Today in 1945, less than three weeks before the liberation of Holland, resistance fighter[1] Hannie Schaft was executed by the Nazis at the age of 24. [1] Or terrorist, depending on your point of view. regards, Hein

Jessica Watson got in some choppy weather and ripped her mainsail. The damage doesn't seem too serious, so she may well end her trip successfully and safely, but there's some poetry in the idea that she might have to abandon ship while her port of call is in sight, so to speak. regards, Hein -

I think that you should withhold the points at this time.If a date is provided, and shows that he did indeed die in 2010, then by all means award the points at the later date. Until such time as a solid date is provided, no points should be awarded. It is the case that all teams put him in their teams in 'good faith', but that shouldn't really matter. These teams have fallen fowl of the rules by putting forward a candidate for a celebrity dead pool who was not a celebrity. You may now proceed in tearing my argument to shreds. Well, since you offered Windsor. A quick perusal of the rules would make it clear the aim of this deadpool is to be swift and, erm, deadly. This ISN'T strictly a celebrity deadpool and fleeting mentions in online news sources will suffice for points, so we set a precedent last year for awarding points where DDP rules didn't do the same. Appreciate the impartial opinion, mind. But how do we now get round the teams without a sub simply nominating a gravely ill person who'll die this week? Indeed, those who chose Hewlett are now at a disadvantage, but thus are the pitfalls of competative deadpooling. Personally, I wouldn't enact the subs at all. Just a bit of bad luck. I'm sure that the teams will get over it. I'm with Windsor here. Of course, I'm not impartial, even though my chances of a win are remote either way[1]. I appreciate that disallowing the late Mr Hewlett, on grounds of a litteral interpretation of the rules alone, hints of droid nature, something I hate. On the other hand, one may ask whether this case, while there's doubt about when he exactly died, is reason enough to bend the rules. [1] BTW, please excuse the newbie question, I can't be arsed to search the board: what happens if during the year no team reaches 2010 points? regards, Hein

Went to see Ultravox last night, so guilty as charged I guess. They were terrific, but it was a little sobering to see how we all look now. We were all so beautiful in the 80s 'Time goes, time goes by too soon' - indeed. C'est la, eh, vie, Anna. regards, Hein -

An 84 year old with Alzhiemer's will lead us out of recession? There is, of course, little reason to expect that an 84 year old with Alzheimer's will do worse than the incumbent idiots politicians. After all, their memories are about as long. That said, I can imagine that there are 84 year olds with Alzheimer's to be found who are less dangerous than Baroness Thatcher. regards, Hein

Charlton Heston has many close encounters of the liquid kind in Planet of the Ales. Drew Barrymore learns what ethanol does for your sex life in Never Been Pissed. Demonstrations turn to riots in Washington State when Dutch courage hits in Bottle in Seattle. Mickey Rourke tries to explain himself after he had a few drinks and a puke in Barf Lie. regards, Hein

Could you provide a newsarticle? I couldn't find an English language source, but here is a link to Dutch news site nu.nl. While we're at it, another Dutch celeb carked it: Sugar Lee Hooper, remarkable mostly through her unusual hair style. regards, Hein

Yes, race is mostly a social construct. If skin colour and a few other very visible and difficult to hide properties weren't so different in humans we would probably never have invented race. Mind, there wouldn't be any lack of bigotry, prejudice and discrimination, but it would occur along other social lines, as it does now: religion, language, education, property and class. The properties that we normally define as racial are skin deep. Other properties correlate to some degree with those superficial ones, but that doesn't mean much, as correlation isn't the came as causation. About the genetic differences among people: genetically we're a remarkably homogeneous lot. From the usually reliable source I Read It Somewhere I seem to remember that more than 80% of all human genetic variation can be found in any single group of people, anywhere on Earth. Ah, found a link: Wikipedia article on Human genetic variation. See paragraph headed: Distribution of variation. I can also recommend an article by Stephen Jay Gould: Human Equality Is a Contingent Fact of History. It's online at http://www.sjgarchive.org/library/text/b16/p0425.htm and further, if you're willing to stick in the page numbers in the location bar. regards, Hein

That took remarkably long. Here's a pic of Eugene before the flag of his Afrikaner Weerstandsbeweging: Any resemblance to the Nazi flag is no coincidence. Was it a "blick" who murdered him? Anyway, good riddance. Could well be. According to this news 24 article, police found a panga and knobkerrie (a machette and a club) next to Terre'Blanche. As such that doesn't mean much, I suppose even a retarded Boer can use these ethnic weapons, but combine it with the suggestion that he was killed over unpaid wages and a theory suggests itself. regards, Hein

No - can't get this to work - are you sure it's a valid sudoku - or are you trying to waste too much of my time? Won't look at it again till you post the answer - you darn ba*****d! An online sudoku solver reports: This was an announcement from Deathlist's Spoilsport Department. regards, Hein
