I was tempted to pick a bunch of old CAS members for the Cup but I couldn't find your list of the old ones in the 2 minutes I searched before giving up.

    Benjamin Netanyahu

A reminder that back in the nineties small steps were being made towards, if not peace, understanding. Then a fanatic, inspired by the words of Benjamin Netanyahu, shot Israeli leader Rabin dead. (In case you think I'm being unfair, a few weeks before Rabin was shot, Netanyahu led a protest march where he brought out a noose and had folk chant Death to Rabin.) Despite inflaming a situation that directly lead to the assassination of a political opponent, Netanyahu was able to take power afterwards, on the basis of being the strongman who can protect Israel from violence. And any time moves were made on either side (not enough of course) he was there to snuff them out. He built a coalition of the fearful, the trusting and the xenophobic. The attacks in October were an existential crisis for Netanyahu, because his entire career is based on being the strongman who prevents this, and it turned out his entire life was built on bollocks and lies, and his own actions had made things much, much worse. The IDF attack on the charity workers doesn't surprise, because Jeremy Bowen (well known BBC journalist) was specifically targeted in 2000. There's been a flexible definition of enemy combatants used in the past, for which the buck stops with the man in charge: Benjamin Netanyahu. For the terminally thick (not you, Willz), this does not mean the anti-semites are right. Fuck them. Israelis have a right to exist same as the rest of us, and racists can get to fuck, but... the Palestinians also have those rights. This is only going to end through some form of two state peace treaty, and the warmonger leaders pretty much need to be removed for any chance of that to succeed. (This includes Hamas, who aren't the voices of all Palestine as much as Netanyahu isn't the voice of all Israel.) It's not surprising, but it is extremely depressing. I can't see either side getting rid of their cunts, and meanwhile, children and innocents continue to die horribly.

    The 2024 Crowdsourced Deathlist

And many thanks for a speedy and stress less succession. TCD will be in good hands.

    The 2024 Crowdsourced Deathlist

I will update this (eventually) when I have time, but consider this a 8 month warning that if forum regulars want the Crowdsourced DL tradition to continue in 2025, you are going to need a new host.
  5. Everyone is so antsy for this election now that the papers are printing daily predictions of hypothetical elections. It's like this forum every December with the What's your Shortlist and Who Should be on the Deathlist threads.

    The Happy Birthday Thread

Currently a survivor of the dreaded Pointless Celebrities chair of doom. She looked rough when that was filmed a year or so ago.

Looked even better then. Genuinely would have passed for early 70s. Marcia Warren is younger and looked a lot older.

William Gaunt is on BBC 4 right now reminiscing about No Place Like Home. Recently turned 86 and looks amazing for his age.

    Deathlist Cup 2024

Team in, if its needed. Good luck to all. Hard fought match @ThereWillBeDeaths7 - could still turn decisive in the last hours of the month.
  10. He's an idiot. Before his first Twitter ban he was doing twitter exposes of trans women, which is already dodgy enough, and had a habit of getting confused by actually non-trans women, like a social media Don Quixote. He became an ardent climate denialist and vaccine doubter and has gotten so bad on his issues even Musk's Twitter banned him. When Channel 4 are willing to work with anyone he burned his bridge there, because of one episode of an unfunny sitcom. The Father Ted team stuck by him even after all this only for him to demand they publicly backed his views, which led to him getting axed from the musical. His agents dropped him after standing by his side because he made them choose between himself and David Tennant. He's lost money, friends and family because he's absolutely unhinged and sees enemies everywhere. If it weren't for his death threats to people you'd almost feel sorry for him as he's clearly mentally ill but so are a lot of people who don't destroy everything they know and love. See, JK Rowling still has friends (including liberal friends who disagree with her transphobia), and money, and influence, so I'd dispute that being "trans exclusionary" is enough to get you cancelled. You have to put a lot more effort in, like Graham has repeatedly.
  11. Point of information - a very quick Google suggests there are at least a dozen chippies within Uxbridge and possibly more because that was just a cursory glance and it's Britain and fucking chip shops...

Actually not seen that episode as I only watch them after reading the original. However he's only the bloody murderer in one of my favourite Taggarts! Also in The Fabulous Bagel Boys which I enjoyed but is now forgotten.

    Baseball

I love that episode and it's genuinely all I know about American baseball. Wade Boggs became real life best friends with the late great wrestler Curt "Mr Perfect" Hennig and Hennig saved Boggs life for real about twenty five years ago when Boggs badly injured himself on a camping trip.

    How’s Your 2022 Shortlist going?

The BBC film editor (who I think from Google might also be the author) who did interviews at the time about her glioblastoma. At the time I think I just picked her in response to some actual BBC folk not getting QOs at the time, but looking back she was very, very obscure and almost certainly would have been FFBI blocked nowadays.

    The Dead of 2024

Directed Anybody's Nightmare starring Patricia Routledge about the Sheila Bowler case from the nineties. I was tempted to pick Bowler for my Oldies DDP team last year but iirc there were rumours she died off radar a few years ago so wasn't worth the risk.

    Political Frailty

A religious Scottish MP from the central belt who supported Celtic and their two biggest interests being Ireland and abortions is so on brand it's a stereotype. Say what you want about the nats and we do, their rise wiped out a number of rubbish MPs. (In general, I know McAvoy went in 2010.) Well that sucks.

    @YoungWillz take a bow lad, you've ninja'd Thatcher to a death!
  20. At this rate the year 3000 isn't a Busted song, more a prediction of how long this round will last.

    Big Brother

5 but swap Nikita for Ekin Su (who was on Traitors USA and is now suddenly bloody everywhere) and it's the same list.

    Rishi Sunak

I just can't resist it when people ask why non binary things are binary. Plus defending a mate. Christ how big is this list of people we apparently need to cancel now, this is meant to be my weekend off...
  23. msc

    Rishi Sunak

Toast and iirc Gooseberry hate Meghan Markle for some reason (not a request for details) and no one has cancelled either of them or has any plans to. Death Impends is a lassie and has my support 1000%. Churchill was flawed yes but absolutely the right man to lead us in Ww2. He is a reminder that great people can make terrible mistakes but be there when everyone needs them the most. See also as a useful example here Gladstone, who went from being a young racist, then through educating and bettering himself, became a Victorian champion for human rights. British history is full of amazing inspiring stories and people. It's also full of horrors because the former tended to be reacting against the latter. But I'm quite happy to celebrate the greats while acknowledging the shit bits. It doesn't make the good stuff less inspiring, in fact it makes it more so. Like in Star Wars without the dark side hurting the galaxy Luke is just some farmer. Think that covers most of it.

    Deathlist Cup 2024

Good to see @Bibliogryphon advance. I admit I have fond memories of the year he got to round four of the cup because his opponents kept getting DQ'd for not sending in teams!
  25. So we all need to pretend to like the Tories for one week in march to trick Sunak into calling an election?
