Ach, a number of years ago I lost a good friend too. We'd meet up every Wednesday when he'd come into town for his shopping for a catch up. Soon I noticed his shopping was mainly vodka and his chat was always about the same thing and he slowly got pissed in the pub. After about a year or two of this (I'm a patient guy) he started hanging around with some obnoxious drunks who he insisted I be friends with. I told him it couldn't go on like this, he needed help and I was just tacitly consenting to his ways and therefore I was stepping out the way to let him re-adjust. Haven't heard from him since, I assume he's dead.
