  1. Robert Altman, aged 81, revealed at the Oscars on Sunday night that he'd had a heart transplant 10 years ago.

Is his lifetime achievment a sign of his impending demise?

Mmmm.. I don't know. He looks okay & he's active but...

What I did though was check how long people lived after winning a lifetime achievement Academy Award:

A long time: (over 15 years)

Sophia Loren & Walter Lantz 15 years

    Cary Grant 16 years

    Harold Lloyd 18 years

    Yakima Canutt 19 years

Paul Newman & Alec Guinness 20 years

Lillian Gish & Mack Sennett 22 years

    Mickey Rooney 23 years

    Margaret Booth 24 years

    Adolph Zukor 27 years

    Greta Garbo 35 years

    Bob Hope 50 years

Not that long (under 3 years)

    Satyajit Ray - 1 month

    Federico Fellini - 6 months

Henry Fonda, Sid Grauman & Lee De Forest - 1 year

Myrna Loy & Howard Hawks - 2 years

    Posthumous Awards

Edward G. Robinson, Gary Cooper, Douglas Fairbanks

    Honorary Winners still alive

Poitier, Redford, O'Toole, Edwards, Lumet, Altman Wadja, Cardiff, Kidd, Donen, Douglas, Antonioli, Loren, Newman, Rooney

    Average

About 7-12 years after an award.

  2. Character actor Colin Jeavons (b.1929).

According to imdb, he hasn't been on TV since 1993.

    Must be ill...

Well according to an appreciation site from 2005, he retired from acting in 1996 & lives happily in retirement with his wife in Surrey. He still signs any fan mail forwarded from his agent.

    Sounds okay to me....

  3. I missed this one out earlier this week.

your link apopears to lead to the liberal democrat party site...are you saying Charles Kennedy has killed himself?

I was about to delve into Windsor's subconcious & say that I think this was an ironic posting on the death of the Liberal Democrats but I need no longer go there. :o

  4. Yuje Ide; 2nd driver in the Super Aguri team makes his first F1 start He's one of the most inept and inexperienced drivers to see F1 action in recent years.

Just thought I'd, like, bring it to your attention.

Have you based that on a broadsheet guide to the new season?

Ide has been racing for over ten years in Formula Nippon, Japanese F3, GT's - he's an extremely experienced driver who I would hardly call inept - he's won races, which is more than Jenson Button has ever done.

The broadsheets have been jingoistically praising Button, who so far as been the biggest underachiever since Eddie "undera"Cheever & have done no research on Ide at all, because "he's bound to be slow & he's a Jap"

I consider Ralf Schumacher to be a bigger threat to himself & others than anyone on that grid.

  5. Actor Frankie Muniz, famous for Malcolm & The Middle & My Dog Skip has quit acting & has started a career as a racing driver. He'll be in Formula BMW this year, CART Toyota Atlantic next year (that's the plan anyway) in the hope that he'll drive in CART.

Following Jack Wild's death carrying on the curse of child stars & fast cars with no karting background, if you really want a long shot, well.........

  6. I bet Tim R is pissed off.

He, like me, chose Clarence Ray Allen, but decided to play his joker on Michael Morales, another execution possibility. Although Morales' execution did receive less publicity than Allen, you could bank on the Guardian or someone mentioning it.

However, Morales' execution has been indefinitely suspended & court actions may keep it suspended for some while i.e. 2007 onwards.

We'll wait & see, but that is unlucky - excellent research, and just his luck to choose the one execution that didn't happen!

  7. The same is true of the Manchester United European Championship side of 1968, George Best being the only fatality to date.

    No it isn't.

George Best followed Shay Brennan, who died in 2000. The other 9 are alive.

  8. Of the 1966 world cup winning side how many actually still inhabit this acrid planet?

All of the 22 members of the squad bar Bobby Moore.

The manager, Sir Alf Ramsey & his coach Harold Shepherdson have also passed away.

