A letter in today's Guardian pays tribute to the chess columnist Leonard Barden - he's not dead, and might be going anywhere for a while, but I was surprised to find he's in his 90s. He'll be 94 in August, and eminently obitable.

Its 32 years since the death of Manley 'Sonny' Carter. Carter was a Naval aviator and test pilot, as well as an astronaut, flying as a mission specialist on the Space Shuttle Discovery mission STS-33. He'd previously been a naval surgeon and professional (association) football player. He was undergoing training for a further shuttle mission (STS-42) when he was killed in a commercial aircraft accident, the crash of Atlanta Southeast Airlines Flight 2311, an Embraer EMB 120 Brasilia, on approach to Brunswick Georgia. All 23 aboard were killed including former US Senator John Tower. He was 43.

I've posted the birthdays of one or two obscure people, purely to remind the assembled that they weren't always obscure (e.g. Dino Shafeek, Humphrey Burton). By and large I tend towards the older names, seeing them as prospective hits in the not-too-distant future, rather than popular names (or indeed unpopular names) in their 20s & 30s who (all things being equal) won't be on the reaper's radar for a good while. That being said, someone who seldom been mentioned here, Jane Asher is 77 today. (HPDPers might note she's also done Panto)

Sally Thomsett, star of Man About The House (with DL's Dicky O) and The Railway Children (in which, as 20 year-old she played the 11 year-old Phyllis) and also appeared in Straw Dogs, is 73 today.

Its 33 years since the death of Peter Jones, the radio broadcaster, chiefly for sport (though he did cover State Openings of Parliament, Royal Weddings, and Papal visits). Sometimes regarded as the last of the 'old school' style commentators, and held in the same high esteem as Richie Benaud and Bill McLaren et al. He commentated on every FA cup final 1968 to 1989 (though missing the '82 replay because he was on duty for the Pope's visit). hH covered 6 FIFA World Cups, the latter five as the main commentator, and was expected to do the same for the 1990 tournament. He witnessed first-hand both the Heysel and Hillsborough tragedies, and it is said he never really recovered from Hillsborough. He was commentating on the 1990 University Boat Race, aboard the BBC launch when he collapsed. Although taken to hospital, he died 36 hours later, aged 60.
