He's a gold medal boxer I'm not concerned about an obit. You can change people midstream? I gotta learn rules of all these DPs, someone should post them all in one link called DL Rules or summat. SC

I've posted about six Tuskegee Airmen over the past couple years. Wiki says they don't know how many there are remaining, but I think 35-40 is a fair guess. Anyway let the countdown begin. When they become rarer than hen's teeth we will get an accurate count. They should be in their very late 80s by now. One of the original Tuskegee Airmen, Dr. Thurston L. Gaines, Jr., died in California Saturday. He was 94. Gaines, as one of World War II's Tuskegee Airmen, was one of the United State's first black military pilots. He flew a P-51 Mustang in 1945. In April 1945, Gaines was shot down over Germany and captured. He was held in German prisons until he was liberated in June of 1945 by Gen. Patton's division. Gaines received the Congressional Gold Medal from President George W. Bush in 2007. He also received the Purple Heart. @Viceroy, as the official welcoming committee here at DL, allow me to properly welcome you. Don’t mind Paul Bearer, he’s a twat. SirC -

I created this thread once before and it was moved to Survivors. Now maybe that was the original intent of that thread but if you look at it (Admins I'm talking to you) you'll see it's been hijacked completely for nefarious purposes unrelated to "being the last surviving member" of something. So let's try this once again. Mahlon Duckett, who died at age 92 on Sunday night (Sept 13), was the last surviving member of the Philadelphia Stars Negro League baseball team. As always, it's sad to loose these institutions personified. RIP SirC http://www.philly.com/philly/sports/phillies/20150714_Former_Philadelphia_Stars_Negro_League_player_Mahlon_Duckett_dies_at_92.html#GgoGWlJQBU1eKlQe.99

Clemson University baseball pitcher Drew Titsworth! Of COURSE his uniform # is (.)(.) “A right-hander with an unorthodox delivery” that could describe any one of us when confronted with those things… https://clemsontigers.com/sports/baseball/roster/drew-titsworth/

Let's lump all these folks into one thread. Not all of them are past NFL players, though a chunk of them are (Steve Gleason, Tim Shaw, OJ Brigance, etc). Lest we forget the Pete Frates of the world, Jason Becker or even Stephen Hawking (though he's covered plenty elsewhere), or the late Sam Shepard. Not every affliction needs it's own thread, but this one is pretty well-defined and the progression easy enough to follow. And with that, a Tim Shaw update. He looks good enough, not even in a wheelchair at this point, so I think we can give him a pass to 2019 before we need to check in on him. SC

Seems we should have a thread for renowned physicians, nurses and the like. Quentin Young, a Chicago physician renowned for his passionate advocacy for equality in health care — and whose patients included Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., Studs Terkel, and former mayor Harold Washington — has died. The retired 92-year-old internist for many years ran a private practice in Chicago's Hyde Park neighborhood, where a young Barack Obama was a patient in the 1990s. The doctor and future president became close, a relationship that evolved into discussions about health care policy, and a shared interest in reform. SC

*Reads very lengthy obit, listing many of his appearances on stage and screen* Obit doesn't mention Father Ted.

Having not long ago lost a former Miss Valenzuela who was homeless for 15 years, and now a former Miss Nigeria, let's give them a heavenly pageant to reunite. Former Miss Nigeria and sister to famous actor Hank Anuku, Rita Anuku, has died. Rita, who won the Miss Nigeria pageant in 1986, died yesterday July 2nd in a hospital in Abuja after a battle with cancer. The mother of four was just 47 years old. I’m surprised we didn’t hear about it.

Maryland Gov. Larry Hogan, who says he remains in remission from non-Hodgkin's lymphoma , announced Thursday he has been diagnosed with "very non-serious skin cancer ." Hogan had some skin removed last month from his forehead as part of regular trips he makes to the dermatologist. The governor said it turned out to be basal-cell and squamous-cell skin cancer, but not melanoma, which is a serious form of skin cancer. Yeah yeah....cancer isn't serious. Until it is. SC

If you had ‘Two players from the 1981 World Series in back to back days’ you can mark your bingo card. After Fernando Valenzuela died on Tuesday, news broke on Thursday that his former World Series rival Rudy May had also passed away. The two pitchers dueled in the 1981 World Series. At the time of their deaths, Valenzuela was 63 years old and May was 80.

We have a Last of the Mohicans thread, it would have been nice to show it some love with this obit.

Assisted Suicide to be precise, and it would have been nice to see that thread get some love.

Been To Any Good Gigs Lately?

KMFDM’s 40th anniversary tour last night. The song selection and performance was fine, and we met all the band members, but the sound wasn’t very good. This was at St Andrew’s Hall in the D, which I’ve never known as having a bad sound; so blaming their sound guy, who we were ‘advising’ what needed doing but he ignored us. SC -
So many obits proclaim 'she was the first woman to (insert accomplishment)', that these neophyte ladies deserve their own place in DL. (African Americans sans 'americans' will be getting one too, probably by week's end.) So with that.... Sunset “Sunny” Hale, the first woman in polo history to win the U.S. Open in a male-dominated sport, died Sunday night in Norman, Okla. Hale, 48, died due to complications from cancer. The world’s greatest women’s polo player founded the Women’s Championship Tournament (WCT) that opened the door and broke down barriers for other girls and women to pursue their passion. She helped revive the U.S. Women’s Open in 2011. SC
