Blain Padgett, a star defensive end for the Rice Owls, has died, Rice University athletics confirmed tonight. Padgett did not show up for a workout Friday morning and coaches started to worry, contacting his family. Padgett was found at his home and apparently died in his sleep. So far, though, there is no official cause of death. Padgett had a monster sophomore year, leading the defensive line with 41 tackles and 5.5 tackles for loss. SC

Musician James "Nick" Nixon, an omnipresent and beloved figure in Nashville's blues and R&B scenes for 50 years, died Wednesday. He was 76 years old, and over the course of his career, worked with everyone from legendary rock 'n' roll guitarist Scotty Moore to gospel group the Fairfield Four. Allow me to post my ‘hit’ in the 2018 Cup. Red dirt music figure Brandon Jenkins of Tulsa has died. The news was posted to his official Facebook page Friday evening. He was 48. Jenkins was admitted to a Nashville hospital on Feb. 21 for a heart procedure, but there were complications, and he remained hospitalized. (For the record the ‘red dirt’ style of country is a throwback to what real country should sound like. The country genre I can’t stand, but this sub genre I enjoy immensely, and sadly I never saw Jenkins perform. RIP) The video below is a song Jenkins wrote and posted Feb 18. It would be his last. He went in hospital a couple days later. He also just released his new album (his 18th!). Like I did with Joey Feek, I’ll probably buy it out of respect and posterity. SC

William Borders, a former foreign correspondent who rose to senior editing positions at The New York Times in a 46-year career there, died on Wednesday at his home in Manhattan. He was 79. SC

Dorne Dibble, a former Michigan State All-American who won a pair of NFL Championships with the Detroit Lions, died on Thursday at age 88, the university announced Friday afternoon. Dibble was a third-round selection (No. 33 overall) by the Detroit Lions in the 1951 NFL draft. He played a total of six seasons with the Lions - 1951 and 1953-57. In 68 games with the Lions, Dibble had 146 catches for 2,552 yards and 19 touchdowns. SC

A radical Islamic cleric who was the spiritual leader of the Bali bombers and a force behind a jihadist training camp raided in 2010 has been transferred from prison to a Jakarta hospital. Guarded by four paramilitary police officers, the ailing white-bearded Abu Bakar Bashir arrived at the hospital in Indonesia’s capital on Thursday morning. He was sentenced to 15 years in prison in 2011 for supporting a military-style training camp for militants that was uncovered the year before. The octogenarian Bashir suffers from medical problems including chronically weak blood circulation. A copy of a prison memo said Bashir is being treated for pooling of blood in the legs, a common condition in old age known as chronic venous insufficiency. SC
