Women's Olympic javelin gold medallist from Helsinki 1952 Dana Zatopkova has died aged 97. Coming seventh in the event in London in '48 spurred her to concentrate on the javelin (she also played handball) and she duly won in Helsinki with an Olympic record throw of 50.47 metres. In 1958 she set a world record with a throw of 55.73 metres; she came second in the 1960 Rome Olympics, and was also twice European champion. She was the widow of Emil Zatopek.

Its 50 years since Erle Stanley Gardner died aged 80. Best known as the creator and of Perry Mason, he was also a qualified lawyer and founded The Court of Last Resort, an organisation dedicated to pursuing justice for those who were imprisoned unfairly or couldn't get a fair trial.

Viv Stanshall's untimely end, aged 51, 25 years ago today, following a fire as he slept.

Eva Szekely, Hungarian swimmer who won gold in the 1952 200m breaststroke (and silver in 1956) after escaping the holocaust in 1944. Interesting obituary, even if you have little interest in swimming.

Performance artist Ulay (otherwise known as Frank Uwe Laysiepen (or maybe even Olay in his latter years)) has died aged 76. I admit to being ignorant of his work (and very exisence) but reading his obit, his 'performances' strike me as a least a little bit bizarre.

About the only bloody thing I'll ever win with this deathlisting lark.
