. MPFC was right on the button with her illness, but it was always a risky shot 'cos of her fame. I think Grobler is very unlucky with June Callwood, and MIB with John Smyth, yet the f*****g Guardian give death row candidates obits! I honestly don't think NNIGN will win as most of their team are either dead without obits or reprieved and there's only a few more that could, theoretically get obits. I expect that some of the DDP "heavyweights" will bow out before years end and that the competition is still quite wide open. However NNIGN success is good as it makes it very likely death row/execution candidates will no longer be chosen, which can't be a bad thing. Yes...there's no justice is there, except for those on...er...Death Row!

    How Long Until We're Dickless?

There's also the equally splendidly-named (after an instrument of torture?) Irish political figure Dick Spring, but he's only 57 with no previous, sad to say. Dick Donner, director of 'The Omen' and 'Superman', amongst others...

    Football

With that level of gloating you might be accused of being a Man Utd fan in disguise, judging by the various forums and blog comments on the internet in the last few days.... I hope Exeter go up, although it would be nice for a new team to enter the Football League. Have Morecambe been there before? You can imagine the headline if there was a League Cup tie between Leeds and Morecambe....

    The Boys Of '66

So do I H, I went for Nobby Stiles purely on the name, imagine going through life called 'Nobby', what's it short for? When I was a kid there was a rag and bone man that came round and his horse was called Nobby. I had assumed, as I suspect was the case with the rag and bone man's horse, that 'Nobby' was a reference to him having a large penis. I imagine my disappointment was less than that of the future Mrs Stiles on learning that it was in fact short for Norbert. Edit to say: I see that TMIB has already given a more measured and mature reply. I would also add that I in no way mean to imply that men called Norbert are in anyway lacking in the toilet region. You're kind of on the right tracks as 'Nobby Stiles' is a slang phrase for a rather delicate condition, on the other side...

Cricket Thread. Only Mad Dogs And Englishmen

Is it me, or was that just about the worst World Cup ever? It went on forever, we all knew who was going to be in the semis. One of the coaches was murdered. Most of the teams in it were rubbish. It was played in front of a paltry attendance. The final was a complete farce. Australia won (again!). They should abandon the whole competition, replace it with Twenty-Twenty...

    The Boys Of '66

Since your entire post made no sense (it helps to indicate what you are babbling and blathering about----is this a sports thing or your college graduating class?) I wnet according to name feelings and good vibrations (boys of 66 reminded me of The Beach Boys) and then I selected Jack Charlton because it conjured up imgages of Charlton Heston. For those across the Atlantic unfamiliar with the object of this thread let me explain. The Association Football World Cup (known as 'soccer') was inaugurated in 1930 and first played in Uruguay, South America. England did not enter the tournament untill after the war, in 1950. In 1966, England hosted the 16 team tournament. They reached the final and won, beating West Germany 4-2 after extra-time (2-2 after 90 minutes). This thread refers to the recent death of one of the winning teams' midfielders, Alan Ball. The captain of the team, Bobby Moore, died in 1993 of cancer. The manager, Sir Alf Ramsey, died in 1999. The list of 9 in the poll are the remaining England players, the so called 'Boys of '66', who have been referred to in every World Cup (which is held every 4 years and was once, amazingly, held in the United States) build-up by the popular press in England ever since...

    The Dead - 2007

Chile in 1962 was hardly played at night in a frozen tundra, MIB..... Of the other 1970 teams: 0 deaths: Mexico, Morocco, Israel, Uruguay 1 death: Italy (Facchetti - cancer), West Germany, El Salvador 2 deaths: Belgium, Brazil, Peru, Romania, Sweden 3 deaths: Bulgaria (one of those was a car crash), Czechoslovakia 6 deaths: USSR 7 deaths: England Still a rather unusual amount.... Of course, not all the deaths above are heart-attacks & of England's, Moore, Hughes & Newton of course died after cancer battles. Er...actually not OoO. Chile is in the southern hemisphere, so our summer is their winter, so it would have been quite nippy... Not really surprising therefore that no Mexicans have bought it since....

    The Dead - 2007

1970 World Cup was in Mexico at high altitude, with matches played in the heat of the afternoon... As for Leeds, I read that Don Revie tried to procure Ball from Blackpool in not-entirely-legal means, but Ball did not err.....

    The Dead - 2007

6th? Who are the other 4? Make that 3...Osgood...make that 2...Astle.. Incidentially that tournament was played in Mexico...at high altitude...in the afternoon... You mentioned his wife and they were a real team together - she'd go everywhere with him, even to training when he was a manager. I think her death hit him hard. Let's not forget he was a great player. In the aftermath of the recent WC debacle, there was the contrary view that the '66 winners were a bunch of cloggers compared to the '06, but team spirit and all that was the key. Nonsense. England had great players: Banks, Moore, Jack and Bobby Charlton, Peters, Ball etc. The 1970 squad was even better....

    The Dead - 2007

This is a shame. Heart attack, so I ascertain from szhengd's link. Given the high, squeaky pitch of his voice I bet those last gasps for breath would have made an interesting ringtone. Cheers, BHB That's a bit of a shock. That's the legacy of stressful football management...