The referee & the "Russian" (actually Azerbaijani) linesman are dead as is Ken Wolstenholme.

West Germany's team have 10 survivors - only Lothar Emmerich is dead & two other players in their 22 man squad have also died.

How strange that only 1 from 66 has gone, yet 4 from 1970, 4 years later are gone. Normally, its the other way round.

  9. [ Why hast deathstar not pisted again agter two posts but is saird to be a moderatorr.?

C)Are you happery I finly o[=ened this thread and topic?

    D) Is Albert related to the winfderful Abbie Hoffman?

    Well....

    :P What?

    C) What?

    D) Who?

    Translation:

Why is Deathstar a Moderator but has only posted twice?

I think this one has already been discussed.

Are you happy that I have finally opened this thread & topic?

I have no major feelings personally, but others might

    Abbie Hoffman - Abbie Hoffman.

    No, definitely not.

  10. According to records, even though he was manager for a very short while. Joe Royal (sP?) has the best record with regards to games played / won

Joe Royle? He's never been England manager. I think you're thinking of Joe Mercer, who I mentioned earlier. He was caretaker for a few games, played the flair players & he won most of the games they played in. Think he was caretaker between Ramsey & Revie if my memory serves me correctly.

  11. That often seems the case with managers. They are outstanding when it comes to managing their league team, then they get made up to be England manager and they teams the select rarely serve up the goods.

Keegan did excellent work with Fulham, but when it came to managing England he couldn't reflect the same quality.

Graham Taylor, too. Did miracles at Watford, but miracles were in very short supply when England boss.

  12. Only a small update - whilst reading The Times today it mentioned Mandela had taken voted in his local elections (28th Feb). It mentioned he was frail, but he was well enough to walk to the local booth & make a quick speech for the newspeople nearby.

  13. why cant things be posted in the main forum and in here as well?!

The question, surely, is why should you want to post in Near Misses, when there's already a dedicated thread to him which has announced his death?

Near Misses, as you clearly need some reminding, is those near misses, not covered elsewhere in the forum, who were ones that either the DL should've got or at least people who maybe some of us have heard of. Near misses is not Iain's personal posting of anybody who appears on Recent Deaths Wikipedia page. You seem to be in some fantasy world that you're in a newsroom & you are breaking the news to us of deaths, when most of us have already seen the deaths, dismissed them as nobodies & three days later you're telling us again.

    *Rant Over*

Apparently, he died from oral cancer. So my source, which said he was clear was wrong. :):shoot:

  14. actor Jack Wild has died at 53.he was the original Artful Dodger in Oliver Twist

Too slow again Iain. Posted 20 minutes ago in the Jack Wild thread, which is the obvious place to post, I would've thought.

  15. No. In fact I took him off the DDP longlist completely as he's cancer free and apart from the fact he can't speak is quite healthy.

Hmmm.... The BBC have also announced he has died. Maybe I should look at my reasoning again, or trust better sources... Unless he went suddenly...

    anyway.

  16. Hiding candidates from DL??? How horrible!

Although I will admit that you've got one lucky one: Catherine Bach aka the original Daisy Dukes:

Yes, I know. It's shameful. However, there's not many I have up my sleeve now.

As for my birthday, it is a struggle. There's a few for the ladies like Marc-Paul Gosselaar, but all the most notable ones, Glenn Miller, David Niven, Yitzhak Rabin are dead. From a DL point of view, Harry Belafonte is the best one, though Ron Howard & "Face" from the A Team do their best too.

    However I did find:

    buono.jpg

    Cara Buono, 32 today

    & Alicia Leigh Willis, 28

    Alicia%20Leigh%20Willis%20L.jpg

Don't ask me who they are, but some people here will not be too worried about that!

  17. The ones they did bring in, like Tony Currie, Frank Worthington, then Duncan McKenzie who used to jump over Minis, were after Revie's time.

Worthington, he was another - only 8 caps for England. Currie got 17, but maybe that should've been more. No matter, it's done now.
