The List keeps scoring with the good but not great picks. Good for the record, IF the great picks die.

Too bad Sims and Suisala didn't obit... I would be running away with this. But it's the right punishment for wading through the swamps of FFBI-picks.

The NYT obit should be guaranteed...I think... let's see tomorrow. Edit: NY Daily News and NBC local so far Edit: Daily Mail: https://www.google.de/amp/www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-4551068/amp/Fireman-got-cancer-aiding-9-11-recovery-dies.html

The full name was my favorite name to speak out loud..I just wanted to say that.

It's a good list. Now you'd have to compare the number of deaths in this age range with the number of deaths in the average range of life expectancy, say, a list of musicians that died at ages 76-78. Maybe there's an anomaly there. Though I guess, to be perfectly comparable, you'd have to wait 7 years until those that are 69-71 years old now, are 76-78 years old.

I intend to submit something as well, though I am sonewhat dissatisfied with the choices.

I could kick myself for not picking him in the Rotten Dead Pool. I was seriously thinking about it but decided against it.

Article on that statue unveiling next month with lots of text from Colin Meads himself. http://m.nzherald.co.nz/sport/news/article.cfm?c_id=4&objectid=11859426 He'll be around at the event next month and says that he's going to be around for a while yet - which can be believed I guess. He'll have another small operation soon to cut some nerves in his stomach. Still, that event is now described as his "last public appearance" - quite a change from his "I'm going to beat this". He's in a bit of pain right now and it sounds as if it's going downhill from here. Surviving into the 2nd half of the year is still quite the success, I think.

True, and Stefan Karl already looked bad at his Reddit AMA. But Swayze's treatment lasted longer until the tumour spread. So at that time, he might have declined into the state Stefan Karl is now. Shortly after it metastasized, Swayze had pneunomia because the chemo destroyed his immune system, or so he said. On the other hand, one could argue that Karl's cancer is more aggressive in general.
-
His gofundme page updated yesterday with the above news, confirming the Twitter chatter: https://www.gofundme.com/2tm9tqk Coincidentally, I compared his case to Patrick Swayze today. Swayze also initially responded well to treatment, but then it metastasized to the liver and it went downhill from there. Swayze died 20 months after the diagnosis, and 9 months after it spread to the liver for the first time. Chemo apparently beat it back for a while until it returned to his liver and then five months later he died. So I'd say Stefan's death will most likely occur between Octobre 2017 and February 2018. However, Swayze was a chain smoker, but also in good physical shape before the illness. And Swayze was a bit older. So Stefan Karl is still slightly more likely to die in 2018 than in 2017, I'd say. 60-40 chance or something like that.

Deadpooling is a quick business. We want our picks to die quickly and discard them when they fail to perform. But sometimes, a year of patience pays off (Caroline Aherne, John Hurt, Martin Crowe,...). I like to mention people at the cusp of obitability and let other people contemplate the chances. Sometimes it works (Jimmy LaFave, probably Van Zandvliet, cancer mum XYZ), sometimes it doesn't (Amy Reed, Darren Sawchuk, cancer mum ZYX). Maybe Dr. Reed still gets a Guardian obit at some point, through the feminist anti-medical establishment angle, or maybe a Telegraph obit, with her treatment of the Boston Bomber back then.

Dr. Amy Reed, anti-power morcellator campaigner has died at age 44: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/24/us/amy-reed-died-cancer-patient-who-fought-morcellation-procedure.html?_r=0 I mentioned her way back in 2015: It looks like the UK obit hasn't materialized, in spite of the prominent NYT obit. Interesting medical story, if you care.

Stevie Chalmers, who scored the winning goal for Celtic in the 1967 European Cup final, has dementia: http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/sport/football/football-news/celtic-hero-stevie-chalmers-battling-10496272 Not the only one on that team to be in that state, as Billy McNeill is now unable to speak.

Shameless will get a couple more hits, but as long as Bracknell/Downie/Christie/King Michael die, one should disregard it for the title. It gets interesting though if they don't. Golden Slumbers then gets the 10 pts from Van Zandvliet and the rest is a bit shakier (Cryne likely dies this year, but it's not a lock). Stefansson might survive the year, Golmard will survive (in my opinion), Nevin may be a fraud? Here's my view of Shameless' potential, as of now: Aundrea Bannatyne: Dying this year, but the obit is not sure, it might depend on that ITV journalist, as in Mark Sims' case. Irfon Williams: Dying this year, obit a bit likelier than Bannatyne's. Might still end up in the BBC/ITV local sections though. Cheyann Clark/Shaw: Eh, bad pick Emma Houlston: Silence from her, but probably not dead yet. The obit would be surprising. Cpt. Chorizo also picked her. If she obits, Shameless ends up at least in the Top 20 at the end. Heidi Loughlin: Completing her bucket list. Solid pick. Good obit chances, but not a lock for 2017. Bobby Zarin: His wife said he was recovering from surgery. Obit is sure, but death isn't. Leanne Hock: Too ill to go on holiday this month. But the obit is unlikely. Sophie Sabbage: Definite obit, but stable, treatment is currently working Juan Pedro Franco: Had surgery this month, no news on whether it was a success, definite obit, but might survive. A total gamble. (The previous recordholder Manuel Uribe also died during his weight loss period, if I recall correctly. The body was already too damaged.) Laura Saull: Very ill according to twitter, emergency hospitalization this month, now on chemo (so there's still something that can be done), but the obit is very unlikely since she stopped blogging a long time ago Gemma Nuttall: Now on palliative care. That treatment in Germany never happened because of seizures (5 brain tumours). But the obit is very doubtful. I'd say there's no "will die AND obit" case anymore. But a couple of cases may make it through. Maybe 3-4 picks. Shameless then may end up with around 130pts (my scoreboard has it at 133pts right now).

True, a couple of days ago he also tweeted that he was excited to register to vote today. So unless there's early voting (no idea about that!) and he wants to vote from beyond the grave, it's probably not that bad.

Bruce Corbitt, of Warbeast and Rigor Mortis, has esophageal cancer, stage 3 or possibly 2: http://loudwire.com/warbeast-rigor-mortis-bruce-corbitt-diagnosed-esophageal-cancer-announces-retirement/ Curiously, I already had him on my longlist (#512) because of heart failure and money problems, and I suspected drug use, hmm...

Small indirect update on the cancer fight of my reserve team joker Gary De Carlo: http://mynewsla.com/hollywood/2017/05/04/cancer-battle-for-hey-hey-goodbye-singersongwriter-dems-sing-tune-to-gop-over-obamacare-repeal/ The cancer has invaded several body parts. And as his signature song is still in heavy use, I think the obit is becoming fairly likely. But he's still active and not on death's door yet.
