I agree with both. Personally I find some overly so, and others not so much, but it's true that's where most peoples focus is. But even though I'm often there for 'our team' I don't need it rammed down my fucking (ah yes, my deal....) throat

I think they're paid per superlative and by the octave. I'm not really a golf fan, but I'd love more of the Peter Alliss or even from cricket Richie Benaud style personally. As you mention above, those yanks are even worse when it's one of their own. Again, I'm not an expert, but yes. A great deal of it is due to what was mentioned above about wind resistance, hence team pursuits being such a thing, but true of all cycle racing in general.

Sort of. I don't know them or their styles as well as you might imagine, but afaik, those three have a sprint finish in them that Kristen Faulkner doesn't. So she had no choice but to go and 'time trial' it. They dithered for a few seconds and yes, blew it between them. Once that was done, there was the usual cat and mouse, and the 3 way photo finish shows they knew each others capabilities.

Overused phrases #1- Goat. Stop that now. Just stop it. Womens cycle road race, which I appreciate I'm probably the only one watching, 14 uses of it in about a minute. GOAT? STFU!

I'll stop swearing when you stop making so many allusions or double entendres to what you'd like to do to any male mentioned.

Minus points for not fucking swearing and it's your swearing thread you fucking started it. Get a bloody grip man.
  9. Don't be, it's not your fault. Any society of 65 million people is bound to have its minority quota of vocal or even in this case violent idiots. Sadly they make the news, the rest of us don't, ever thus.

I could watch all of it, uninterrupted, no ads. But I don't like tennis - worlds like that. Edit: I fucking forgot to swear again. Fuck it.

This is the problem with statistics. It is now my understanding that they only picked the babies that she was being prosecuted for in this chart. However apparently there were other deaths during this period where she was not on duty and these were excluded from that chart and subsequently the trial. I'm no David Spiegelhalter (look him up if you like ) but the argument being put forward on the other hand is that this data was cherry picked to prove the case. It is only a subset of all that was availaible. As merely a member of the general public who likes to believe in our justice system I tend to assume by default that they got it right - after all they know a great deal more and are probably much smarter than I am - But they don't always get it right do they? It's a tricky path to negotiate at times.

Ah well now, I refuse to pay for even that. In fairness I watch very little tv of any kind. And, cough, am not entirely averse to sourcing what i do want to watch, er, elsewhere. So I'm just as tight as you are really (why am I making a competition of this? )

Certainly after that recent expose. I have always been reasonably anti racing, and the Grand National specifically, but even I hadn't gone as far as to consider that riding horses at all might not be a good thing.

Oh I used to be the same, and there's a very large part of me that rails against it still. But in practice, even disregarding the number of channels, my time not watching or even avoiding (by tea or channel swapping or w/e) ads is worth 4 quid. Over the 2 weeks you'd end up watching an hour or more of ads I expect. So I suck up the cost whether I like it or not, I like the ads and lack of choice even less. Also I don't have eurosport tv, which I assume you are already paying for.

Isn't this true in general though? By which I mean 'everyone' is largely guided by what is reported by the media and the guilty decision in the court. Until we have some reason to doubt a verdict and the post verdict increase in information we simply don't have access to the data to make even a vaguely informed decision? I had no reason to doubt Letby's guilt until I was pointed to an article published by an American source, and even then I had to use a vpn to access it (because due to the second trial it was banned by the court this side of the pond I believe). Sure, as is turning out in the Southport (and now other areas) riots, more recently there's social media but that's proving somewhat unreliable at best (and the riots probably increased in veracity by folks who wanna riot for any reason to push their agenda, even though they know it's false).

It does. Though I believe @harrymcnallysblueandwhitearmy was watching on tv Eurosport which only has the 2 channels as far as I know so watching uninterrupted might not be possible. In fact, if I watch one of those via the web interface, it does have ads, I have to find the dedicated to that sport one that doesn't. So again (earlier discussions notwithstanding) might be worth the 4 quid.

Wind resistance increases with the square of speed - so fast as an olympic runner is they're only meeting about 1/4 the air resistance of cyclists that are roughly twice as fast. (not counting factors like position and overall surface area). But agreed, it's not nothing and was experimented with yoinks ago by notably flo-jo and I also apparently after a brief search, Cathy Freeman in 2000.

I quite like Gaia's - Freed from Desire but bloody stop playing it at every sporting event endlessly. I'll end up detesting it as much as Sweet Caroline and for the same reason.

You can blame me for that one too. I'm always doing it. In my defence it's normally brought up by something that was mentioned that was origially on topic but drifted. Still.... I don't have an issue with all the things you say about the BBC it does all of those things and more probably. It's definitely value for money if you use it, not denying that, never have. Its funding however is a huge issue going forward because of Sky, youtube, netflix, apple tv, social media etc etc. Many of those from generations even younger than yourself honestly don't watch it at all I'm led to believe. The funding has to come from somewhere, and it'll have to get sorted at some point the problem is the licence fee is an utterly outdated model in the current world. I do have an issue with paying for something you don't use. It's like paying Sainsbury's even though you only shop at Lidl. If you only watch commercial broadcasts that you already pay for separately why should the BBC get a cut? It's plain wrong. I don't understand how they got the 'any broadcast tv from any source' under the wire but they shouldn't have. TLDR: (again, I'm overusing this) Pay the licence to use the BBC and Iplayer sure but not output that has nothing whatsoever to do with the BBC it's unjust however good the value the BBC provides may be.

Oh as do I. I don't like the 'privatisation' of many things. Access to sport on tv is just one more. To some degree it's even possible I miss it more that you do because I'm older than you to the point where there wasn't anything more than BBC v ITV and that was it. The licence fee is payable if...(off the top of my head I'm not going to look up the legal definition) 1 You watch the BBC 2 You watch BBC Iplayer (this is only since, hm, 2016? 2018? something like that) 3 You watch any other broadcast tv - This is the one, you can't even watch ITV 'live' without a licence, nor anything else even if the show is pre-recorded. So by definition any live sport is 'live' on any channel. Therefore you must have a licence. 3 In practice means you can be prosecuted for watching any damn thing that is defined as 'broadcast live' whether its on the BBC or not. And it's the 'not' I think is utterly ludicrous. Does that help?

I didn't say I liked it. In fact I said And perhaps that's badly worded, I'm still not a supporter of it. But I'm a realist, we haven't had any premiership football for free since forever (again, as you know not entirely my thing, but that's not the point). Would I prefer it were it all on Iplayer free (licence notwithstanding) to all? Sure I would, but it isn't. And for once I'm not having to pay £80 a month or whatever it is that sky costs now. TLDR: I don't like it. But we are where we are with all this and for now £4 is less than a pint most places and I can live with it. On entirely another note, why do we have to pay the licence fee to the BBC to watch things that aren't even on the BBC just because they're live? That's ludicrous. I support the idea of a public broadcaster but the BBC isn't immune to critiscism (from me at any rate).
