Gotta get up pretty early to get one past Dead Wait.

Not the same day but pert near. What would (and frankly should) have been a worldwide mourning became a 'meh' when Mother Teresa died a few days after Lady Di. I still can't believe the death that overshadowed the other wasn't in reverse. I don't understand this crazy world. SC

Twenty-six people have been killed in Egypt after unidentified gunmen opened fire on a bus carrying Coptic Christians in what officials are calling a terror attack. Ten assailants wearing fatigues and face masks fired on the passengers from three four-wheel drive vehicles, Egypt's Interior Ministry said. The Christians were traveling Friday to a monastery, St. Samuel the Confessor, around 100 km (62 miles) northwest of the city of Minya when they came under fire. SC

Can we please stop with the "X stopped (insert what they did for a vocation) # of years ago"? Try and be slightly more creative, or drop it altogether and say "X - # years ago". I think this sentiment was voiced a week ago or summat. SC

'Retirement' hasn't been too good for many musicians either. No way to reproduce the Adrenalin rush of performing....with nothing but time and maybe a bit of money... not a great combo. and/or ill health (as here). Anyway, a quality share GCReptile. SC

Former Marshall football coach Ulmo “Sonny” Randle died overnight at age 81, according to multiple news reports. Randle, a 10-year veteran of the NFL with the Chicago/St. Louis Cardinals, San Francisco 49ers, Dallas Cowboys and Washington Redskins, coached the Thundering Herd from 1979-83. He also had stints as a head coach at East Carolina (1971-73) and his alma mater Virginia (1974-75). As Marshall’s head coach, he amassed a five-year record of 12-42-1, his best season coming in his final season, where the Herd went 4-7. Following his coaching career, Randle dove into a second successful career as a broadcaster. SC -

#24: A woman was taken to the hospital after being attacked by a moose in the Eaglewood neighborhood of Eagle River on Monday evening. According to the Anchorage Police Department, the woman suffered non life threatening injuries in the incident. A police dispatcher said Monday evening the moose left the immediate area after the confrontation. The moose was apparently a cow with two calves. Greg Beck said his sister was walking her two dogs when the moose apparently attacked. He didn’t know much about what happened, but said the attack was bad enough to put her in the intensive care unit with “a bunch of broken ribs and lacerations.” Beck said his sister needed help finding her cell phone (gotta have priorities!) and glasses Tuesday. Didn't we show that walking dogs was a catalyst in over 50% of all bovine attacks? Looks like moose hate em too. SC

This came across my FB newsfeed for some reason today. Olga's Kitchen is a semi-popular restaurant (was moreso 1985-95 I'd say), and as I recall the first to introduce 'wraps' sandwiches to the U.S. market (unlike a burrito). OK enough background info -- a certain NYTimes obit here, but who knows her chances on the Pond's other side? "The woman behind Olga's Kitchen, Olga Loizon, turns 91 today, and the franchise she created from the ground up is celebrating with Snackers, Snackers, and more Snackers." Apparently it's a new product offering at Olga's. SC

A prominent state medical examiner who conducted hundreds of autopsies, testified at hundreds of murder trials, and was described Monday by Maine’s attorney general as “a force of nature in the forensic world,” died Sunday night. Dr. Henry F. Ryan of Augusta, who modernized the Office of Chief Medical Examiner during his more than two decades in the post, was 78 when he died at a rehabilitation facility in Augusta. Ryan was appointed chief medical examiner in 1976 by Gov. James B. Longley and served until his retirement in 1998. [Dr. Henry F. Ryan, a longtime Maine chief medical examiner, is shown on the set of the movie "Thinner," in which he played a bit part as a medical examiner.] SC

On Monday the Blackhawks confirmed the death of Bill White at the age of 77, a former player who even had brief stint as the team’s head coach. White played for the team from 1969-1976 and helped them to a pair of appearances in the Stanley Cup Final. He appeared in six-straight All-Star Games from his first year in 1969 through the 1974 mid-season classic. During his seasons in Chicago, the defenseman scored 30 goals and dished out 139 assists. In the 1976-1977 season, White served as the interim head coach of the Blackhawks for 46 games following the firing of longtime coach Billy Reay. He would lead the team to the playoffs before losing in the first round to the New York Islanders. SC
