I read in the paper that Pharaoh Ramesses II of Egypt isn´t feeling well. He may well live another few decades, but I think he´s well worth a punt. regards, Hein

And some random comments on those observations: That's a problem with politicians in all democracies: they won't look beyond the end of the week or the next election, whichever is first. Politicians in dictatorships don't have that problem, so they won't look beyond the end of the week. Same here. The nasty extra is that we pay for US protection against unknown enemies. That's protection as in protection racket, mind. regards, Hein

I've never understood why in America they hand out the death penalty, and then let people languish on death row for years if not decades I suppose it's meant to reflect the human condition: condemned to death at birth, we all serve life. regards, Hein

As Stephen Jay Gould wrote: The center of human nature is rooted in ten thousand ordinary acts of kindness that define our days.1 It's good to learn that some of all who do that also live long. May the memory of Mr Fletcher live even longer. 1 Gould Stephen J., "Ten Thousand Acts of Kindness," Natural History, 1988, p. 14 regards, Hein

Today I had a 15 minute bike ride through town. It started in sunshine, then I got into a hail storm, followed by heavy rain. When I arrived at my destination (soaking wet, of course) the sun was shining again. All this at a balmy 9 degrees C. According to the Dutch Met Office KNMI this was the coldest 23rd of May since it started records in 1901. May 2013 may well become the coldest May since 1962, the coldest on record. Where´s global warming when you need it? regards, Hein

More precisely: he shot himself next to the main altar of Notre Dame cathedral. An attention seeking prat right to the end. Good riddance. I'd never heard of him until yesterday. Did he have a high profile over there? I read where Marine Le Pen was carrying on about what a great martyr he was. High profile: in France perhaps, but in my nick of the woods: no. I seem to remember his name from a rant an article by a French historian a few years ago, in which several intellectual fellow travellers of Jean-Marie Le Pen were dissed criticised. regards, Hein
