    Near Misses for 2005

Eh, not everyone reads the rest of the forum posts -- me, I only read the near misses and actual hits threads. Maybe I should do better research. I apologize profusely.

Playwright August Wilson dead of liver cancer at 60.

Nazi Hunter dead? I guess now we'll have to resort to cracking more of the Bible Code from the Torah to track down the rest of 'em.

You're inferring another vacancy is likely, so who's gonna snuff it or retire? You mean, other than O'Connor, who has already said she's retiring? <crickets>

I'm not as concerned about Roberts being a chief justice as I am whomever is going to be nominated to O'Connor's spot. Alberto Gonzalez has been a name in circulation, and my bet is that he's even more conservative than Roberts. Bush wouldn't have re-nominated Roberts to Chief Justice unless Roberts was likely to be confirmed as Chief -- meaning, he has to appeal to both Democrats and Republicans alike. He's under a finer microscope than the other Jusice that Bush nominates will be. So, with all that in mind, I think the most conservative Justice appointed by Bush will be the one that he names NEXT -- not Roberts.

    Fats Domino

No confirmation of this as of yet, and I hope he's ok, but Fats Domino has been reported missing in the Hurricane Katrina aftermath. http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/09/0...o.ap/index.html [Moved from "Near Misses" thread -- MH]

164 posts predicting his imminent demise this year and still no death. Come on, peoples......be patient. He'll die eventually, I promise...

I don't trust too much of what comes out of Washington, especially when said "facts" are emanating out of the mouths of LAWYERS!

I'm pretty sure Rehnquist has been on the court for most, if not all, of my life. In fact, I'm not that old (almost 24) but I definitely don't remember Dallas or even who J.R. was, let alone who shot him.

I'm pretty sure ingesting a file or saw would kill you....so let's hope they DON'T.

    Near Misses for 2005

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/TV/08/07/j...obit/index.html Peter Jennings died today after a 4-month battle with lung cancer. Didn't put up much of a fight, methinks. My granddad lived for 10 years with pancreatic cancer. :-p Don't know if he passes the fame test in the U.K. but since he was born Canadian and naturalized American, he only needed a few more citizenships to be world renowned.

    Near Misses for 2005

http://www.cnn.com/2005/SHOWBIZ/Music/08/0...t.ap/index.html Don't know if he passes the fame test in the U.K. Hell, I don't know if he passes the fame test in the U.S.A or even the U.A.E, for that matter. Apparently CNN thought he was worth a mention.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,164810,00.html Apparently he wasn't admitted to the hospital, merely evaluated and sent home. Sure, two hospitalizations are enough to get your hopes up, but apparently he was told that fever is common to cancer sufferers..... Probably won't kick the bucket tonight, it seems.

UH OH. http://www.cnn.com/2005/LAW/08/04/rehnquist.ap/index.html Come on, buddy. It'll be good if he dies for deathlist, but bad if he dies before the elections if you place any importance on civil liberties in american jurisprudence.
