"Bibliogryphon, please will you post another irrelevant list that no-one is interested in?"

Go on then you twisted my arm.

The Royal Society of Chemistry was formed in 1980 from the merger of two previous societies. The post of President is held for two years and therefore there are quite a few people who might make good picks and all should get at least a broadsheet obituary but if not I am a member of the society and they will get one in Chemistry World. Harry Kroto is probably the only one who would be mentioned on the news though.

There are 11 surviving past presidents and the current president (who is the first woman to hold the post)

    Sir John Cadogan (1930-

    Sir Jack Lewis (1928-

    Sir Rex Richards (1922-

    Edward Abel (1931-

    Anthony Ledwith (1933-

    Steven Ley (1945-

    Sir Harry Kroto (1939-

    Simon Campbell (1941-

    James Feast (1938-

    David Garner (1941-

    David Phillips (1939-

    Lesley Yellowtrees (1953-

    Dominic Tildesley (?

Updated for the newly elected President who will serve for two years. I cannot find any reference to his year of birth but I suspect he is contemporaty with Lesley Yellowtrees as he states he was an undergraduate in the early seventies.

    Anthony Ledwith has died.

    and now Harry Kroto.

They seem to be dying more quickly than they can be elected.

  2. The BBC used the link to our site to support their More Celebrities are Dying narrative but it doesn't stack up because just because the list is the same size every year all it means is that our committee are getting better at picking them. We could have a massive hit rate or none at all but loads of other celebs could be dying (or not) off list.

Having said that my game at work has a record breaking eight hits for the month of March.

  3.

It is only May and we have a lot of low hanging fruit.I don`t think any names on the list are bad picks really.

It is not a record-breaking list anyway. It can rely on Havelange, Lamotta, maybe Ali... and then? Zsa Zsa proved to be immortal as well as Fidel. Gall, Noakes, Mary Tyler Moore, Piggott, Gascoigne are wasted spots... If they only put Howard Marks or Jenny Diski in it would have been less spectacular, but probably record-breaking.

Howard Marks is a huge miss yes but Diski was probably not famous enough.Gascoigne is clearly off his tits again judging by his twitter feed and looks like death.Moore is apparently bedridden senile and blind and John Noakes has advanced Alzheimer`s.None are dead certs but all are decent enough picks in my view.

Diski got a big obit from the New York Times. Can't say the same for Michelwhoevermore or Crowe.

Anyways, my prediction now is that we'll really slow down in pace and get about 10.

2 of the old, frequent picks (Bush, Havelange).

    2 randoms.

1 of the terminally ill (hopefully finally James).

But Marks was a counterculture figure whose exploits where known across Britain and further whereas Diski was although a brilliant writer not a household name.Unless you were a literature buff you would most probably not have heard of her outside deadpooling:P x

I am a Literature buff and I hadn't heard of her outside of deadpooling circles.

I think the one to watch from the Hi-di-Hi cast would be Barry Howard (b.1937) who played the professional ballroom dancer he was apparently often seen as a dame in Pantomine alongside John Inman.

Allo, Allo it is definitely Sam Kelly.

    Within 3 years, both gone.

But within those three years he has not been picked for the DDP once.

Do we have any ideas about who might actually be in the frame as running mates for the the two front runners.?

Could Hillary pick Bernie to unite the party?

Can anyone work constructively with Donald Trump or would he agree to an establishment imposed running mate as part of the negotiation for his candidacy?

I pass this over to those better informed than me.

Well, Trump might pick Chris Christie, who seems to be his biggest fan out of the people from the race. I don't think Ben Carson's lazy "endorsement" was good enough for Trump.

Other than that, it's a mystery, since most politicians despise him.

Hillary might want to choose Bernie to unite the party, but Bernie probably wouldn't accept. Both of them have considered Elizabeth Warren (an amazing lady who I'd definitely support if she ran for president). Hillary also considered "rising star" politician Julian Castro. This could help her with the Hispanic vote. Problem is she doesn't NEED any help - Hispanics will flock to her to stop Trump. She's also considering Tom Perez and a couple of female senators, also former Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano.

