    The Dutch

After a long and agonising illness, but still unexpectedly, the Dutch government died last night. With a bit of luck this'll be the last we hear of this dweeb: The next few months and polls will be interesting, with neo-fascist populist Wilders expected to take some 20% of the vote. regards, Hein

    Golf: The 19th Hole

That's true for all, or at least most, people who express regret for some wrong they did. I'm rather surprised about all this brouhaha. He's doing what most men dream of doing if they had his fortune. regards, Hein

    Quiz Time

7 out of 9. I got the US state question wrong, which didn't surprise me a bit, and the drowning/falling one, which did. regards, Hein (non-USAian and proud)

Not exactly a hotel, but certainly premises where rooms are rented for short periods: Jean Cardinal Daniélou died in a Paris brothel in 1974. regards, Hein

    Is Cryogenics A Choice

Interesting points, there. It's all rather philosophical to me, but still a few things escape me. How exactly will cloning contribute to withstand death? It's not the case that a clone is a carbon copy of the original. It's more like a newly born identical twin, another person in all accepted meanings. I'm also not quite sure freezing my body will conquer death. Even if someone in the future would be daft enough to revive it and be able to repair the malfunctioning bits, that surely wouldn't mean I'd live forever, would it? regards, Hein

    Ideas And Possibilities For 2011

Rumours abound that actor Alec Baldwin has been rushed to hospital. From the article we also learn that he has a daughter called Ireland. Naming your daughter after a car brand may be silly, but this is incomprehensible. What's next? May I introduce you to my daugther, People's Republic of China? regards, Hein

    Is Cryogenics A Choice

Spend it on a world map, like I just did. Always wanted one of these, and I've just ordered one. It's huge, about 6ft x 3ft, but it'll enable me to exercise my fantasies of global domination penchant for mapping the world's renewable energy industry in a nice visual way. I see they're markable and washable. That's very useful when you plan your invasions solar array roll-out campaigns. Don't use permanent markers, though, they ruin the map. regards, Hein

African Leaders - Despots and Democratic

Oooh, an African dictator who tried to slip under our radar: apparently former Central African Republic president Andre Kolingba died a few days ago. I seem to remember we had a separate topic for African dictators, somewhere, but I couldn't find it. Forget my head next. regards, Hein

I snipped the quote cascade and will add my two Euro-cents. First: the facts. TMB is the boss, dictator or beloved leader, whichever word you fancy, of DDP. He can do there what he fucking likes. TMB does what he fucking likes in his own spare time for no monetary reward. The only things he gets from it are our undying admiration and lots of complaints and some abuse. As the linked-to Wikipedia article about Godwin's Law makes clear, invoking the Law as some kind of argument is frowned upon and often considered as equally thread-ending as invoking the Nazi's as an argument. My opinions. Guest's remarks, especially the invasion one, were uncalled for. TMB's response was, while understandable, not very wise. I don't particularly like this kind of pissing contest on our little forum. As a final word, or rather picture, here's my advice: regards, Hein

I mean No. No. Yes?Probably.Definitely maybe.I find that hard to comprehend! It wasn't me. I deny all knowledge. There must be some kind of mistake. regards, Hein

IANA physician and that medical jargon doesn't mean much to me, so take the following with the obligatory grain of NaCl. If our hero needs dialysis daily, it means that his kidneys don't do enough work, if anything at all. It seems to me those two transplants didn't do much good, whether the second transplant replaced the first one or the second original kidney. Anti-rejection drugs generally work by suppressing the immune system. This implies that the patient becomes more vulnerable to microbial and viral infections. As a result he may become ill from infections that in healthy people cause no or few symptoms. he also is more likely to die from more serious infections. To make matters worse, dialysis can be a pathway into the body for such infections. That said, while his quality of life is diminished, such a regime can keep him alive for a long time. regards, Hein
