From comments on Facebook, it seems like he'd been seriously ill for a few years. Someone commented on Reddit saying they'd been on Eggheads a couple of years ago and Dave was ill back then, thought he may have had MS or ALS. I'm surprised he hasn't had an obit on the BBC at all!

I'm sad to hear this. I have a couple of really good friends from Oman from uni and from what I've heard, he really modernised the country and was loved there. Oman is just about the most peaceful country in the region and I hope they can get a new sultan who can keep it on that path.
