David Elmore Smith posted two weeks ago (in a comment to his Simmons tribute) that he was in the hospital for pneumonia but feels much better now. 349 pounds currently. He may start posting again in Decembre. Pulling a Nikocado Avocado?

Damn, our list could have gone up to 15 hits or so with a perfect selection. Though of course, getting them all correct was statistically extremely unlikely.

I like to think that I was responsible for getting him, and Franz Beckenbauer, on the list. If that's the case, sorry, committee, I only got it half-right. If there are hard decisions to be made, Barenboim is probably on the chopping block.

Welcome to the next itineration of everybody's favourite obsessive-compulsive disorder, the DeathList Cup is back. We say goodbye to our previous host Spade_Cooley who hosted the game for two years and impressed us with his incredibly broad knowledge and ability to find a quip for every claim to fame, from pop culture to lesbian authors. Thanks a lot! The new management is me, gcreptile, who has decided to not defend the title and focus instead on being the most impartial, perfectly objective host possible. This means that the title is up for grabs, and, provided JoeyRuss also maintains his retirement, the winners of the past three years will not be competing. So if you want to add your name to the Hall of Fame, consisting of deadsox, DevonDeathTrip, An Fear Beag, Spade_Cooley, JoeyRuss and myself (x2), or if you want to add a second title to your name, this is the grand opportunity. These are the rules: The Deathlist Cup 1. This is a knockout tournament featuring one-on-one matchups between Deathlist forum posters. These matches will be determined by use of a random draw, using Random.org. 2. Unless we happen to end up with 2/4/8/16/32/64 entrants, then certain competitors will get byes to the Second Round. This will be based on results from the 2023 Cup: ie, winners first. 3. Please specify your wish to participate until the end of January 20th by posting in this thread, so that we can determine what the first draw looks like and if there are byes. 4. Players have a 10 day period of submitting their teams. For the first round, if you have not received a "bye", please send me your team by PM between January, 22nd and January 31st. the end of the month. For February, submissions open on February, 20th. The time zone is Greenwich mean time (GMT) in every case. 5. Your team has to consist of 11 main picks and three subs, so a perfect team would look like this 1. Adam Ant (joker) 2. Bob Backlund 3. Chelsea Clinton 4. Didier Drogba 5. Erika Eleniak 6. Frank Field 7. Green Gartside 8. Harry Hill 9. Ilias Iliadis (gold medal winner in the men's 81kg judo at the 2004 Olympics) 10. Joe Jackson 11. Kevin Keegan subs 12. Lennox Lewis 13. Meghan McCain 14. Nick Nolte Please explain who some of your more obscure selections are, should googling them not lead to an easy result. 4. Banned picks – we will have slightly higher fame requirements than before, matching my own perception of a slightly higher fame barrier in the DDP. Examples: - "Influencers": A minimum follower count of 100.000 in any one medium - "fame by association": Fringe and family of famous people will only be accepted if society has already been thoroughly aware of their existence, for better or worse (like Amy Price). - local fame: If the fame is "too local", they will not be allowed. High school coaches will not be allowed, "popular bar owners/traffic guides/etc..." will not be allowed, "town originals" will not be allowed. The notability has to extend somewhat beyond their own backyard. We will still allow college football coaches/players, elected politicians at every level, and no-name artists if their work can claim some recognition beyond their hometown. - "Awareness raisers"/"Cancer mums": Only those with nationwide impact will be allowed => I'll try to aim for something slightly higher than before, but still lower than the DDP 5. If in doubt, submit a pick, but the decision of the ref (me) is final and is not open to any court of appeal. If you think it’s a dodgy pick, it probably is. 6. Each match will take place over the course of a single month. For example, a February match would take place from February 1st to February 28th, a March match from March 1st to March 31st and so on... 7. Games will be scored in the following manner: A person in your team dies = 3 points A unique person in your team dies = 1 more point (ie 1 bonus point) Fatality – Your joker. Double points 9. Here is what happens in the case of a team member dying prematurely (ie on 29th Feb for the March game). If you discover this before the 3rd of the month, your top sub will automatically go into place. If it is discovered on the 3rd or after, sorry about your luck. If it turns out the person was dead and known to be (this is determined via a reference in a newspaper or magazine, not social media) then subs don’t come into play. This will upset at least one player a year. Will it lead to a huffy forum stormout in 2024? Let's see. 10. At the end of the month, the player in the match with the highest score wins that game, and will advance to the next round. The player who doesn’t have the highest score will lose, and be eliminated. 11. In the event of a draw, the following tiebreaks will be used: 1st tiebreak = number of hits 2nd tiebreak = average age of hits 3rd tiebreak = a coin toss 12. A player is only held to one team for a single match. If they win their match and advance to the next round, they may pick eleven entirely different people for the next round. In this way, folk who announce their terminal illness in, say, May, can be put to good dead pooling use. 13. Qualifying obits? Every single English-language newspaper, magazine or significant website, provided that they are not automatically generated by AI. Also Le Monde, Le Figaro, Der Spiegel, Die Zeit, El Pais, El Mundo and Corriere Della Sera. If they still can't get a QO from that, then they really weren't famous. 14. For the removal of any doubt, any players who do not send in their team before the deadline will be DQ'd and replaced by the highest scoring loser. No matter how many sad PMs you send afterwards. This draw takes place in Month 1 (ie January) and is for matches taking place in Month 2 (February). After the draw, each player sends me (via PM) a team of eleven celebrities (and some subs hopefully) they think will snuff it in Month 2. Good luck and sign up to take part in this thread. Entries close by January 21 with the draw to take place immediately after.

