Well, I think the moon landing was peak USA (perhaps peak mankind). Then it went downwards but the collapse of communism was another victory. And then there was the Internet and all that. Also, China wasn't ready yet. So I think the era ended not too long ago. The American century began in 1918 and ended in 2017. The moon landing (and Nixon) is almost right in the middle. Almost by design.
