    Death Anniversary Thread

Its 31 years since the death of British actress Carol White. Known as the ‘Battersea Bardot’, her acting career began with a series of uncredited brief appearances in popular films of the late 50s & early 60s, including a couple of ‘Doctor’ film and a couple of minor credited roles, including as a saboteur in Carry On Teacher. She came to greater prominence with her appearance in the BBC Wednesday Play production of Up The Junction, and subsequently the title role in Cathy Come Home which lead to the lead role in Poor Cow. A move to Hollywood saw her appearing alongside major stars such as John Mills & Dean Martin but was ultimately unsuccessful. By this time she was heavily abusing drugs and alcohol. Returning to London, she starred in Steaming, in the West End, but was sacked after persistently turning up late. She also made her final film at this time, 1982’s The Nutcracker. White returned to America, living out the remainder of her life, dying at the age of 48. Some sources claim a drug overdose, while others, chronic liver disease from years of alcohol abuse.

US film director & screenwriter Ron Shelton is 77 today. He was a minor-league baseball player for four years, notably within the Orioles organisation, and his original scripts are primarily sports-based, most notably his first, Bull Durham, partially based on his own experiences. The film, starring Susan Sarandon, Kevin Costner & Tim Robbins, garnered an Academy Award nomination for best original screenplay, as well as winning the Writers' Guild of America best screenplay amongst others. His next screenplay was Blaze, based on the book by Huey Perry, starring Paul Newman as the Louisiana Governer who fell in love with a young stripper (Blaze, played by Lolita Davidovich, who would become Shelton's wife). His original (sport-based) screenplays also include the critically acclaimed White Men Can't Jump & Tin Cup.

    Death Anniversary Thread

Its 37 years since the death of actor, director, painter & poet Julian Beck. He began as a painter but its as founder and director of The Living Theatre that he is most famous/notorious. He founded the theatre with his wife, Judith Malina, in 1947, and was director until his death; the experimental theatre was designed to challenge, as well as entertain audiences, with one production of Jack Gelber's The Connection featuring actors playing junkies circulating amongst the audience begging money for their next fix. Beck's experimental philosophy carried over into real-life, with him and Malina being imprisoned (by her count) 12 times across three continents for acts of civil disobebience, including once in New York for failing to participate in a civil defence drill, and once charged with (later acquitted) indecent exposure for a production of Paradise Now. Later he took some cinematic action roles, the most well-known cinema role (and his last on the big screen) was as Reverend Henry Kane in Poltergeist II with his last role being an episode of Miami Vice, which aired posthumously. Diagnosed with stomach cancer in 1983, he died 2 years later, aged 60. He was inducted into the American Theater Hall of Fame in 2004 (as was Malina).

    The Happy Birthday Thread

Sir Wes Hall is 85 today. Half of the feared Hall/Griffith bowling partnership, he began his cricketing life as a wicketkeeper/batsman, taking up bowling later. He was included in the 1957 WI squad to tour England in 1957 despite only having played one first-class match. He wasn't called upon during that tour, making his test debut the follwoing year, versus India in Bombay, despite initially being left out of that squad (coming in as a late replacement for Frank Worrall). The West Indians won te series 3-0. There immediately followed a three test series v Pakistan, where Hall became the first West Indian bowler to take a test hat-trick. He played three seasons in the Lancashire league, for Accrington CC, taking 100, 106 and 123 wickets. he also played a notable role in the 'tied test' of 1960, entrusted to bowl the final (8-ball) over, with Australia requiring six runs and the West Indians requiring three wickets (after a 134 run 7th wicket stand) , with over going 1 W . 1b 1 2W W, the final 2 wickets being run-outs as the Australians tried for the winning run (the over also included a dropped catch off the fifth ball). In his 48th test, v New Zealand, Hall was injured which prevented him from continuing bowling. and the injury prevented from playing in the following test, and was never selected again. He continued to play for Barbados until 1971, before retiring from playing. After retirement, Hall entered politics becoming the Barbados Sports and Tourism Minister. He later became an ordained minister in the Pentecostal Church. He was knighted for services to sport in 2012.
