You make a very good point and introduce a timely reminder. Anecdotal coincidences do not make a coherent theory. Off the top off my head I could think of several hihh profile politicians from Scotland (Robin Cook could be added to that list and someone has already mentioned John Smith) who had died relatively early over the past generation, I extrapolated that with a flippant comment but as all good statisticians know you cannot draw conclusions from small samples sizes. Even if someone ran a full statistical comparison between ages of Death of MPs representing Scottish constituencies and the same for English ones you would need to be wary about drawing any firm conclusions because of the disparity between the sizes of cohorts.

Since Devolution there have been six first ministers of Scotland and two of them are now dead. In the same period all eight UK Prime ministers are alive. If you look at people like Alistair Darling and Charles Kennedy being a Scottish Parliamentarian should come with a health warning

Updating my charts I have the following observations. 1. The 2024 list has now drawn level with the disastrous 2011 list but that list did not get its sixth hit until Dec 7th. 2. The next worst list of recent times 2014 finished on 10 Hits but at this stage if the year was on 7 Hits with the eighth coming on day 294 (10 days) 3. The 2020 list was at 14 Hits by this stage of the year 4. The most deaths that have been Hits on the list in the remaining part of the year is 6 so double figures is achievable