Cher looking good on Kelly & Mark presenting her memoirs (first part). https://livewithkellyandmark.com/upcoming/83605/ Yes, that's what I'm watching right now! Also, Tieghan Gerard has never eaten a single gram of what she cooked herself, nor anything else.

Weird. I just realized he had the fall in Greensburg, PA. Which is exactly where I've been since yesterday. Anyway, go on...

I assume they gave him the "offer" to have the surgery and become a Putin supporter or refuse and ..either die or have the surgery refused, meaning, the balcony jump might actually have been suicide. Either way, there was somebody else in his room when it happened.

Supposedly, he has cancer. I don't even believe it's true - or at least exaggerated. But I still believe that he'll escape most of the punishment "naturally". And he's 83 years old. Australia just had a similar case with swimming coach Dick Caine. Now, Dick Caine was already too sick for trial 2023, but only died in 2024. Still, Alan Jones in 2025, is kind of likely, in my opinion.

Third BBC article about somebody with cancer today. Darren Gleeson, Irish championship winning hurler: https://www.bbc.com/sport/articles/cx284x78rxzo Edit: I assumed Irish rugby/hurling can go here, too. Hope it's not too wrong.

Okay..... I will be in the United States in the next two weeks and will be back on Dec 3rd. The 2025 thread will be opened after my return, please be patient. So let's have an update before I leave! Once more, I try to catch all the names by mainly going back through time. The most recent hit is Yuriko, the Princess Mikasa. A member of the japanese imperial house, she was one of the people who symbolize a 'last connection' to a different era. The last member of her generation, and the last member of the house to be born during the reign of Emperor Taisho. Perhaps and The Immortal score. Next one is Timothy West, a unique (!) hit for Sod's Law. The almost unthinkable happened and he died before his dementia-ridden wife. Let's hope Prunella Scales' dementia is so far advanced she doesn't realize Timothy's death. Sod's law indeed... Further back in time is the death of June Spencer, British radio soap icon for many decades. Probably one of the oldest people ever to get that immediate BBC obit. A hit for quite a few people in this competition. Next up is the alleged murder of Suzy Lamplugh, John Cannan. Well, he did serve prison time for other crimes as well, including at least one different murder. But he was only mentioned on Wikipedia in relation to the Lamplugh case, two years ago. I checked that back when he was diagnosed with cancer, but I see that he has since "gained" his own page. Well, there you go. Two people, BuffaloPhil and Imelda kept the faith and were rewarded by luck, because it was not cancer that eventually killed Cannan. Nobody picked Quincy Jones (!). But many, many players picked Janey Godley. For some, her cancer battle was an attention-seeking, possibly exaggerated moment, but for many others, it was a battle that they knew would end rather sooner than later. And the end came pretty fast for the sort-of stand-up comedian. Next up is Teri Garr, a hit for six players. Her screen career started with a little assist from Jack Nicholson, got pushed by a first big role in Star Trek and then grew through her comedic talent into an Oscar nomination. After that, as was usual before the age of streaming, her career then declined back to TV roles (today, a TV/streaming role could actually be the real peak of your career). Well, she kind of had a second career as the deadpooler's go-to pick for multiple sclerosis. She did live quite long with it though. Then we get to Phil Lesh.... no! He wasn't picked, so I can't make the joke of writing an obituary for him than just goes on and on and on and meanders, like one of the Grateful Dead's concerts. Ah well, going through wikipedia, the not picked people are a theme this time, no Mitzi Gaynor, no Yahya Sinwar, more miss than hit in this update, unfortunately. Philip Zimbardo however was a unique hit for Charles De Gaulle, congratulations and thank you for that. Also, thank you Mr. Zimbardo for creating the meme-like Stanford prison