Next suggestion, just to throw the name out: Barbara "Barbie" Handler, aka daughter of "Barbie" inventor Ruth Handler. 82 years old now and upset that Margot Robbie and Greta Gerwig did not receive Oscar nominations (except for the script).

Huh.... I always thought that Rasputin and Dschingis Khan were produced by the same person. Turns out that Ralph Siegel only copied Frank Farian.

DDP pick for one team, though.

Damn, I think we had him briefly in our sight last year. He did have some problems.

Sadly, I think that's going to be Canadian Ice Hockey player Glen Cochrane. Padgett might have to wait until the year-end BBC round-up.

I predict the grim reaper is going to confound sceptics and be its most powerful yet like a super strong enema in 2024 moreso than recent years equalling or even beating 2020

Well... Sunday is still only on 5 notable deaths on Wikipedia. So it's actually one of the quietest days that there are. -

Small Shaun Ryder interview: https://www.theguardian.com/music/2024/jan/21/sunday-with-shaun-ryder-i-would-be-out-on-my-bike-now-if-i-wasnt-talking-to-you So far he's got one false hip, a chip in his spine and thyroidism. He seems to be doing alright, all things considered.

I think I've cleaned up my inbox enough - team submissions are open. Good luck! Also, for the next round, I think I want to draw the whole bracket for the rest of the competition at once. I'm looking at: https://challonge.com/de/tournaments/bracket_generator.html, for example. Don't forget to pick a joker!

Alright, let's see how this goes... 42 competitors have signed up, so the first round will consist of 10 match-ups to get down to a full roster of 32. The 20 highest-seeded players (or is that lowest-seeded?) will face off, i.e. those from no. 25 to 45 (with Pop_Zeus sitting out). So the list randomizer of random.org gives me this: Gooseberry Crumble (26) Famous6eva (42) GuyFromFuture (28) Liz Lemon (25) CalebH (29) Bibliogryphon (34) livingbygrace (new - 43) Therewillbedeaths7 (35) Dying Probably (37) max bossetti (new - 44) Wormfarmer (41) Thatcher (new - 45) Yorkshire Banker (27) DeathByArsenic (39) The Immortal (38) justonecornetto (36) GreatUncleBulgaria (40) MortalCaso (33) theoldlady (32) BabyBlue (30) I interpret this as: Gooseberry Crumble vs. Famous6eva GuyFromFuture vs. Liz Lemon CalebH vs. Bibliogryphon livingbygrace vs. Therewillbedeaths7 Dying Probably vs. max bossetti Wormfarmer vs. Thatcher Yorkshire Banker vs. DeathByArsenic The Immortal vs. justonecornetto GreatUncleBulgaria vs. MortalCaso theoldlady vs BabyBlue

Now, I also think that a big death is coming very close. The past days have been too quiet. Yes, I have a feeling someone big is going to die today. We may not know it for a day or two, but I have a feeling it's happening today.- 619 replies

It's time for the first update of the year. Let's start with the three DeathList hits, Glynis Johns, Franz Beckenbauer and Derek Draper. Obviously, Draper is a huge hit in this competition. Several players even score joker points. You might not have risked him in a Top 20 list, but most top 50 lists had space for him. Beckenbauer was almost as popular as Draper, though too old to be a joker. His quick death barely into 2024 was even surprising to me, even though I pretty definitely knew that 2024 was going to be his final year. Finally, Glynis Johns, a classic deadpooling pick who is a welcome score booster for a lot of teams who might not go for the usual ambulance chasing. Next hit, Brian Barzcyk, Reptile enthusiast. His decline almost seemed to be accelerating by the day. He was already a cult pick during the 2023 DeathList Cup, where he was picked regularly by DevonDeathTrip. He survived that season very well, and looked to be in good shape, judging from the lively videos throughout the year. But since November, he was definitely on the way out and just barely managed to reach 2024. Three teams score with previously immortal Mario Zagallo. He looked like death warmed up for years, but really managed to reach an age that footballers hardly do. Seriously, are there any other top football players in their 90s? Personally, I suspect that drugs, steroids, exercise, bad nutrition, and so on shorten the lives of top athletes. Franz Beckenbauer at 78 was also not that old, and still managed to die from Parkinson/heart problems/eye stroke/basically everything. Next hit is socialist director, and more importantly (...) Kate Beckinsale's step father, Roy Battersby. A hit for several teams. At least, he also got a few obits that pointed out his own achievements, not just his relation to Beckinsale. For example, a Guardian obit. Now, Joyce Randolph. We've sort of moved from "last famous people famous before WW2", via "last famous people during WW II", to "last famous people of the 50s". Being famous in the 50s already seems like an historical outlier, when it's now the 60s stars that appear on the Deathlist (like Eastwood or Hackman, the former had the breakthrough with Rawhide in 1959, the latter had a slow 60s until he got the Oscar nomination in 1967). Now, Joyce Randolph, last living star of The Honeymooners, dies and is a hit for two teams, Cpt. Hemlock and The Unknown Man. As far as I can tell, those are the hits. But if I missed anyone tell me. I haven't yet got the names of this competition memorized, so it's likely that a name slips through. Now, in other news: You saw the disqualifications from the DDP. As the rules state, the disqualifications of the DDP also apply here. Cricket player Jonathan Mills and Bruce Murray of Home and Away got disqualified, several players are victims, me (x2), Wannamaker, RadGuy, msc and Cpt. Chorizo. I have replaced them with your first subs in my excel file. I will adjust the masterlist shortly. My own two subs for Mills and Murray are astronaut Tom Stafford and ice hockey coach Mike Sertich. The resulting scoreboard sees Perhaps with a super-sprint out front. RadGuy and me a bit behind. Franz Beckenbauer was a valuable differential. Perhaps hit almost every target. Not a bad guess. He has said that he's already decided. He chose Mike Pence because he wasn't sure about having a grip on evangelicals. Now he does, and as a typical mob boss, he'll choose a no.2 that is no threat to him (which is why Hitler chose the slightly simple-minded Rudolf Hess). So it's not going to be anyone who made an impression during the campaign, like Ramaswamy. Stefanik, he assumes, might help a little with women. Other choices would be Joni Ernst or the South Dakota governor whose name eludes me. It has to be someone slightly more loyal than them being high-profile.

German author Dirk Oschmann falls from stage, gets hospitalised: https://www.spiegel.de/kultur/literatur/dirk-oschmann-bestsellerautor-stuerzt-in-ilmenau-von-buehne-a-117d517f-443b-4ec3-ac8d-d46b68131f0c I'm only posting it here, because he was mentioned at my local party meeting last week, so maybe it's a sign.... He writes about the still persisting differences between East and West Germany, especially about the cultural narrative.
