Should title this thread Least Significant Death of [Year] Stephanie Slater, who was kidnapped by killer Michael Sams in 1992, has died aged 50 after a short battle with cancer. Maybe that fact pushes her outside this thread. I don't believe so. Quick...name another kidnap victim. See. SC

Former Univ of Louisville basketball coach Denny Crum was hospitalized Wednesday due to what doctors believe was a mild stroke, Susan Sweeny Crum confirmed. Susan Crum said her husband fell ill while fishing, and was air-lifted to Providence Hospital in Anchorage, Alaska. SC

I would like to present the idea that we take some hack like Rich Piana and find a way to post about him in EVERY thread. Oh sure, 99.8% of the posts will be contrived, but 100% will be amusing. Just pick the person and off we go! SC

Interestingly Sept 1 had no notable deaths in 2016, as per Wiki. Not even anyone nearly as important as Rich Piana.

He died on Leonard's 99th birthday. -
I don't think we can rebuild him. We don't have the technology. We can't make him better than he was. Better, stronger, faster...

51 last I heard. For those who are unaware, which is basically everyone, Beaumont is far from a small town. I won't look it up but I'm certain they have 60000 people, so we are talking many miles of suburbs effected. It's the largest city between Lake Charles LA and Houston TX. Funny thing is I drive through these areas all the time and saw the 'hurricane evacuation' signs posted on the highway, and thought that's crazy putting signs all the way out here. It's hard to imagine without seeing it for myself. SC -

Well now new challenges have presented themselves. Today the news is saying that gas stations in many parts of Texas are without fuel (the refineries are offline), not to mention the 20% increase already nationwide at the pump. I am supposed to go home from west Texas to southern Louisiana in 4 days. So not only can I not travel through Houston (my normal route), but even if I go through Dallas and add 70 miles to the journey, finding gasoline along the way may be troublesome. They're showing lines of 2+ hours at stations that actually have petrol. I can get 400 miles on a tank, but I need 2 tanks to get home. Yay me! SC (Edit: I am going out to Pecos, TX tonight to tie one on at the local watering hole, and if I can fill up at one of the four local petrol stations, by God I will) -
As reported earlier this year, today (August 31) is the final day of production of the Dodge Viper. RIP

In an attempt to avoid having family release unfinished works, the late Terry Pratchett apparently told his longtime friend Neil Gaiman that he wanted whatever he was working on at this death to be destroyed, this week Pratchett’s estate followed through on that request by letting a steamroller crush his computer’s hard drive. The manager of Pratchett’s estate tweeted a picture of an intact hard drive in front of a waiting steamroller a few days ago along with a caption about fulfilling an “obligation to Terry.” He then shared another photo of the same hard drive shattered and scratched—presumably beyond any hope for repair. Boy, I had forgotten about this band and song -- another in that line of 'Blood Sweat and Tears' sound alikes, like my go to karaoke song by Ides of March, 'Vehicle'. Maybe I need to do this one at karaoke (In typical DP fashion, prior to singing the song I actually DO announce that a member of the band has died if in fact that has happened....gives me a reason to do the song). Rollie Massimino, the coach who guided Villanova to one of college basketball’s most improbable national titles, died Wednesday at the age of 82. Massimino had been battling lung cancer and reportedly had recently entered a hospice care facility near his Florida home. Even though Massimino won more than 800 games in 48 years as a college head coach, he’ll always be best known for one momentous victory in particular. Massimino’s 1985 Villanova team capped off an unfathomable run from No. 8 seeds to national champions by upsetting Patrick Ewing-led Georgetown in the title game. SC -

Sucks to post some of these. Nationwide News has learned that the one-year-old son of the former Member of Parliament for Western St Mary, the PNP’s Jolyan Silvera drowned in a pool at his home yesterday. Justin, who turned one on August 11, was found in the pool shortly before midday yesterday. Member of Parliament for Manchester North Western, Mikael Phillips, who’s also the child’s godfather, says the incident happened at Mr. Silvera’s Stony Hill home in St Andrew. SC -

I remember hearing of his demise and feeling quite saddened. Still own my Beer Hunter and Malt Whiskey Companion books, which anyone worth a fuck has on their vestibule leaning up against--and acting as supplements to--The Bible. SC (EDIT: I must say about the chosen photo, anyone wearing a tie with a picture of themselves, even if it was for promotional use, is narcissistic).

A couple of feel-shit stories for today, one from my hometown of Breaux Bridge, LA. - A 41-year-old woman who was trying to save herself and her child died on Tuesday afternoon after being swept away by floodwaters in Beaumont, Texas, police said. Her 3-year-old daughter, who survived, was found “clinging” to her mother’s body. - In Breaux Bridge, 38-year-old Francine Gotch and her 3-year-old daughter, Nevaeh Alexander, were crushed to death between the collapsing ceiling and floor in the bed where they'd been sleeping. This occurred cuz of a tornado (brief film footage of it forming on Youtube). -
Not a veteran, but WWII related. Prominent nuclear disarmament campaigner Sumiteru Taniguchi, who was delivering mail in Nagasaki when the United States dropped an atomic bomb in 1945, died on Wednesday aged 88. Taniguchi, once considered a front-runner for the Nobel Peace Prize, died of cancer at a hospital in the southwestern Japanese city, according to Nihon Hidankyo, a group that represents survivors of the atomic bombings of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. The then-postman, aged only 16 when the attack happened in the closing days of World War 2, suffered horrific burns to his back and left arm that took years to heal properly. He had been riding his bicycle some 1.8 kilometres from the epicentre of the blast. Wonder if they're going to cremate him? The postman always burns twice... SC

Sounds like many of you obtain valuable info from Twitter, which puts me at an even greater disadvantage cuz I absolutely and steadfastly refuse to sign up for that. Alas... SC
