Its 34 years since the death of Sir Alec Issigonis, renowned motor car designer. Born 1906 in Smyrna in the Ottoman empire, Issigonis' family were evacuated to Malta just before the Great Fire of Smyrna, near the end of the Greco-Turkish War; Issigonis' father dfied shortly after and he and his mother relocated to the UK, where he studied engineering. While working for Humber, he began racing a self-modified Austin Seven, which led to him being employed by Austin. Moving to Morris he began working on designs for the Morris 10, but the war interrupted this work, but he continued designing, and worked on designs that would later become the Morris Minor. When BMC was formed by the merger of Austin & Morris, he moved to Alvis, however he was re-recruited back to BMC to work on 3 new designs, a large car, a mid-sized family car and a small town car. His work concentrated on the two larger cars until the Suez crisis necessitated the speedy introduction of the smaller, more economical, car. This car became the Mini, which remained in production from 1959 until 2000, with over 5 million being built. Issigonis was made a CBE in 1964 and knighted in 1969. He died aged 81, at his home in Birmingham.

Having given her a few viewings, I agree. Hosting/co-hosting quiz/game shows is a definite talent that not everyone possesses. She also, at times, comes across as a bit too fangirlish. Plus, she can't read an autocue/laptop without it sounding like shes reading, and demonstrates lack of preparation with her delivery (see also Ann Robinson) such that it comes across stilted and full of mispronunciations. (e,g. Jean Dujardin pronounced as in Harlow, rather than Luc Godard). She was pretty good with that St. Winifred's thing though.

Its 48 years since the assassination of Carlos Parts & his wife Sofia Cuthbert. Prats had been Commander-in-Chief of the Chilean Army, and also a minister in Salvador' Allende's government, until resigning amidst unrest. His second-in-command , Augusto Pinochet, who was thought to be loyal to Allende, and also recommended by Prats, was made C-in-C. This appointment removed any obstruction to a military coup and Allende was subsequently ousted. Immediately following the coup. Prats and Cuthbert exiled themselves to Argentina. Barely a year later, both were killed by a car bomb after leaving their apartment in Buenos Aires. It was later learnt that the bomb was the work of the Dirección de Inteligencia Nacional, the Chilean Secret Police, as part of Operation Condor, the US-backed campaign to remove opposition to right-wing governments in South America.

There's an 'Other Lives' obit in The Guardian, by Seán's widow, Anna, which doesn't mention Daniel, from which I infer it wasn't.
