  1. Boots are now charging their customers a "delivery charge" if they order goods online and collect them from a store. That'll really attract customers away from the competition, won't it!
It's free if you spend more than £20. There are many stores that don't even allow you to order online and have it delivered to a store, or you have to order it while you're in the store.
I know it's free if you spend over £20. That isn't the point. The point is that their direct competitors (eg Superdrug) make no such charge at all, so it's not a very good business move to introduce charges IMO. I would say that ordering online and collecting in store is becoming an increasingly common system. I don't know of any other retailer that charges its customers extra for this. It doesn't cost them anything to implement it as the orders are simply added to the regular stock delivery.

Hot Topic in the U.S. charge if you order online to have shipped to a store. The only way to avoid the charge is for one of the sales assistants to do that for you at the store itself.

I think that customer chasing is now a thing of the past and now businesses are wanting quality not quantity. Those customers that cost them money (or don't make them very much) can go to their competitors and they will concentrate on the best customers. Customers may have to adjust their actions accordingly. I imagine free returns for online orders will not be around much longer.

  2. Well bibliography has finally contributed a grand to the forum. Now as I understand bibliography is the scholarly study of books or a collection of works by a specific author. What inspired you beyond explanation to register with such a name?

If you really want the extremely nerdy answer to the question. I was on another site and wanted a name that reflected both my love of reading but also have a fantasy element to it.

Intially I went for Bookwyrm but this had already been taken and rather than add just a prosaic number I thought more laterally and literally so Bookwyrm became Bibliogryphon. I liked it and decided to use it for this forum as well as I didn't stay very long on the other site and didn't want to waste the name.

  3. 2. Yesterday on the train I completed the first draft of my 2014 entry form for my works competition, now that I have got the line up of 400 they will start dying to make the list out of date.

It will be worse after 02nd December when I circulate the list. Last year I lost six picks before the competition started.

This does not constitute scientific evidence.

Sods law that - I drafted an "as it stands" DDP list a month ago (giving it a bit more though, seeing how badly I did this year) - and a whole quarter of that bloody list has since popped their clogs.

At least it shows you are thinking along the right lines.

    This is my 1000th post.

  4. I am predicting that the next week or so may see a bit of excitement in the Deathlist circles maybe not one of the 50 (forty one) but some of those on the DDP lists and peoples planning for next year.

There are two reasons for my prediction

    1. I am going to China where I find it difficult to access the list and the two times I have been earlier this year brought the deaths of Henry Cecil and Ray Harryhausen.

  5. CC, really? I can't think 5% of any of these are obit worthy here in the UK, and I guess they are not that old and not that ill.

More over maybe 5% of the UK population will have seen this show more than once because it's basically made up, fly on the wall crap.

Sorry but you would be better off looking towards old Hollywood and finding value in getting that right before wasting long shots from two-bit shows, few over here watch.

I would agree with you if this were 3-4 years ago. The Daily Mail online in the last 2 years or so has been trying to appeal to the Us market, specifically the types of people in the Us who read stuff like TMZ and or People magazine. If you combine that with the show Survivor itself reliant on stunt casting and constant returning players the last few years, has turned some contestants into quasi celebs. It certainly increases the pool of past contestants who could get UK Obits. Even BB an obscure 2nd boot who wasn't even on my list of people who would get a UK obit scrapped by with a Daily Mail obit last week.

This show is a complete mystery to me, I have never seen it and only its discussion here has brought it to my attention.

Is it even shown in the UK?

  6. You might be right, but the tense she uses "Some writers.... have published books" just seems to me to imply she's talking about the recent past. Either way, she sounds smug in a way that imo she has no right to be.

I also think she is over optimistic about the integrity of her family and publisher. I suspect when she does die they would happily publish her shopping lists if they thought money could be made from them. (I know nothing of her specific family but other literary families do not give much hope)

  7. “The King of Skiffle”, British singer Lonnie Donegan, died on the 3rd of November 2002 because of a heart attack aged 71.

Beside his 20 Top 30 hits his No.1 singles were: Cumberland Gap (April 1957, 4 weeks), Gamblin’ Man (June 1957, 2 weeks) and My old man’s a dustman (March 1960, 4 weeks).

It is a pity he did not live longer because surely he would have been the first person to go to for the theme tune to the latest James Bond film. He could have formed a "Skyfall" band.

Obviously an Adele fan - he even included her picture.

  9. There's a

that actually features an interview with Penny Forsythe, although she sounds remarkably clear for someone in a retirement home.

The only other residents that appear on-screen are at 1:12, but they're not identified. I think that might be Dickie on the left though?

Daily Mirror article says Bruce is still visiting and caring for his first wife. Apparently, she was moved in five years ago, after it became impossible to care for her at home. Also, mentions she had a stroke.

That article includes the line: "His infectious smile and bubbly character brighten up living rooms across the country every weekend."

So, it's my problem if I think him a twat and leave the room when Mrs MPFC starts indulging her Strictly passion, then?

You will be able to watch next week as Bruce gets the week off.

  10. It is worth remembering that the Portuguese Police have actually concluded their case once already, and the official finding was that the McCanns were responsible for concealing Madeleine's death, if not direct responsible for killing her.

Goncalo Amaral is using this official report in his defence against the McCann's libel claim. His own theory was not a million miles from my own, in that she was accidentally killed and that the parents then covered it up. Should he be successful in his defence he will be free to publish his book, 'The truth of the lie' in Britain, should he find a publisher to carry it.

I for one would buy this book. Mostly for Mrs Bibliogryphon to read as this is her pet subject.

I would approach it as another view on the facts from someone who was close enough to be knowledgeable but it would be read in context and after reading this i might pick up the Kate & Gerry propeganda to compare it to. However, it is possible that this could be an attempt to cover up any mistakes the Portugese police might have made during the investigation but I expect it would be less partial than Kate & Gerry's book.

It is hypocrisy in preventing publication of this book whilst flogging thier own.

  11. In keeping with his drive to better serve the poor Pope Francis has abandoned his traditional gold cross in favour of an iron one.

Which is fine as a symbol of austerity but if Pope Benedict has awarded himself an iron cross there would have been hell to pay.

  12. Jimmy savile's former driver has been found dead , after being charged and failing to turn up for court.

    http://news.sky.com/...mith-found-dead

I suspected one of these people would kill themselves , but I thought rolf would of been the one to top himself.

Dead men don't tell no tales, either that or he is a coward.

I don't think this guy was Savile's driver, this is somebody else. It says in the report that this case was unconnected to Savile.

This guy was a BBC staff driver (I think).

  13.

Also, any money made by the Tapas 7 off the back of their involvement would be seized of they were ever convicted of an offence connected to her disappearance. They were all doctors/partners of doctors and, personally, I think the lot of them were drugging their kids for a quiet life and Maddie was the unfortunate one who OD'd. By revealing the truth, they'd all be struck off and in no danger of being able to continue the lifestyle in which they were accustomed. The idea of losing everything you've spent your life working for is a strong motivator.

I think this is close to the nub of the matter. If the McCann's were in any way responsible for the death of Madelaine particularly if inappropriate administering of drugs were involved they would have realised the consequences of this very quickly and they would need to cover it up. If this was common practice amongst the group that would explain the silence.

This is possibly just the result of complacent adoption of bad practice to 'improve' their holiday. No premeditation just negligence.

Thanks EGN for your candid comments

  14. This is a non-stater for me.

    Definitely Nelson.

DOE has been deathteasing for the past two years along with his long lost cousin in law George H W Bush.

At the beginning of the year I thought all three would be dead certs this year.

Shows how difficult this thing can be.
