Things To Do While Waiting For Death

Get yourself organised. Nice idea for a branded Deathlist sticker we could send to all the annual candidates.

Meanwhile auditions for next year's list get underway. I'd like to know the name of that paraglider.

If Brinsworth were to open a Twitter account and tweet the various comings and goings it could save us a lot of trouble.

Yes, odd that, a rare mistake by the admins. I remember some admonishment of Hackenslash, but not sure what for. Not much discussion any more of Brinsworth House either. I noticed the other day while looking up Charlie Drake that he died in Twickenham. Brinsworth? I can't remember whether he was a resident. I suppose it was all discussed at the time.

Remember when this was the DL's most popular thread? It still is if you look at the figures - all, if I recall it right, as a result of MPFC urging that it be kept in the limelight. It became a bit controversial at one point but I forget why. It certainly led to much fever around Brinsworth House and the Pooka's sojourn in the tree. It's made me wonder - do we have a best/worst of the deathlist thread? Or a deathlist nostalgia thread? I remember a while back when NAP and a few others were on about the good old days. It would be good to have some links to some of our favourite exchanges.

I'd put a few women ahead of Madonna, including our own Queen Liz. Aung San Suu Kyi, Oprah Winfrey and Germaine Greer come to mind although it's a thin list when you try to think of women who have really made a difference enough to be remembered in the history books web pages.

I don't remember Churchill's death, but that Real Weather happened in my first winter, one that's the stuff of . Ford Prefect is, for me, a character in THGttG. Me dad drove a white Ford Taunus 12-M. We didn't have TV till 1969, when a set was bought to watch the Apollo 11 mission. The first film I remember watching in the cinema was Jungle Book. My first real hero was Floris. regards, Hein You didn't see many Ford Taunuses around our way. In some ways I wish we hadn't had a telly. It was on all the time after my dad came home from work. The first stuff I remember on telly was Watch with Mother and I'd count as a formative influence. Working out what they were saying was a big help many years later in understanding those Banshee Scream posts on the DL.

I can remember Churchill when he was alive and I can tell you he was as revered in life as he has been since his death (except in South Wales). Your argument, if it's worthy of the name, is plain daft. People don't become important because they have died although death does allow historians the perspective of distance when assessing a life that has been completed. Are you saying that Bardot is not remembered as an actress because she isn't dead yet or that Castro's place in history is not secure? Are you saying that Gorbachev's role in ending the Cold War is insignificant? Or that Mandela's role in ending apartheid is trivial? Or that the discovery of DNA or the development of the worldwide web that allows you to post such nonsense is nothing out of the ordinary? Get a grip Steve. After six years of hibernation I would have hoped for something better than this. I didn't know you were that old, Godot... He can remember Chamberlain waving his bit of paper too... No call for that. I'm not Dad's Deathlister, not while Clive Dunn's alive.

I was running around in short pants and had snot on my top lip but I remember his funeral and I still have my Winston Churchill commemorative crown. A friend of mine met him and said he had a real presence. Oh aye in them days the Blue Peter boat was a real one sailing on the sea and In fact that's where I learned to dance techno , still do. We had back then and didn't worry too much about leaves on the line. Our first car was a and the first film I remember seeing at the pictures was Petticoat Pirates staring Charlie Drake who never made it as a pop singer. Even at that tender age I could see that the film was shite.

The Queen is an interesting choice RA. I'd always assumed that she did no more than put her name to agreements that had already been thrashed out by politicians. But she will certainly be remembered. The problem is that kings and queens get a head start in the history books since they have to get a mention. But usually its just as a signpost as in "in the reign of Queen Elizabeth II." I wanted to include a musician but I'm wondering if I should have gone for Dylan rather than number two in the writing duo that was Lennon and McCartney. If enough people contribute a list here it would be interesting to aggregate the choices for a definitive list. Not sure how many lists there would need to be for this to be statistically interesting. I'm sure RA can tell us.

    Is The Deathlist Dying?

You do wonder whether this continual ineptness is deliberate... I used to be (still am) actually on a message board where one of the sub-forums was dedicated to this massive, large-scale trolling operation that involved a group of maybe 10, 15 users each setting up four or five fake Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, whatever accounts to create the impression that there was this 50-strong community of people who already existed, then they'd slowly drag actual real people into their imaginary world and start fucking with them. Getting them to fall in love with people who don't exist, wire money for problems that nobody has, start fights with their actual irl friends, and so on and so forth. There's actually a vaguely notable piece of Facebook "FAIL" internet virality that's actually one of their pieces of trolling. TL;DR - I know some guys whose dedication to trolling sees them spend maybe 20 hours a week talking to strangers and flipping between a variety of fake online personae all for the purpose of "lulz." And even they aren't as dedicated to this level of high-tier trolling as notaguest. He/she/it is the DL's Japanese knotweed/Leylandii/grey squirrel, slowly strangling a tiny, delicate ecosystem. It's all rather depressing. The likes of honez, CR, BS, CP, ATJ, STTG, DTTG, CO, FF, BB, Josco, Mono, DWB, Pooka, Bou, GR, TH, HoS, Gunjaman, SC, Millwall32 and IE+ may not have all vanished specifically on notaguest's account in the past year or so, but it's surely symptomatic of the sad decline. Sorry for whingeing, it's only a website, I know. Only a website yes Harry, but a pretty good one, or it was, and mostly due to the contributions of some sparkling posters who have bowed out or pass by infrequently these days. Places like this always need new blood but too much of the new stuff is a bit thin and lifeless and it's not just Notaguest who I agree does seem to be attention seeking rather like Glasgow David and his strange goose-shooting story which I'm sure was utter bollocks but it was fun to play along with him until it wasn't. I wonder if part of the problem is all the competition around these days - Facebook, online games, YouTube, Twitter etc. None of this stuff used to exist.

    Seen Any Good Films Lately?

Just seen Super 8, real 70s nostalgia feel, pretty predictable plot but the the film has a great look to it. Only second night of release round our way and cinema was almost empty.

    Dead Pop Stars

Takes me back a bit. I remember buying Alpha Centuri, then Phaedra after hearing it on John Peel's show and thinking it was far out, or something (how southerners say "summat" MPFC). All my mates thought it was shit. Listening again now, I'm thinking they were right.

    A Joke

Enough jokes in to keep MPFC going for, ooo, a day or two maybe. Like this: "I went to the zoo to watch the monkeys wanking. Then I went to watch the crocodiles, and I was still wanking." Also: Oedipus - what a motherfucker!
