Things To Do While Waiting For Death

As a fun little diversion, why not see how many people were alive on the day that you were born? (N.B. Only works for post-1951 birthdays) It was a shade under 3billion when I surfaced.

    The Dead Of 2011

The Grauniad carries an obit of Sheila Allen, who died on October 13th. Principally a stage actor, she had a few memorable roles on TV and in films. She played Number 14 in The Prisoner episode A, B and C, and Cassie in A Bouquet of Barbed Wire (original version) and its sequel Another Bouquet. In film, she last played a witch in Harry Potter & The Goblet of Fire.

Only just getting an obit, but dying September 24th was Cecil Korer, TV producer and programme buyer. He was the man who brought Countdown, Treasure Hunt and Cheers to Channel 4. He was also producer/director of the first Top of the Pops and produced seven series of Ask the Family

    Life In Prison

The 'Onion Field' killer Gregory Powell serving life for killing LAPD Officer Ian Campbell in 1963 is suffering from terminal prostate cancer. The Califonia State Parole board voted against recommending a compassionate release as they believe he still poses a threat. Bearing in mind The Onion Field was a successful book and film, he might be worthy of future consideration. The Daily Mail loves stories of cop killers dying in jail.

I see your reasoning, and credit to KFG for the spot, but a team of nonagenarians & centenarians is a bit too much low-hanging fruit in my humble opinion.

Betty Driver Memorial Soapstar Superstar Thread

If the allegations do turn out to be true, wonder how he will be written out. Would be interesting to see how they would handle it Killed off unceremoniously I suspect. After being MIA and unmentioned for months no doubt Yes - soap characters who need to be written out quickly usually disappear to either Scotland or Spain. Then die. Writing out Betty will be fairly easy, she's hardly done anything for the past 40 years except serve hotpot. Kevin, on the other hand, has been a prominent character embroiled in several major storylines for nearly 3 decades. For him to suddenly and abruptly disappear would be somewhat awkward and embarrassing for them to say the least Assuming they need to write him out, it would be very easy. Telephone call to attend breakdown, crash, end of Kevin. But how about we wait and find out if he's guilty of anything first?

    Dennis Ritchie

Shitshitshit. Together with Brian Kernighan he wrote what are, in programmers' circles, called the Old Testament and the New Testament: Of course they aren't the original generation of computer gurus, that honour goes to people like Alan Turing, John von Neumann, Grace Hopper and Donald Knuth. Of these the latter is still with us. Fisher, Ritchie, Kernighan and others are effectively part of the second generation of cumputer engineers, who turned computers from lumbering dinosaurs which limited application to modern all-purpose tools. To get an idea what kind of computers they used: C was developed on (and for) a PDP-11: [snip] <picture of PDP-11> [/snip] That said: yes, they're going fast. Donald Knuth is another one to keep an eye on: at 73 he's getting on a bit, although in good health, AFAIK. He's certain to get the required obits when he dies. regards, Hein Having (almost) completely forgotten about C, you've triggered some nasty flashbacks. If I remember right, my introduction to C consisted of reading the above book and producing the message 'Hello World'. For anything more exotic, I resorted to Herb Schildt's Complete Reference still available from Amazon for £22.00; a little less than the £27 I paid nearly 20 years ago!

    Fort William Football Club

Fort maintained their 100% start to the season with a 1-0 defeat at home to Turriff (played 7, lost 7); Saturday's fixture doesn't look like changing that record - away to league-leading Nairn County. On the bright side, Strathspey have lost all 9 of their matches so far.

    The Dead Of 2011

OMG I am in tears right now.I can't believe he's gone.I grew up watching him as Doctor Who .This is terrible news Did it not occur to you that as my log-in name is 'time', my current avatar shows Paul McGann as the eighth doctor and has previously shown William Hartnell, Patrick Troughton, Jon Pertwee, Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, Sylvester McCoy, Nicholas Courtney and Lis Sladen I might just have mentioned Dr Who if he'd actually played the part? Come to think of it, do you think the BBC might have mentioned it? Ahem. You may have got older, but ...
