Did anyone pick "Second Girl" ?? https://news.google.com/news/story?ncl=dhiWXcms2eu0ADMjbJx93_IiHYLeM&q=has+died&lr=English&hl=en&sa=X&ved=0ahUKEwiqoLz14aPRAhUqIcAKHUTfD74QqgIIJjAA It reminds me of a story my brother told me. He was perusing the wine shelves in a large supermarket when an assistant asked if he needed any help. "Yes" he replied. "I was in a restaurant last night and I was served an exquisite wine with my venison" he said. "Do you remember the name?" asked the assistant. "Yes" replied my brother. "It was 'HOUSE RED.'

January 3rd is my prediction for her to become an ex-queen (just like George Michael) and for us to get an extra day off work (just like the Royals have been doing for centuries)

I am looking forward to the kick off, although I am disappointed that we are still allowing non-celebrities to be (qualifying) picks. I WAS hoping that we would only attribute points to those who get an obits from authorised sources ***AND*** which describe the “celebrity” of the stiff in the first (say) 30 words of the article. For example – the following are from qualifying obits from this current game – · “Italian beauty queen who became a 1950s screen goddess”. · “The character actor was best known for playing . . . . “ · “ the talented Cuban trumpeter” These suggest to the casual reader that, in life, the person had some discernible “celebrity” attributes. HOWEVER, the following from officially scoring obits do seem to lack the celebrity status required (IMHO) for a celebrity dead pool · “Brave mum-of-three” · “a Nevada woman “ · “Pakistani student” There are millions of Brave mums of three, thousands of Nevada women and thousands of Pakistani students, however, in today’s society that does not make them celebrities, whereas – I contend - being a Beauty queen, a character actor and even a Cuban trumpeter does. I know it can be difficult to determine “celebrity” (is a rubik’s cube champion or the world bog-snorkling champion a celebrity???) but I think a bit of common sense should prevail. We all know what 'celebrity' is. It's like pornography - I can't provide a definition of what it is but I know it when I see it. I think that allowing picks who are famous for dying (and not for their celebrity whilst still alive) has significantly weakened the game. That said, bring it on.

That is exactly why I logged in today - to see if there are any updates on any new or tweeked rules

According to the report, he died on TUESDAY yet this was posted on FRIDAY. I think we have the winner chaps ! ! ! ! !

Don't panic guys. If some teams have 10 or 11 hits so far, and you have only (say) 2 or 3, YOU can get another 17 or 18 hits in the next 7 months - they can only get 9 or 10. The person with the most points AT THE END of the game wins. :-)

he looked bad at the Oscars I guess. Baftas

Get Sidney Poitier on the list ! ! !

Like this one? http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/asia/japan/12107492/Worlds-oldest-man-Yasutaro-Koide-dies-in-Japan-aged-112.html Cheers man. I wasn't sure tbh whether those counted Asian pages in UK newspapers are fine. It is only Scottish Newspapers that have been excluded (despite the fact that the Daily Record and Herald combined sell approximately the same number of print copies as the Guardian and the Independent combined) (238,00 as opposed to 246,00)

This says he died "last month" "Craig Strickland's wife revealed that her husband was buried under a cedar tree - the same type of tree he was found under after he died last month" http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3400398/A-fitting-resting-place-Craig-Strickland-s-widow-reveals-country-singer-buried-type-tree-body-nine-days-going-missing-hunting-trip.html

Is it blasphemy to say I prefer Lulu's version of "The Man Who Sold The World"? I have a theory about cover versions, and it is this - In MOST CASES people prefer the version that THEY HEARD FIRST, not necessarily the version that was released first. Of course there are exceptions to this, hence my use of the words "in most cases" That is my theory. (sniff)

I just had to share this tribute to Bowie from Glasgow http://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish-news/watch-musician-perform-touching-tribute-7160072#rlabs=3%20rt$sitewide%20p$6

FOR THE RECORD: - I would like to point out that as TMIB is the organiser any decisions about rules and qualifying obits, and who can and cannot be picked, it is up to him. I want to make it clear that I am not complaining in my posts. The rules are the rules. Where I come from we have an expression - "Mah baw, mah rulez" - which, for those uncultured readers, translates as, "it is my football therefore any and all games played with it will be played, without question and without any arguing, in accordance with the rules and regulations that I set out or else one can fuck off and play elsewhere with other like-minded souls." (We scots have a nuance for succinct expression ! ! !) So it is TMIB's baw, and his rulez. My posts are meant to be positive (although I do admit that I sound like a whinging bastard at times ! ! ! ) and I am merely trying to contribute to the ongoing discussion about the recent changes to the rules and to POSSIBLE changes moving forward. Once again, I take my hat off to you, TMIB, and to all participants for allowing the competition to go from strength to strength. Thank you sir and thank you all. DAAS.

Just a few scribbling to discuss (if you wish) There have been a few mutterings about the “celebrity” value of some of our picks. What I am about to suggest is not my final thoughts on the matter, but are just a few ramblings for the general body of the Kirk to discuss. As we know, we need to have a mention of a death in certain outlets. No issue with that (apart from what I have already said about foreign picks having a better chance of getting a qualifying obit than Scottish or Welsh picks) What I am about to suggest gives MORE power to the obit writers and that is in how THEY choose to describe people who have died. I suggest that we only attribute points to those who get an obits from authorised sources ***AND*** which describe the “celebrity” of the stiff in the first (to be discussed -) 30 words For example – the following are from qualifying obits from this current game – “Italian beauty queen who became a 1950s screen goddess”. “The character actor was best known for playing . . . . “ “ the talented Cuban trumpeter” These suggest to the casual reader that the person concerned had some discernible “celebrity” attributes. HOWEVER, the following from officially scoring obits do seem to lack the celebrity status required (IMHO) for a celebrity dead pool – (I am not quibbling about their inclusion THIS YEAR as the rules are there to see for all, I am merely trying to put forward some suggestions for FUTURE competitions) “Brave mum-of-three” “a Nevada woman “ “Pakistani student” What do you think? Should we give more power to the obit writers ???

Reuters. uk.reuters.com IS on the list of sites which provide qualifying obits. www.reuters.com is NOT on the lists, and neither are fr.reuters.com de.reuters.com jp.reuters.com etc . . . . HOWEVER: - The daily Mail on-line uses "wires" services (such as AP, PA and reuters.) http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/index.html Just for clarification, would THIS count as a qualifying obit - http://www.dailymail.co.uk/wires/reuters/article-2943982/John-Whitehead-former-leader-Goldman-Sachs-died-company.html Although published in the Mail (which is allowed) the source is reuters (Washington) which isn't. Thanks

Yes, I do hope that TMIB reconsiders the BBC obit situation. While I think it's fair enough to exclude obits on the county level, it doesn't seem right to ban those that appear in the home nation level. Who knows, it might not make any difference. We shall see as time goes on.
