Happy birthday, Han. regards, Hein -
Ehrm, it seems to me there's something iffy about the mathematics of the two parts of that statement. regards, Hein

We're clutching at straws, aren't we? Every day several thousands of Dutch die, none of them famous, domestically or overseas. I can think of several well-known ones I'd rather see dead, but they stick to life like a limpet. regards, Hein

Which translates roughly to: The lonesome black boat floats in the dead of night through a darkness, wild and big, towards death, death Interestingly, Marsman died in 1940 when the ship in which he fled to England was torpedoed by the Gerries. What a strange coincidence. regards, Hein

Why? He is Brazilian and Rio de Janeiro got the games. He should be happy! Maybe he suffers a joyfull heart attack? I think it was this Juan who MH must have seen on the TV the other day supporting Madrid's bid. Taxi! Yup, that's the one. John, Jan, Juan, Joaoaoao, what's the difference.... regards, Hein

Havelange got my vote. Now that Madrid didn't get the Olympic Games for Madrid he may just as well cark it. regards, Hein

I use a password manager to remember my passwords, but I'm not typing this from my normal computer. To make things worse, my password is a generated one, so quite difficult to remember. I had to write it down on a slip of paper to get this going. Anyway, thanks for the welcome back, y'all. I intend to be around more, but my internet access is a bit unreliable, so don't get confused if I'm not logging on every day. regards, Hein

Let me be the first to congratulate Deathlist.net forum with its 10,000th message. Regards, Hein

There's a much simpler solution to that: a pair of scissors applied to the headphone leads. regards, Hein

Of course we can, but will we? regards, Hein

Slurred speach is quite a normal result after a stroke, it's often the first diagnostic. In my dad it was, although the same happened after a few drinks, i.e. every day. He had his first stroke at 50 and lived another ten years. Good. regards, Hein

I'm not quite sure that's the only reason such names were given. In my country feminised versions of male names used to be quite normal and haven't gone completely, though they're rarely actually used. Wilhelmina may ring a bell in an international audience and there are still lots of Johannas, Hendrikas and Antonias around. My mother's names beside Anna were Jacoba and Arnolda. regards, Hendrikus

No, that's Dutch 'of', which translates to English 'or'. It's a family name from the Twente area of the Netherlands, where double-barreled family names aren't unusual. In this case it's a result of an intermarriage of two families in which they couldn't choose one name, so they kept both. English 'of' translates to Dutch 'van', as in Van Nistelrooy. regards, Hein

But a strong leader can change the entire direction of a country (for both good and bad). Let's say for the sake of argument Gandhi and Thatcher (mainly good), Hitler and Stalin (bad). I won't dispute that, but without the cooperation of many it won't happen. Apart from that: it's much easier to lead a nation to ruin than to success. Now that I think of it: it's also not quite clear what exactly constitutes failure or success in this respect. The utter ruin of Germany in 1945 proved to be the start of a magnificent recovery. From a 2007 perspective there are arguments for the statement that WWII was actually won by Germany and Japan. I hold no particular view on the union issue, although at the time I did. The outcome did, however, depend highly on bad strategy from the union leaders. If they had paid attention to history they would have known that a general strike is not the way to fight such a struggle. regards, Hein

It doesn't? Quick! Change my name to Luxembourg Paul! Or Canadian Paula! Either way, I could use a change for a bit. How about Paula Luxemburg? Almost as good as Rosa. There's more to my joke than meets the eye. In 1971 Dutch chess master Hans Ree tied for first place with then world champion Boris Spassky in the Canadian Open played in Vancouver. My namesake Hein Donner, who didn't particularly like Ree, wrote an article about it, titled Does Canada exist?. regards, Hein

Could be worse. Canada never existed. regards, Hein
