    Madchester

Thought I'd start a thread for the musical and cultural phenomenon of Madchester seeing as many of the scene's movers and shakers are now entering their 60's, hoovered up vast amounts of drugs at the time, and are highly obitable. Triggered by watching this video and having a gasp at the state of Mike Pickering (Hacienda DJ, M People) - skip to 4.30. He looks terrible. On the other hand most of New Order look pretty good (although Bernard is now morphing into the old bloke who sits in the same chair in the pub every weekday afternoon nursing a pint of bitter, reading the paper and occasionally reminiscing about his time working for the local bus company).

    Band Aid

I did think about having a crack at this but it's a bit of a herculean task so unlikely it'll progress at my end. If anyone does fancy it then this site is really handy for the inevitable questions along the lines of "who are all those people playing with The Style Council who aren't Talbot, Weller and Dee C Lee?" http://liveaid.free.fr/pages/liveaidtimesdetaileduk.html

    Crashing Companies

One of Britain's biggest double-glazing suppliers has crashed into administration, leaving insolvency practitioners engaged in a race to salvage hundreds of jobs. Sky News has learnt that Everest, which has been owned by the prominent financier Jon Moulton's investment firm Better Capital for more than a decade, called in administrators this week. https://news.sky.com/story/double-glazing-giant-everest-crashes-into-administration-13122865 Responsible for one of the most iconic TV adverts -

    The Booze Business

I couldn't find a thread that deals with alcohol, pubs etc. Sad news for the CAMRA types today: Bessie Davies, the “iconic” publican of the Dyffryn Arms pub in the Gwaun Valley in Pembrokeshire, has died at the age of 93. The Dyffryn Arms, fondly known by locals simply as Bessie’s, has featured in The Good Beer Guide for 40 successive years, despite having no wifi, no television, no bar, and serves “only Bass” through a hatch in the wall. Davies, who worked in the pub before becoming the owner for 73 years, died peacefully on Saturday 16 December and was one of the UK’s longest serving publicans. https://www.thedrinksbusiness.com/2023/12/93-year-old-landlady-whose-welsh-pub-served-only-bass-has-died/

My missus used to go into Body Shop years ago when Roddick was in charge. Fell apart after, shoddy customer service and stopped innovating. Feels like a long time coming.

    Worst pick of 2024 Deathlist?

As a political advisor he was involved in two political scandals, "Lobbygate" in 1998, and again in 2009 while Draper was editor of the LabourList website So an absolute nailed-on. Some of us are old enough to recall the sheer amount of headlines he generated.

    Your DDP Salvage Lot 2024

Made the decision to drop Janey Godley, mainly as she strikes me as an absolutely shameless self-promoter who might well outlive Linda Nolan.

    Worst pick of 2024 Deathlist?

Aside from the handful that are basically recurring on the list for as long as it takes (DvD, Mel Brooks, Prunella Scales, Linda Nolan) regardless of whether it's actually likely they'll go, it looks a pretty solid line-up. Also Draper will easily QO, so a smart pick.

As much as I can't stand WHS, their financials are good at the moment - I'll eat my hat if they go into administration this side of 2030. Check them out - https://www.marketwatch.com/investing/stock/smwh/financials/balance-sheet?countrycode=uk
