The Fringes Of Fame/family Of The Famous

On Saturday afternoon, just hours before the game, the Baltimore Ravens announced that Bobbi Engram, the daughter of Ravens wide receivers coach and former NFL wide receiver Bobby Engram, died Saturday morning at the age of 20. A cause of death was not immediately made known. However, Bobbi had been born with hereditary sickle-cell disease, which she carried with her throughout her life. It is unclear if Sickle Cell Disease was the cause of Engram's death. Engram established his own charitable foundation in order to help underpriveleged children who were suffering from the same illness. SC

    José José

Jose Jose's daughter Marysol (no relation to Pine Sol) is pregnant, so JJ is going to be a grandfather once again. The article confirms he is 'still in Miami' receiving treatment, so he has never left. Did the family suggest his daughter squirreled him away and wouldn't allow them to see him (see Joe Jackson)? Yes they did....so how does any of that make sense when he is parked in hospital in Miami? SC

    Animal Antics

A gorilla named Fritz, one of the oldest of his kind living in a European zoo, was euthanized on Monday in southern Germany. Officials at Nuremberg Zoo said the 55-year-old's health had deteriorated steadily over the weekend — to the point where he could hardly move at all. SC

    Political Frailty

Charles Lancaster Jr., a former longtime state legislator from Metairie (LA) who colleagues said was feisty and fervently Republican but never mean-spirited during 32 years in the state House, died early Friday of a heart attack. He was 74. Lancaster played a pivotal role in helping to build the modern Republican Party in Jefferson Parish and indeed throughout Louisiana. Still, he developed close relationships with Democrats, even as he fought them on the House floor over policy differences. Lancaster was the first Republican elected to represent Jefferson Parish in the Legislature since Reconstruction. By the time term limits forced him from office in 2008, the suburb was solidifying its role as the biggest Republican parish in the state. SC

Horace "Doc" Edwards died in San Antonio, Texas. He was 81. He was a backup catcher for most his major league playing career. Born in Red Jacket, W.Va. in 1936, Edwards earned his nickname after service time as a medic in the Navy. He played in 317 games in the major leagues from 1962-70 with a. 238 batting average 15 home runs and 87 RBIs for Cleveland, Kansas City, Philadelphia and New York Yankees. Edwards managed the Cleveland Indians from 1987 to '89 and compiled a record of 173-207 in three years, including the strike-shortened 1987 season. He would later managed the minor league Buffalo Bisons for two seasons (1993-94). Interestingly, despite playing in 300 more games than Joe Landrum (above), I can not find a baseball card for him as a player. Hmmm. SC

    Dead Pop Stars

Wiki page needs updating (Roey Juss, STAT) I don't mind pop music from the pre-Elvis 50s.... but this isn't very good imho. Thank God that Don Cherry of hockey fame came around and resurrected the name from it's lows of 1955.
