    The Beatles Death Curse

I've found that to fully appreciate how influential Elvis, The Beatles and Dylan were, you have to put yourself in the position of looking at their music in the context of the time, based on what else was around Elvis wasn't the first rock 'n' roll singer but he was the full package and very different from the others at the time The Beatles did bog standard pop tunes at first but the key thing is they were writing most of their own stuff - and this writing gradually developed as they matured, particularly from Rubber Soul onwards. They were massively influential on what came after Then there's Dylan - Like a Rolling Stone is one of the most important songs ever because no one had attempted a 6 minute song, nothing out there was quite so negative lyrically, and of course he has quite an unconventional voice; all 3 of these things can be found as a running theme through most rock music since I agree that to a certain extent it's all white people congratulating white people for doing stuff that white people like - all these music magazines and websites like Rolling Stone and Pitchfork are run by white middle class men and generally focus on white middle class men. That's rock music for you. It's just a classic example of the white Westerner's belief in his superiority. But I don't really want to get into the rockism and popism debates, though - it's pointless. It's just arguing over which discourse is the best

Doubt we'll ever see a more predictable suicide That said, not predictable enough for her to get onto my DDP team...

Heh, wouldn't be the first time - Cyril Knowles died from a brain tumour less than 2 years after leaving us But everything's been suspiciously quiet. It's been described as "headaches" and "a virus" (but at the same time the club have also said he's "undergoing tests" to find out what the problem is - if they didn't know it was a virus, why did they tell us it was?), along with talk that he's been ill for some time. But morale and confidence amongst the players has dropped off a cliff (not that it was particularly high anyway), and we're now looking for an experienced interim manager until the end of the season - and, if you want to be cynical about it, why would the club actively go out to hire an experienced manager knowing that he'll want the job full time if they know that the current manager will return, aside from our dreadful form? The fact that the LMA were brought into it suggests it may either be some kind of stress-related issue (in which case, I can't see him remaining manager for much longer) or a serious illness of which we're not being told the full extent. There's something not quite right about this

My team's manager is off sick with a "debilitating illness". Could just be stress, of course, but no one seems to know at this stage

OK, he's going on my DDP team for next year. Was tempted for this year as shown by his inclusion in my shadow list as he didn't look great in those England adverts in the summer. But he's clearly beyond the point of saving now. Going downhill faster than Best, and in different areas too

Where Will The Next School Massacre Be?

In fairness, the number of shootings may not be different to usual - they're just further up the headline charts because it's flavour of the month here. And at that point it becomes voyeurism because there's absolutely nothing we can do to change this if we don't live in the US

Hope DDT doesn't take tonight's result too badly...hehe Seriously, Torquay were pretty terrible on the ball and we sunk back into our own penalty area again late on. Just can't understand why Tisdale thought it was a good idea to start with no strikers in a League Two derby

Where Will The Next School Massacre Be?

How about blaming the people with the guns who go out and do the shooting? They do that too, but it's about why these people do these things. Clearly there is an argument to suggest that some are caused by attention-seeking or a desire to gain notoriety. It's not a coincidence that the number of mass shootings has shot up as television has developed and news coverage has become much larger - school/college/university shootings are largely a phenomenon of the second half of the 20th century, starting with the University of Texas shooting in 1966 I know not everyone here is a Charlie Brooker fan but this was very good, especially the psychiatrist's comments from 1:40 on: These suggestions aren't the be-all and end-all for preventing these things from happening but not following the advice certainly isn't going to stop them

Where Will The Next School Massacre Be?

There is always a surge of copycat shootings in the weeks and months after such disasters. Psychologists blame the media for portraying them too dramatically and making the killers out to be anti-heroes, but the media don't take any notice and keep reporting them in the same way
