My tuppence worth. The definition of A CELEBRITY is a rather difficult one to make. How many times have you watched a UK "celebrity" show (such as IACGMOOH or celebrity big brother) and said "WHO?" I picked Lauren Hill last year because I thought I would be a mug not to. She was a legitimate pick then and (if she was still alive) would be a legitimate pick today (as Hassan Asif is) I do not think they SHOULD be allowed but I know that it is difficult to legislate for defining who should be allowed to be picked. Whilst the suggestion of the candidates having a Wikipedia page for a year before they can become a “candidate” has some merit it does not allow for “new” celebrities, for example, WHEN did Harold Shipman’s Wikipedia page go live? Even one of the picks from LAST YEAR, Martin Foran, STILL does not have a Wikipedia page (as I am sure quite a lot do not have either) One of my picks is former TV producer (and my ex boss at BBC Information) Gordon Ross. He does not have a Wikipedia page. But he also poses another problem for me too. Gordon has been all over the media in Scotland as he is a very vociferous proponent of people having the right to die with dignity, yet I am not convinced that if he passes he will get a scoring obit. I just googled him and I get plenty of reports from BBC Scotland, STV, the Herald, The Scotsman and The Daily record – ALL of which were accepted for official obits for 19 years but are all of a sudden no longer accepted for official obits. It seems rather perverse that what started out as a British celebrity dead pool now gives foreigners a better chance of scoring an official obit as it does our ain folk. THESE BBC URLs DO COUNT www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/africa http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/australia http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/europe http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/latin_america www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world/us_and_canada Yet this one doesn’t. www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland I know that the candidate that this obit is about DID get other obits, but it is rather strange that THIS OBIT does not qualify: - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-scotland-politics-32970337 but this one does: - http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-33769486 Rant over. I am now donning my asbestos underwear.

Regional bbc pages (England, Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland) will no longer count as legit UK obits, so the above examples would not qualify, although the latter almost certainly got a legit obit elsewhere. UK overall however would, such as this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-33082773 Many thanks for the clarification.

Regarding qualifying obits, I welcome the streamlining of the sources. May I ask for clarification please? bbc.co.uk/news/uk (that's UK in general, not it's component parts - Scotland, Wales, NI etc) I was wondering why "etc" was used instead of the word "England" ? Would I be correct in assuming that, as of next year, obits such as THIS one would not qualify? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-wales-35190414 And accordingly, I assume that obits such as THIS one would equally not qualify? http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-34106225 I look forward to the clarification. Thanks for all of the hard work .

One of my drain-circlers has departed, but I am not over confident about a qualifying obit for Teresa Sandeman-Charles. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Save5/177877255611210?sk=info&tab=page_info

Here is my 2p worth If the hostage HAD NOT been kidnapped, and got hit by an ordinary Clapham omnibus (and not one being driven by George Michael or Prince Harry) would the average person who was on the said bus think that the deid guy would have gotten a qualifying obit? If so, they should count. if not, they should not. Hereth endeth my two penneth worth guvnor

If Scotland becomes independent what will the rest of the UK be called? Scotland will be called "Scotland" but there will be no country of "Great Britain", there for there can be no country of "the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern ireland"
