  1. I think the Tories are being cowardly by not fighting this by-election. Effectively they are saying they know that local people don't want the third runway but they don't care. If they really believed in it they would put someone up who can argue against Zac. It is arrogance of the highest order.

If ZG does go back into the fold before 2020 he will be the worlds biggest sellout (Ken Livingstone would have to give up his trophy)

  2. Update for Zac Goldsmith.

  3. Did anyone pick Nick Boles?Has now got head cancer which typically has a 50/50 chance of survival. He also had non hodgkins lymphoma in the past so it might be connected.

Nick Boles is not a pick.

    All the best to him.

I'm thinking Alexander, Chess, Gary Sprake, maybe Dave Colclough and as a throwaway Valerie Hunter Gordon.

I presume they won't want to do Emery and Alexander in the same episode.

Having held her back thus far I'm assuming not, but who knows (unless you're the producer of the show).

No but I do think they should do a TV version. One evening a week. I am thinking Sunday on BBC4. They should start at about 9pm with a Last Word type show where they show 4 x 15 minute min bios for four recently deceased celeb followed by a TV show or movie closely associated with one of them and then finally late into the night they have the Deathlist show where we look at the whole issue from an irreverent and competition based format.

    Is there anything better on?

  5. I am expecting a flurry of activity as I have just drafted the pick list for my work game for 2017. The list has 450 names on it but after I filled in the missing years there was only room for one random addition so I went topical and added Hillary Clinton.

The players will get the list on Dec 1st but normally as soon as I draft it I have to make changes.

He has been touting himself round the media since winning the Palm D'Or but does Ken Loach look worthy of consideration in the near future or as he always looked like a dour skeletal phantom of doom?

The latter. He was going to retire a couple of years ago then changed his mind. If he does actually stop making films he might be worth thinking about, until then....

Have I mentioned before that I hate that book.

It was compulsory reading when I was at school. They used to quote it in assembly. They leave it in hotel rooms in Barnsley.

My hatred of it comes from having to read it at school. Otherwise I would be blissfully ignorant of it.

I have just crunched some numbers comparing acts that had UK No.1 hits in 1957, 1967 & 1977.

In 57 there were 11 acts who had a No.1. Still living there are four solo artists (Tommy Steele, Tab Hunter, Paul Anka & Harry Belafonte) in addition there is one cricket (Jerry Allison) So 4.25/11 is 38.6%.

    A similar analysis for 67 gives 7.33333/12 = 61% and for 77 12.683333/16 = 79.3%.

The only person who is on more than one list is Paul McCartney.

So we should lose 2.7 acts from the 67 list in the next 10 years.

Putting aside the question of why, this is an interesting piece of analysis. Of the '57 names, Tab is writing books, Paul is still performing, Harry is still an activist and Tommy is crap as Glen Miller (a horrendous piece of miscasting). Hard to say who would go first (though Tommy Steele is dying more often). What about letting us see the rest of the lists?

Here are the lists.I have expanded 67 but left the groups intact for 77.
