Her 1993 nuptials inspired the hit movie "My Big Fat Greek Wedding," and the marriage lasted for nearly 25 years. But on Friday, Nia Vardalos, 55, filed for divorce from husband Ian Gomez, 53, citing irreconcilable differences. SC -

A groundbreaking scholar on slavery and Reconstruction has died. Willie Lee Rose was 91. Rose died in her sleep June 20 at a Baltimore retirement community. Rose was known for the 1964 publication, "Rehearsal for Reconstruction," a prize-winning study of a black community off the Atlantic coast and its struggles to build a post-slavery society. The book won the Francis Parkman Prize for history among other honors and was cited as among the works that helped lead to a more balanced and positive view of Reconstruction and freed slaves. In 1970, a committee led by Rose released an influential study condemning gender inequality in the historical profession. She taught at Johns Hopkins from 1973-1992. SC

Leon Tabbs, 86, formerly of Germantown, a renowned cut man in boxing and mixed martial arts, died Friday, June 15, of congestive heart failure at an assisted living community in Atlanta. Initially, Mr. Tabbs hoped to become a professional boxer. He started training at age 13, entering the amateur ring in New Jersey and winning the 1948 Silver Gloves title as a featherweight. Before his career in boxing, Gradually though, his focus shifted to training and managing boxers, including light heavyweight Jerry “the Bull” Martin. But he had his biggest success as a cut man – one who handles swelling of the face, nosebleeds, and lacerations in the fighter’s corner during the breaks between rounds. Philadelphia’s Bernard “the Executioner” Hopkins, a middleweight and light heavyweight boxing champion, engaged his services frequently. SC

Couple more closing in. Nawaz for instance, and Jose. Like to think they won't see U.S. Labor Day.

He's another Joe Jackson (daughter has him locked in basement, no one can visit). So really going to be tough getting meaningful updates imho. I went with him in a couple recent DPs due to the death warmed over look. I think the next time we hear about him will be ala Joe Jackson 'days to live'. SC

I'd have never heard of the damned indie Shins if it weren't for them being on an episode of Yo Gabba Gabba. (Note 1: The deceased wasn't a member of the Shits Shins when this was aired) (Note 2: As shitty as they are, this should be my deadpooling theme song "Sometimes you win sometimes you lose but it's ok try again")

An octopus, who correctly predicted all of Japan's World Cup results, has been killed and turned into sashimi. The mollusc, named Rabio, was hailed as psychic after an experiment in a paddling pool. But Kimio Abe, the fisherman who caught Rabio, felt he'd make more money selling it for food than from its clairvoyance. SC

He's #4 on my 5-4-3-2-1 hit list, he looked like this was his month after a year of whining about C.

Nah, other than the title saying it, it never mentioned any charities she was involved in, just 'volunteer' work, and even then never mentioned where she volunteered. So I dont' think it fit there. It crossed my mind of course. Edit: Sorry, meant to attach Cat's post. Maybe Cat you should read the obit before posting.
