Its 27 years since the death of Eddie Egan. After serving in the US Marine Corp. Egan joined the Yankees Triple-A affiliate, but was recalled for service in the Korean War; following that service, he joined the New York Police Department, where he is reckoned to be responsible for more than 8,000 arrests over a 15-year career. He, along with partner Sonny Russo and other NYPD detectives broke up an organised crime ring seizing 112 pounds of heroin, an investigation that was recorded in a book The French Connection, later to be made into a film, with Gene Hackman playing the part based on Egan (whose own nickname was Popeye). Egan himself played Hackman's supervisor in the film. When the film was released, Egan requested retirement from the PD, but on the day he was due to retire, he was fired, for allegedly missing court appearances and failing to submit contraband weapons' and narcotics, thus losing his pension; he appealed and the pension was reinstated. Following his retirement, he took up acting full-time, appearing (usually as a police officer) in many TV programmes. He died, aged 65, from colon cancer.

You forgot Blue is The Colour! I was just looking at the 1972 list and saw Desiderata, a 'song' so awful I'd blocked it from memory; in fact it's so awful I don't know how it never reached number 1.

That doesn't sound very secret.

I assume if it was the Peter Kay, word would have got out. If they're secret gigs, how do you know about them?

Having tried reasoning, shaming, pleading with and even bullying (sorry) newbies in the past, all to no avail, I long ago decided the best policy is to ignore anything I find strange/annoying. (Occasionally I ignore my own advice though). -
Lewes will probably have her, Bozo, Sunak, Cruella, Priti...

The goal (about halfway through this clip), for those not familiar. Newcastle (of the top division) lead 1-0 courtesy of Malcolm MacDonald, with five minutes left when Radford of 5th tier Hereford scored an equaliser, taking the game to extra time, during which Ricky George would score a shock winner for Hereford.

South African tennis player and coach Leon Norgarb has died aged 96; he is, apparently unique in the world of sport as the only person to play in the majors of both tennis (Wimbledon & French Open) and golf (the Open, as a qualifier). He was also a South African Davis Cup player. He created ripples in apartheid-era South Africa by inviting Evonne Goolagong to play an exhibition, and garnered support for Arthur Ashe to enter the country.

Tom Brady and Gisele Bundchen have split. (Proper QO, none of your OK Magazine shit). -
Jerry Keller, Hank Marvin, Craig Douglas who all had number 1 hits in '59 still around. Whether they're 'rock' stars or not is open to interpretation.
-
Randomly, Prunella Scales, though from the West twitter she seemed to be doing OK for Tim's birthday not long ago.
