Louis Stokes, first black congressman from Ohio and Civil Rights fighter, has lung and brain cancer. Also, he's 90 years old: http://www.cleveland.com/naymik/index.ssf/2015/07/louis_stokes_diagnosed_with_lu.html

Not a bad choice. Why isn't no one mentioning George Martin (Beatles producer)? He's pretty old and pretty high-profile... Every once in a while I check on him, but he seems to be doing ok.

Oh dear, well, I was instantly thinking of suicide, but apparently, it's not the case (for now).

Wow, the second big Krautrock death this year. And again, not someone who was just there, but a major figure. RIP... Edit: Fun fact, Dieter Moebius has an english Wikipedia page, but not a german one. Krautrock was always loved more by the international music scene than at home, with the exception of, maybe, La Düsseldorf. There's almost no overlap between the group of german pop stars famous at home and those famous abroad. Or does any english person know Helene Fischer?

A new interview with DDP favorite, centenarian actor Norman Lloyd: http://www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2015/07/19/meet-hollywood-s-oldest-working-actor.html He's still doing ok, and has a role in the new comedy Trainwreck. Though he also likes to talk about how everything used to be better in the past.

Scientists, Inventors And Techno Wizards

It's strange that they don't mention his age or hardly any other details. Now you made me check. The Telegraph already published a "proper" obit a couple of days ago: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/obituaries/11746921/Nigel-Mackenzie-restaurateur-obituary.html But, the food section, for some reason, decided to write another one. Maybe they were annoyed at the spelling of the name of that pie. -

Nigel Mackenzie, inventor of the banoffee pie, has died: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/foodanddrink/foodanddrinknews/11750703/The-inventor-of-the-banoffee-pie-has-died.html -
Fascinating. And the statistics confirm all the clichés. Smoke-filled jazz clubs lead to lung cancer, and rappers all shoot each other. Well, it's not quite that obvious because the 30,6% of cancer-related deaths in Jazz isn't all that different from the 24,7% in rock, but one can easily construct a fitting narrative. Edit: Also another related article linked from that one, is this one here: https://theconversation.com/the-27-club-is-a-myth-56-is-the-bum-note-for-musicians-33586 It's about the arbitrariness of the 27 Club, and that it would be more logical to make up a "56 Club". But just because the age of 56 is the one when musicians die most often, it still accounts for only 2,3% of all dying musicians, so picking random 56-year old musicians is a worse strategy than picking random U.S. males at age 71 (but better than random U.S. males at 70).

Interesting. He must at 95 1/2 be one of the oldest dwarves alive.I always thought they had a far lesser life expectancy.I think he is the last surviving cast member of the Wizard of Oz now unless I am mistaken.I know he is the last surviving munchkin but not sure about the rest of the cast. Because of Verne Troyer's shenanigans I looked up their life expectancies and indeed, I couldn't see that they were shorter than usual. For example, Margaret Pellegrini died at 89, Karl Slover at 93. -

Andal Ampatuan Sr., a philippine clan leader, sort of a war-lord, has died of advanced liver cancer: http://www.gmanetwork.com/news/story/524370/news/nation/mangudadatu-on-andal-ampatuan-sr-may-he-rest-in-peace I added him to my list just two weeks ago, since they said he had about 3 to 6 months to live. His violence made it to the BBC news a couple of times. Edit: Another example that the Daily Mail simply copies every Reuters news, no matter whether they are relevant to the UK or not: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-3165987/Former-governor-dies-trial-Philippine-journalist-massacre.html

Very sad. I guess the father prepared us for this with the interview last week... I bet Michael Schumacher once told his wife to not let him die, since he was/is a very determined person. They must have discussed what to do in such a situation and I guess Michael thought he could will himself back to life.

Not sure if the translation is correct in the legal sense, but some of the joint plaintiffs aren't satisfied with the verdict and demand more: http://www.spiegel.de/panorama/justiz/auschwitz-prozess-revision-gegen-groening-urteil-a-1044119.html(link in german) Also, Mr. Groening will have to pay the costs of the trail which amount to "several hundreds of thousands of Euros": http://www.ndr.de/nachrichten/niedersachsen/lueneburg_heide_unterelbe/Groening-muss-vermutlich-Hunderttausende-zahlen,auschwitz452.html(link in german) Honestly, he might just decide to end it all right now...
