Probably not for his family, you asshole. Not that I particularly think he was a saint - divorcing his wife at 65, remarrying and, as the DDP points out, having a daughter younger than her niece. Nothing to particularly warrant me wishing for his death and being happy about it though. Though I am in line for DDP and HDP points, so maybe I'll just shut up, but coming from your distorted perception of reality, comments like those seem much worse than they probably are.

Fred Thompson - Possible U.S. presidential candidate with "mild" lymphoma. Decision to go on the campaign trail will be partially based on his health. He's running for president, so I'll probably take him off the list as well, if no one objects.

A spot has been freed up, for the first time in ages too... must get to cleaning that out... And since I've posted wayyyy too much today, I'll note in this post that I've opted to put awards on individual team pages instead of having a Hall of Champions - part of the KISS principle. Anyhow, if anyone can think of ideas for awards, send me an email (don't post it here) and I'll consider it. I can colour the Order of Canada ribbon plenty of different colours with my copy of Paint and Photoshop... I had one idea, but I figured that it would be redundant... so I'm open to new ideas.

Here's a news article. According to the World's Oldest People Yahoo board, the gist that I get is that they haven't been able to contact the family to even begin the process of confirmation.

He doesn't have any medical condition, however he lost both parents through carbon monoxide poisoning last year which would make anyone depressed. Dodgy CP, very dodgy. For starters the man obviously has an ego the size of the Graf Zeppellin or he wouldn't do what he does. Secondly depression in a bloke pushing fifty is debilitating but not necessarily fatal. Patrick Duffy survived the brutal murder of his parents. I mean, he wasn't there, obviously, but he was told about it years ago, and he can still summon a smile when they interview him on telly every once in a while. I'll be amongst the first to congratulate you on WAY points, and I admire the bravery of the pick, but it's a long-shot. Err... that wasn't my reasoning at all. See the above post.

He doesn't have any medical condition, however he lost both parents through carbon monoxide poisoning last year which would make anyone depressed. Three years ago actually, and he says his music cheers him up. I picked him partially because I wanted someone completely random (worked for Max Roach and Kiichi Miyazawa, though granted the former was known to be in ill health) and partially because I saw him in concert over the summer and he just doesn't seem like Weird Al anymore. Great show, don't get me wrong, but it felt like someone doing a really great impression of Weird Al - not Weird Al himself.

Is there any chance at all that we could keep this thread on topic and not fill it up with pointless garbage? I hate to sound like Star Crossed, but this is really clogging up the thread. I fully admit and apologize for my own contribution to the mess earlier, but this thread is getting filled up with irrelevant trash.

With all due respects to Canadian Paul: 1) The DDP is on a much larger scale than the CPDP. The DDP entered about 500 teams this year - CP didn't get 50. 2) If Canadian Paul's timetable is anything like mine, he is still on holiday (only just). It would, therefore benefit him to get this out of the way before his studies start. The DDP organisers have jobs. 3) What exactly is it you are after, Banshees? Thank you Windsor, both 1) and 2) are correct (though school and especially the time-sucking nexus that is Arabic has begun for me now ). Also important: the CPDP isn't technically "together" yet, since only 2 of the 300 odd candidates (Tomlinson and Yankovic) are online and the moment, and likely it will be a long time before they are (see #2). The DDP got the profiles of over 1,000 candidates up in about a month's time - I'll be lucky if I get my 300 up in that time. Also, the Canadian rule is something to make my pool a little different (aside from the theme team thing) and perhaps a little more challenging. It'd be a bit of a waste if it weren't there.

Wilson doing well sez friend.

For those of you actually interested in, you know, the topic of this thread, a 94 year-old has become the world's oldest recipient of a Master's Degree.

Indeed, well done. Site updated to reflect the death of Jane Tomlinson, which, of course, puts Stabby in first place in the Ordinary Team category and the rest of us in second. Given that she was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in the most recent honours list, you could argue that it is quite a big miss for my theme team. For some strage reason, I didn't even consider her. You didn't consider her because - and I don't mean to speak ill of the dead in this remark (even though I guess I am) - she was C-list and, in spirit at least, CP's deadpool is celebrating A-list departures. She was the equivalent of a walk on part in Coronation Street. That aside, it seems she wasn't fooling us even if she did stretch the meaning of "imminent" in the longest goodbye since Lester Piggot's retirement. She did some good too so I'm not snearing at her efforts, just musing on fame etc. I admittedly did toy with the idea of docking a point for famous for being famous... it was sort of a borderline case... I ended up deciding that she had fame by my technical definition... perhaps not in the spirit though. I also thought, would I dock Terry Fox for being famous for being famous? Not a chance.

Done. Also done: the Hall of Scores. Marvel at being in a 23-way tie for first place, daydream about last year's scores and hits or ignore completely.

No vets have died since July 24 - in fact we're actually up one thanks to Yakup Satar. Most (but not all) of them have been recently confirmed to be alive as well. Recent news, however, is not as encouraging. Allingham is greatly slowing down and becoming unable to maneuver. An update on J. Russell Coffey by a visitor claims that Coffey is unlikely to survive another year to his 110th birthday. The family of Justin Tuveri is hoping that he will pass away soon, as he is supposedly weak, sick and in incredible pain.

That's bollocks, that is. How can every situation only have one outcome? Situation one - there is a donut on my desk. Possible outcomes 1 - I could eat it. 2 - I could not eat it. 3 - I could throw it out of my window. 4 - I could use it as a pin cushion. 5 - I could use it as a bracelet. 6 - Are you getting my drift? Apologies if I have missed something deep and meaningful here. Yes, but no matter what you do, the universe eventually ends. Therefore, whatever you do with it, existence eventually ends, so there is only one outcome. Maybe that's what he's getting at, short term vs. long term? It may be good logic too - you don't have to worry about the ill-effects of eating the donut since, no mater what, the universe will end. Hell, forget the universe. You will die (eventually), that is the single outcome no matter what you do with the donut. I'm not saying I subscribe to this mode of thinking, just my guess as what our new member is getting at.

