    Internet Celebrities

Hollister “Holly” Moore, 69, a pioneering Philadelphia food writer/blogger, hot dog enthusiast, and lover of the city’s diners and hidden gems, died Monday, July 31, from complications from an infection. Mr. Moore went from a job in the world of fast food, where he was part of the launch of the Big Mac, to a career as a restaurateur and small business owner before finding local celebrity as a food writer. Mr. Moore was an early and avid adopter of blogging as a platform for sharing his encyclopedic knowledge of Philadelphia’s unpretentious lunch counters, taquerias, and hot-dog stands. His site “Holly Eats,” founded in 2000, featured reviews with a distinctive “grease stain” rating system he used to measure his enjoyment of a meal.

    Do You Actually Research?

Why is that important or relevant? There are like a dozen other DPs just on this site, much less many of us play DPs locally with friends. A person may do plenty of research and just play a couple of those DPs. I didn't play DDP the first two years I was hanging around here. This is a thread re: research, not DDP. SC

Hormel sees potential new customers for its shelf-stable foods: cancer patients. The company known for Spam canned meats and Dinty Moore stews is promoting microwavable meals it says cater to people who are going through chemotherapy and are sensitive to certain tastes. Its Vital Cuisine meals, launched last year, are also marketed as delivering the nutrients and convenience people might want if they’re too exhausted to cook or leave the house for food. SC

    Do You Actually Research?

Like you, I had a list about 300 long and started scything bit by bit. But I don't/won't bother writing names daily. Ain't got time for dat. I'll probably spend a solid weekend in early December going over the names mentioned here and a 100 or so I've written on post-it notes all year, stuffed napkins in books, the back of time sheets for work, etc.

    Tennis players

Hell no. Oh sure you had two notable (one of which was unknown) this week, but damn near all known ALS sufferers are carrying on just fine tyvm. Sadly I can't find 20 or I'd field a theme team. I came up with about 12 of note. Granted, 'of note' or 'I came up with' can be questioned cuz I never heard or discovered this tennis player, before or after death, so I"m a bozo. But a bozo that is correct in saying your comment about ALS hits is off the mark. SC

(As we say in the D....) The victims, 27-year- old Raymell Campbell and 26-year- old Dominique Brown, were pronounced dead on scene. The white Chrysler 200 they were traveling in was hit with around 30 bullets, leading to the highway being closed for nearly nine hours.Campbell was known as 47 Mell and Brown was referred to as Domo Brown. 47 Mell was a popular Detroit Emcee. Brown had received local recognition despite only recording music for a month. The pair were recent guests on Hot 107.5’s Friday Night Cypher. The two were departing from a recording studio at the time they were slain.Brown, who died on her older brother’s birthday, leaves behind a 4-year- old-son and 1-year- old daughter. SC

    Animal Antics

#38: In a Toronto suburb, a life-sized chrome cow sculpture raised two storeys high on stilts is being interpreted as ugly, strange, and scary. "We don't like it. It scares the children," resident Danny Dasilva said. The sculpture, titled Charity, Perpetuation of Perfection, is anything but perfect for people in the Cathedraltown subdivision near Highway 404 and Elgin Mills Road. Many gathered this week to demand that the recently installed artwork be removed immediately. For some, the lifelike bovine lacks taste. "I think it's strange to see the cow's butt every morning," 11-year-old Charity Crescent resident Chloe told CBC News. SC

    Bovine Attacks

The Hall County (Nebraska) Sheriff's Department was called out to a car vs. cow accident on Highway 281, just south of Interstate 80 late Sunday night. Sgt. Jason Smith said the driver of the vehicle was uninjured, but the cow did die. The vehicle had to be towed away from the scene. Then hours later around 3 a.m. Monday, the sheriff's department was called out again to another car vs. cow accident. It was in the same location as the earlier accident. Nobody was injured from the vehicle. Smith said the cow did get hurt but said it was up to the rancher on what action they would take in regards to the cow. SC

    Scientists, Inventors And Techno Wizards

Dr. David Jones, who died July 19 at 79, at times described himself as a fraud, charlatan and “court jester in the palace of science.” But the inventions that he outlined in his columns, often written under the pen name Daedalus, were informed by a doctorate in organic chemistry and a life spent in joyful pursuit of scientific progress. Beginning in 1964, he wrote weekly pieces for the London-based New Scientist magazine. He later contributed to the publication Nature, Britain’s Guardian newspaper, and to television programs in England and Germany before retiring in the early 2000s. Dunno who he is, figured some of you might. Sounds like he was interesting enough. SC

    University Presidents?

"The University of Tulsa has learned that former TU President Steadman Upham died Sunday, July 30, from complications following a recent surgery. He is survived by his wife, Peggy; their children, Nathan and Erin; and their grandchildren, Orion and Aadrock. (Nice names...) Upham joined TU in 2004 and served as president until 2012, and then returned later that year to resume the role at the request of the Board of Trustees. He retired in 2016 and planned to return to TU as a faculty member in the Department of Anthropology. Instead he returns as an EXHIBIT in the Department of Anthropology. SC