Chris Christie would seem like a shrewd pick because I imagine he would appeal to those centre ground democrats who might be gently pulled away from Hillary but if he can do that sharing a ticket with Trump will be a big ask.

  6. Not really . LiLo is in Chyna/Amy Winehouse I won't be surprised if she OD's tomorrow mode with the general public and Randy Quaid is a 60 something hobo squatter now and Britney Spears had that whole head shaving sent to a mental ward thing .

Yeah but those names out of all that could be chosen why not Bob Dylan, Liza Minelli and Courtney Cox

No idea what bearing if any (I presume none) it has on our little game.

Labour has suspended MP Naz Shah over comments she made about Israel.

    SC

    http://www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-36148704

None at this moment in time, all it means is she's currently sitting as an Independent rather than a Labour MP. But it may lead to her being forced to quit Parliament, which would trigger a by-election. She's been very contrite about it all though, and it has been dug up from before she was an MP. MPs have done and said far worse than this and survived, at least until the end of the Parliament. I'd be surprised if we get a by-election out of this one, which suits me fine as I don't have her. :D

Nobody does. I suddenly lost interest in the whole story.

For the past three years I have cross referenced my 1000 name long list against all the DDP picks and the following list is the twenty oldest people on my list who have not been picked in each of those three years.

    1. Peter Brook – Theatre Director (b.1925)

    2. William McPherson – Judge (b.1926)

    3. J P Donleavy – Writer (b.1926)

    4. Margaret Stuart-Barry - Writer (b.1927)

    5. Shirley Hughes – Writer (b.1927)

    6. John Habgood – Former Archbishop of York (b.1927)

    7. Babs Chinnery – Beverly Sister (b.1927)

    8. Teddie Chinnery – Beverly Sister (b.1927)

    9. Jeanette Charles – Actress (b.1927)

    10. Kate Wilhelm – Writer (b.1928)

    11. Nicolas Roeg – Writer (b.1928)

    12. C W McCall - Singer (b.1928)

    13. James Ivory – Director (b.1928)

    14. Peter Firmin – Producer (b.1928)

    15. John Barton – Theatre Director (b.1928)

    16. John Woodvine – Actor (b. 1929)

    17. Tony Soper – Naturalist (b. 1929)

    18. Clifford Rose - Actor (b. 1929)

    19. Lynne Reid-Banks – Writer (b. 1929)

    20. Jack Higgins – Writer (b. 1929)

However looking at this list suggest more about the sort of names on my long list rather than being real suggestions for 2017.

Fuck sake, there's two there - Donleavy and Soper - I'd totally forgotten were still with us. Thanks

I saw a picture of Soper somewhere recently and he looked quite good for age. He'll probably die tomorrow now. I'd forgotten Roeg was still alive actually.

I think the one I would propose for the list would be John Woodvine but I am not sure how famous he is to non-obsessives. Everyone would recognise him but they may not be able to put a name to the face.

    No health information on him.

  9. In addition to the quote from Sign O' The Times I posted in #199 there is also this little gem

"....skinny man died of a big disease with a little name......."

  10.

Biblio do you think you might have a list problem, should we book you into list rehab?

I can handle it. Sometimes I can go days without creating a list....... I'm fine, I really am.

How are the 'Listaholics Anonymous' meetings going btw ?

Not well. The first thing we do is write a list of all those attending and then cross reference it against previous attendance. We then all have a drink so we create a list of who wants coffee, tea or other beverage and by the time we have done that we compile a list of future meeting dates.

I am definitely going again next week.......

  11. "Turned on the TV and every other story is telling you somebody's died"

Prince, Michael Jackson, Whitney Huston - The three black megastars of Eighties pop all died early..............