experiment that probably inspired dozens of movies and Star Trek episodes. Now I've heard that the experiment itself was unethical, or done wrong, but maybe that's where scientific truth and wishful reality don't go together? Well, maybe there'll be a Netflix documentary on it eventually (somebody telling me there is in 3,2,1...). Next hit then is Tylee Craft, college football player from North Carolina. He had been diagnosed with lung cancer and a well-publicised battle with it for over two years. News were alternatively positive and negative. Yet, the 100 points made the gamble worth it for Banana and Cpt. Chorizo. So yeah, two out of three best-placed players picked him. Not me, however. So as a consequence, it does look like the likely winner of this competition will be one of the two players who picked Craft. After here, I am unfortunately getting a little tired - preparations for the trip today, and such, so in short fashion, we have Ethel Kennedy and Lily Ebert. Holocaust survivor Ebert was a unique hit for Lady Fiona, who also had a hit with Mrs. Kennedy. Kennedy was a far more popular pick though. So, did I miss anyone? ... double-checking ... oh dear, yes, Geoff Capes. Pedro67 scores a unique hit with the strongman, shot-put champion and Olympic competitor who died at 74 - almost the average life expectancy, something the musclemen rarely achieve. ...Aaand Cissy Houston is a hit for Toast and The Quim Reaper. Thank you DDP fatality list. Houston herself had a decent career as an RnB/spiritual singer but was made definitely obitable by her daughter. Now all deadpooling attention for that family will be focussing on her cousin Leontyne Price. So I hope I did it all right and this is the scoreboard: Rank Team Score 1 Cpt. Chorizo 1337 2 Banana 1299 3 gcreptile 1217 4 Book 1126 5 wannamaker 1102 6 RadGuy 1090 7 msc 1082 8 Perhaps 1041 9 Funeralopolis 1025 10 Summer in Transilvania 961 11 Salmon Mousse 950 12 Mr. Wonderful 923 13 Buffalo Phil 880 14 Toast 827 15 Liz Lemon 821 16 The Immortal 810 17 Torva Messor 785 18 Pedro67 765 19 The Unknown Man 758 20 tracy 745 21 An Fear Beag 731 22 Wormfarmer 729 23 The old lady 694 24 Thatcher 681 25 Etushipushingupdaisies 663 26 Baby Blue 661 27 MariNisia 648 28 Imelda 626 29 Predictor 615 30 Death Impends 607 31 DeathBecomesThem 601 32 Cpt. One additional note: Unfortunately, I just saw that I previously had assigned points to RadGuy for Irish cook Joe Shannon. But since Shannon hasn't received a QO, I sadly have to take them back...

Ah, I misunderstood Biblio's post on the 1st. Not Spade's 2nd unique, but the game's.
-
So Spade_Cooley only lost out on the win because of one other player also picking Sinfield...as close as possible!

Very nice, season 3! I'm also very partial to "What year is this?".

And it wasn't even cancer that killed him but a ruptured aneurysm: https://www.peeblesshirenews.com/news/national/24726153.murderer-john-cannan-died-prison-ruptured-aneurysm-inquest-hears/

One of my few remaining, living personal heroes. Should he go on the DeathList would he need a new thread? I was just going through the internet, looking for a suitable subtitle. It has to be "Now it's dark" from Blue Velvet.

It had to happen... Thread for right-wing conspiracy "theorist" and the Rush Limbaugh of Generation X, Alex Jones. He's looked like 50 or older for a couple years now, but is only 48 years old. Looks like a walking heart attack and is being litigated into bankruptcy. Also, the contents of his phone have accidentally been leaked to the January 6th commission. My nr. 1 candidate for faking his death in the near future.

These diamond shapes are very vagina-coded, or maybe I watched too many Björk videos (go to 1:00):

K-drama actor Song Jae-lim dead from apparent suicide at only 39: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-14072597/song-jae-lim-dies-kdrama-body-home-note-found.html Looks like the K-pop suicides are spreading to the acting world. -
I mean, you can't be punished for a successful suicide.... The article says that if a law were to be passed, the first death would still be 2-3 years away. But I guess only very few people here believe she can make it to 2026.
