Shamba, the oldest gorilla at Zoo Atlanta and one of the oldest gorillas in the United States, died Friday. Zoo personnel reported that Shamba was discovered unresponsive by her care team, and the decision was made to euthanize her. She was 58. Western lowland gorillas are considered geriatric after the age of about 35, and Shamba was part of a group of super-senior gorillas. She and her female counterpart, 54-year-old Choomba, were fondly referred to as the “Golden Girls” by zoo staff. Their male companion, 56-year-old Ozzie, is the oldest living male gorilla in the world. Choomba and Ozzie are both behaving normally following the loss of their group member, according to Zoo Atlanta. SC

Absolutely a fair argument, but what an awful precedence. That isn't a headline or a story, it's play-by-play. How the hell is that an 'O' for a QO???? It's not a goddamn 'O'. Just cuz a mistake was made allowing the first one doesn't mean we make the same error in perpetuity. Does it? SC

I have friends on FB who knew him well and so read a lot of posts, but didn't think it was quite notable enough, so didn't post. Anyway, yesterday a sad day on my FB. FWIW, if you go to Mike Hudson's FB page, he was posting like regular, nothing going on as of early A.M. on the 25th. Two days later dead. SC

Not sure if these are related, but when I was 7 and my younger sister arrived on the scene, I was told the Stork brought it. SC -
Applebee's also let's kids eat free on (Tuesdays I believe), and the food is passable, it's a decent place. From what I see in parking lots of eateries, business is booming. But that's perhaps the local economies of Lafayette, LA vs other parts of the country. As far as ethnic foods go, I think you're right on,Old Lady. Given my druthers, I prefer to eat Arabic or Mexican vs a steakhouse. Sadly, living in Acadiana, there is no Arabic food. And they're kinda crazy there -- open up another Cajun restaurant and people flock to it lol the same stuff they eat at home smh. But open a Red Lobster, it goes out of business (It ain't authentic lol). True. SC

Macaroni Grill closed 37 restaurants in 2017, but it wasn't enough. Debt grew and sales fell, while costs for labor and commodities increased, leaving the Italian dining chain $12 million behind by August. The situation isn't unique among the U.S. casual restaurant sector, which increasingly shows stress. Ruby Tuesday, Applebees and Outback all have announced closings. SC

You are wiser than wise, President Mugabe. Those are my favourite sport and favourite music artist. I want to both congratulate you on your new post as Humanitarian Ambassador, which was far too long coming, and to give condolences for the do-gooders who wronged you by stripping you of the post. Good catch, President Mugabe. Actaully ALL college sports are fringe imho, as I don't bother much with college football, like many good Americans, both white and black, will be doing today. As for college basketball, I have almost no interest, maybe watch a couple tournament games. SC -

The head of Hamas security forces in the Gaza Strip, General Tawfiq Abu Naim, sustained moderate wounds from an explosion next to his car in central Gaza on Friday. While at this point it remains unclear who was behind the attempted assassination, reports in Gaza say that members of the Salafi jihadist movement, which is associated with Islamic State, are responsible for the attack. In 2014, The Young and the Restless star Kristoff St. John’s son, Julian, took his own life. He had reportedly struggled with schizophrenia and his mental illness caused him to endure everything from addiction to homelessness. According to Julian’s mother and Kristoff’s ex-wife Mia, when it all became too hard for him, their son chose to “set himself free.” That loss has continued to weigh heavily on Kristoff, and as the anniversary of his son’s death approaches, the actor considered taking his own life due to the grief. Kristoff was hospitalized for 72 hours to undergo a psychiatric evaluation after sending photos of himself with a gun to his head to his ex. SC Edit: Looks like his son died on or around the last day of November 2014, so let's see this one play out.

The Golden State Warriors are having 'Al Attles Night' as a tribute to one of their great old players/coaches, but Attles won't be attending, as he's in hospital instead. He's 80. One to keep an eye on. And an easy obit, no worries there: "He became known as “The Destroyer” during his 11-year NBA career with the Warriors where he averaged 8.9 points, 3.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists, while ranking fifth on the Warriors’ all-time games played listed (711). During his 13-year coaching career with the Warriors, Attles led Golden State to its first NBA title in 1975 as well as six playoff appearances. Attles is also one of six Warriors players to have his jersey retired (No. 16) along with Rick Barry (24), Wilt Chamberlain (13), Tom Meschery (14), Chris Mullin (17) and Nate Thurmond (42)." SC -

He was born Bert Smith, but Minnesotans knew him primarily as the "Krusher", "Killer" or "Big K" — part of a pro wrestling tag team called Murder Incorporated. Krusher Kowalski won 19 major titles, and was a World War II veteran. He died Friday at 91. Man I had forgotten his name until today. Sorry to hear his passing, he was a popular wrestler in the Midwest where I grew up. SC

And way beyond the reaches of having his own thread. Absurd. But thanks for signing up, lifeis... (assuming this is Life Is Beautiful--who also posted about Leavelle earlier), and then making your 3rd post a reboot of a discussion about Mr. Leavelle we had briefly in 'Possibilities for 2017' thread. Not every human is worthy of a thread, this one is absurd. Oh I said that already. SC

Film editor Margaret Booth was the longest-lived person to have received an Oscar (died this day 15 years ago (104)) , a record she held for 12 years until pesky little Luise Rainer (died at 105) came around. Born in the 1800s, died in the 2000s, not a lot of folks got to say that.

Powell appeared in nine games for the Reds in 1993, striking out 17 in 16 1/3 innings. The Reds traded Powell to the Houston Astros in April of 1994 with Marty Lister for catcher Eddie Taubensee. Powell pitched for Houston in 1994 and 1995, and Pittsburgh in 1995. SC