Get that one listed for the monkeys NOW!!!! No way, too intentional. It shouldn't have even been dignified with acknowledgment.
-
Well here's one that would have sufficed for the CPDP. At least they're out in English now.

The Hall of Ghosts is now up. Mostly present for historical purposes, bored and nostalgic people can browse old picks, past hits and retired players. The relevant profiles have been updated as well. Mono: I'll get to your name thing soon, when I feel like updating all the team pages.

In the order they were received: To Die For: You can send a working email to cpdp2006 at gmail dot com (the same place you sent your picks) and I'll add you to the mailing list. Windsor: OK, that's what I figured re: Haig, I just wasn't sure. And I feel you on the email thing. Handy: Godot submitted 10 candidates, but one was deceased and he hasn't replied with a replacement. I figure he's not the type to steal someone else's good pick and I didn't want to delay the whole site because of him, so I put it up with the nine for now, though he's rapidly running out of time to find a replacement. DttG: Hmm... I had always thought that those were three separate articles (as in, the not so had nothing to do with gifted and black), but the "but" would clarify it, so I'll fix it up right away. I appreciate the appreciation, although don't hold your breath on the Hall of Candidates. I'll probably be doing those very slowly, not that it makes much of a difference for the pool itself. I'm thinking they'll all be up sometime around Christmas. I have got all the pictures though.

Sir John Compton's health has worsened and he is now in intensive care. Might be a unique hit for Windsor on the CPDP coming up... Meanwhile, had I been paying attention, I might have caught that former Utah governor Calvin Rampton, is not only terminally ill with cancer, but also suffered a stroke recently. Easy CNN obit, would have made a great CPDP pick.

The Hall of Teams is up for your general perusal, other Halls to follow. Also, all of the new entrants (except for To Die For, who it won't let me send an email to!) should be on the email list, so if you didn't get the first email and you're not Windsor or To Die For, please let me know so I can take care of it!

Are we supposed to work out the theme or something? They are all 90 years old. I think. The name of that particular Theme Team is Born in 1917, Dead in 2007?
-
Well unless someone turns up dead, it looks as if we have our winners for the CPDP: In the Ordinary Team category, we have f**k f**k Fuckety f**k f**k as winner with an impressive seven hits: Julie Winnefred Bertrand, Allen Carr, Ross Davidson, Freddy Fender, George Melly, Tammy Faye Messner and Ferenc Puskas In the Theme Team category, we have Old and in the Way as winner with five hits: Brooke Astor, Henry Beachell, Julie Winnefred Bertrand, Elizabeth Bolden and Emiliano Mercado del Toro. Congratulations to the winners! For 2007-2008, four teams went into retirement: Boys and Girls Come out to Play, f**k f**k Fuckety f**k f**k, Team Get f**ked Please and The Tim O'Tays. To replace them, we have seven new teams: Can-I-Die?, End of the world as we know it, Godot's Last Minuters, Raven's Flock, The Carking Lot, The Professional and To Die For. A hearty welcome to them and an equally hearty welcome back to all of our returning teams! So here's the plan. By the end of the day (my day, anyways) I should have the new teams with all of their selections up. Next I'll do the Hall of Scores, followed by the Hall of Ghosts and then the Hall of Champions. Once that is all done, I will slowly begin putting up all the candidate pages. Finally, on the highly off chance that one of my own candidates dies before I get the teams up today, here's my list so that no one thinks I've cheated: Regular Team: James Coyne, Donald Crowdis, Milt Dunnell, Tyrone Jones, Evel Knievel, Jack Ramsay, Dufferin Robelin, Robert G. Robertson, Joe Weider, Weird Al Yankovic Theme Team, Canadian Hockey Players Over 80: Emile Bouchard, Johnny Bower, Ray Getliffe, Ted Kennedy (the hockey player), Ken Reardon, Milt Schmidt, Clint Smith, Gaye Stewart

This thread is for ideas and possibilities and that's all they were. I'm not saying they should be picked so no need to be so aresy. I'm sure it was mentioned on News at Ten when one of the Kendal twins died so it does happen. Anyway your post reminds me, no-one did get back to me on wheteher conjoined twins should be one pick or two. I'm not sure about this, but don't they usually die around the same time (I know Cheng and Eng did, I'm not sure if that was just a coincidence or if there's a biological reason for it)? If that were the general case, I'd say one, because there's no chance for one not to die when the other does. If one can survive (depending on what organs are shared), then I'd say it could count as two because there's a chance that one could survive the year when the other does not. I think you'd have to do it on a case-by-case basis, until more information could be obtained.

Either someone's taking their fetish to the extreme, or they've got too much time on their hands, or both. Lady G, scsi, Windsor, DttG and SttG: I have received all of your entries. If there are any problems or ambiguities, I'll let you know by private message. W, since you entered by personal message, in as much as my full inbox would allowed, I'll keep you off the mailing list this year again if you'd like (since I post changes on DL anyways). My department's happy hour is tonight (though I have a nagging suspicion that it will neither be happy nor an hour), but then I have to stay at home until the evening tomorrow to wait for a package, so the plan is to have the Halls of Teams and Ghosts up tomorrow, followed by the Halls of Scores and Champions soon after, and finally the Hall of Candidates when I get around to it.
